To smoke in the garden at a party?

fber · 20/07/2014 18:52

I lit up at a family bbq yesterday. Outside, big garden. The hostess (an inlaw) went a bit off her head and jumped from out of her own arse to right down my throat. Very publicly. There were children there, but they were playing a good way away. I have always done this at her parties, but now she has moved to a different, bigger house (it was a housewarming) it seems the goalposts have moved quite considerably. I was angry and upset at being shouted at like a kid. It's a party, right? A boozy housewarming (her words not mine).

Am I a social pariah?

So we have traffic at the front, is it wrong to want my Dc to have access to fresh air at the back of the houses?

have you measured pollution levels at front versus back, I'd wager a bet that the back levels, away from the road, are only slightly less hazardous than those at the front, and still far less risky than tobacco smoke.

air pollution from traffic doesn't just magically stop a few meters away from the road

"...parties are for non smokers to try fags, cigars, hell even a joint..."

What a load of nonsense, SweetSummer! I have been to many, many parties, without having a cigarette/pipe/cigarillo/joint at any of them, and without feeling the tiniest temptation or scintilla of need to try any of them. And I have had fun at every single one of these parties.

blubirdy · 21/07/2014 22:12

smoke smells hideous though

compared to what ?

car exhaust fumes ?

Smartiepants79 · 21/07/2014 22:12

I haven't read all of the last 100 posts.
I loathe smoking, it stinks and it kills.
I can smell someone smoking in the car in front of me (if the windows are open obviously).
If I choose not to have it in my garden then that is my choice. I don't give a shit if its a party or not.
'parties are for having fun' -agreed but having to put up with other people's stinking fags is not my idea of fun.

ihategeorgeosborne · 21/07/2014 22:12

It was one of the main reasons I quit smoking in the end, because I couldn't stand the constant nagging and snide remarks from friends and family. They drove me nuts with their right on opinions, along with all the fake coughs you get from some as soon as you light up. However, when I go to a party, particularly a party in someone's garden, I smoke. Thankfully a lot of people I know do this to and our friends and family are fine with it. I would not go to a party if I got a hard time for smoking outside. Jeez, people need to chill out.

LoveBeingInTheSun · 21/07/2014 22:13

You should have gone inside to smoke

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/07/2014 22:15

I find the spraying around of highly perfumed aerosol body sprays smells hideous and makes me choke.
It happens at parties -even indoors Shock

Purplepoodle · 21/07/2014 22:16

Hubby leaves the garden and usually goes around the side or front of the house as he hates children seeing him smoking

blubirdy · 21/07/2014 22:17

Quite frankly, if you can't even see your way to letting someone have a puff in the garden, then you're miserable, controlling git, and I bet your parties are shite

I think that too. I have this vision of all these women with faces like cats bums having this really "fun" party that I would probably rather have a root canal treatment than attend.

slithytove · 21/07/2014 22:24

Pictish, birdy, sweet summer - are you serious?

"Please can you smoke in the front garden" and I'm miserable controlling with shite parties? Pretty nasty.

I have a small back garden, smoke makes me vomit as am pregnant, and DS was prem with lung difficulties. But I am somehow the one in the wrong?

that embarrasses me - the fact that so many non-smokers act that way. I feel like apologizing for them, lol. We have one person in our circle of friends and she gets on my tits immensely (well she gets on most peoples tits to be honest) she does that really annoying little hand wave thing when the smokers go to their designated spot. Its FAR away from us all, and she's the only one that always makes a big deal with the hand waving, and turning her nose up. We all (majority non smokers I may add) sighed a sigh of relief when she was ill for a while and we were spared her face like a cat's arse and patronising little waving hand.

If you want Expat, I've got one I will give you for free!!!! I will even throw in her cats bum mouth and her wavy wee hand gestures, lol

slithytove · 21/07/2014 22:28

I don't give a flying fuck if you think it's fashionable, and I fail to see where I have said one fucking negative about people who smoke. I didn't consider what was fashionable or not when I got pregnant and started being sick at certain smells. Or when I delivered a prem baby with breathing difficulties.

But the smell of smoke itself I can't handle in my garden, if it happened I would have to go away. How is that fair?

I'm leaving this thread now as some of you have been needlessly rude and upsetting.

Cruikshank · 21/07/2014 22:30

I wonder if all of these people talking about stinking fags and the like have smokeless barbeques? Boggling at the thought setting up contraption to merrily char-grill meat for hours on end and then getting all het up about one little fag.

Cruikshank · 21/07/2014 22:30

*thought of setting up a contraption

I have that. I can't stand cheap perfume, aerosol body sprays, body odour, people who don't wash or change clothes frequently enough. Give me a smoker above those any day.

funny though how all these people with all these highly sensitive children never seem to have issues with these smells, because to my nose, they're 10 times more potent re bad smells than outdoor smokers.

ihategeorgeosborne · 21/07/2014 22:37

I love the smell of a freshly lit cigarette, particularly a golden virginia rolly. I've followed people down the road before when I've quit just to inhale the smell. I can't stand the smell of perfume either and never wear it for that reason. I'm not keen on bad breath either but I can't tell them to go away.

blubirdy · 21/07/2014 22:39

slithytove, how do you cope walking down a public road or exiting a train station or walking past a pub? Or passing a solitary smoker anywhere?

I honestly can't smell my guests smoke and where they sit in my garden is about 5 meters from where the rest of us sit. And i thought my nose was UBERsensitive because I am ALWAYS the first to smell body odour, sweat, cheap deo sprays, cheap perfumes etc

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/07/2014 22:39

"...I find the spraying around of highly perfumed aerosol body sprays smells hideous and makes me choke. It happens at parties -even indoors..."

I have to say I have never been at a party where anyone has sprayed body spray - but as the proud owner of two teenage boys and one 20-year-old one, I am painfully aware of the penetrative properties of Lynx body spray!*. Basically, it is weaponised fragrance, and when the boys use it in their rooms, it is strong enough for me to taste several rooms away!

    • other viciously penetrative, horrible smelling body sprays are available! Grin
blubirdy · 21/07/2014 22:39

sorry, forgot to put the first sentence in bold.^^

ihategeorgeosborne · 21/07/2014 22:41

As a side note, I actually think pubs smell far worse since the smoking ban, as you can really smell the stale booze, piss, puke, etc. Cigarette smoke masked a lot of very unpleasant odours.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/07/2014 22:42

Blubirdy - of course slithytove can't avoid the smell of cigarette smoke in the street - much as I am sure she would like to. But surely it is not unreasonable for her to expect her own garden to be a no-smoking zone!
