To be shocked at what I saw at a Toby Carvery?

I went to a Toby Carvery the other day. I had two types of meat, a Yorkshire pudding, veg and gravy. I had a good sized portion, ate it all and didn't feel the need to go up again. I'm quite smug that I know how much to put on my plate without wasting it.

However, I could see the gravy/sauce table from where I was sitting and saw a few very overweight young people, late teens/early 20's with 3 - yes 3 Yorkshire puddings on their plates, a mound of veg and ladling on bucketfuls of gravy.

Surely this is not normal and they were just greedy.

OP posts:

I was going to mention the Toby Carvery snobbery too OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat

Threads like this always bring out the food snobs, like we're all supposed to be impressed.

RandallFloyd · 20/07/2014 12:41

Stuffing too?!

If that was my local I'd be a biffer again in no time!

ouryve · 20/07/2014 12:42

YWBU for going to Toby carvery.

Those vegetables are notoriously fattening, though.Hmm

gordyslovesheep · 20/07/2014 12:44

I don't have snobbery - I just don't like carveries due to not eating most of what they serve

but I do think it's daft to go to an all you can eat restaurant and be surprised people eat!

WorraLiberty · 20/07/2014 12:44

Why though ouryve and anyone else who thinks the OP was unreasonable for going to a Toby carvery?

What is unreasonable about that choice?

WoodliceCollection · 20/07/2014 12:44

Who the actual fuck feels 'smug' because they know how much food they want to eat? Don't you have any academic or social achievements, so that is the best you can do? Really? Get a grip, and possibly eating disorder therapy if food related observations mean so much to you.

WeAllHaveWings · 20/07/2014 12:46

Why on earth would you even look at other people's plates and then make a comparison with there weight? Says a lot about you and your company must have been pretty boring too!

pictish · 20/07/2014 12:49

My fil's wife would. She's obsessed with portion control, and makes a big deal of how clever she reckons she is, for knowing all about it.
She's crap to eat with as a result...she always has something to say to anyone who has a single pea over what she deems as acceptable...even her own husband.

But then...she's generally a rude, self satisfied horror that no one except fil enjoys spending time with. We tolerate her because we have to.

Very true, Toby! Those people with no food or body image issue at all tend not to even notice the size of others, or what they eat.

LoveBeingInTheSun · 20/07/2014 12:50

Goady thread

Chippednailvarnish · 20/07/2014 12:52

I'm quite smug

You don't say!

RandallFloyd · 20/07/2014 12:54

Oh, are they common?
I didn't know, that's a bit sad.
I was genuinely thinking of finding that Chester one.

Sad
ouryve · 20/07/2014 12:55

It's nothing to do with common. I just don't like carveries. I get indigestion just thinking about them.

WorraLiberty · 20/07/2014 12:56

I think people who look down on other people's choice of eating venues are common.

Or at least lacking in manners and common sense.

WorraLiberty · 20/07/2014 12:56

Oh I forgot the grin so that sounded snarky! Blush

Fairylea · 20/07/2014 12:57

What worra just said. That exactly.

Chippednailvarnish · 20/07/2014 12:57

I love the Toby carvery (shuffles off to continue being common).

And before you accuse me of being fat OP, I'm not.

WorraLiberty · 20/07/2014 12:58

I don't like Sushi but I wouldn't tell someone they were being unreasonable for choosing to eat in a Sushi restaurant.

If they expected me to eat with them, now that would be unreasonable.

Roundedbuttocks90 · 20/07/2014 12:59

3 Yorkshire puddings isn't that much YES THREE YORKSHIRE PUDDINGS shock horror!!!

You sound very judgy and 'smug'

Get over yourself

I lovvvvveeeeeeee Sushi, I'd eat my own body weight in it.

OP would find me sickening Grin

CatKisser · 20/07/2014 13:00

Sigh.

I hate posts like this. I'm overweight and know it. I know the onus is on me to change this and I've got to find a way that works for me, but in the mean time I am becoming slowly more anxious about the way I look. I already hate eating in public (look at that fat cow troughing away, etc). It really doesn't help knowing there are smuggertons like the OP eyeing up your plate and you body so that they can come onto AIBU and write about how gross you are.

Rant over.

fishdishwish · 20/07/2014 13:01

YABU unreasonable, I think. 'Tis really no business of yours what strangers pile their plates with. I'm fairly overweight (well, obese, if I'm honest), and I'd hate to think others were judging what I ate in public.

As a veggie, I'm not a big fan of Toby carveries. I went in one once as it was the only option nearby, and was offered the veggie choice of onion tart - which was basically the roasted onions off the carvery bunged into a pastry case!

I do think all-you-can-eat places encourage gluttony in all of us, though!
