To be shocked at what I saw at a Toby Carvery?

I went to a Toby Carvery the other day. I had two types of meat, a Yorkshire pudding, veg and gravy. I had a good sized portion, ate it all and didn't feel the need to go up again. I'm quite smug that I know how much to put on my plate without wasting it.

However, I could see the gravy/sauce table from where I was sitting and saw a few very overweight young people, late teens/early 20's with 3 - yes 3 Yorkshire puddings on their plates, a mound of veg and ladling on bucketfuls of gravy.

Surely this is not normal and they were just greedy.

My dad used to eat loads at these places. If I am honest I did find it greedy and a bit gluttonous: my dad wasn't overweight, though.

Randall mainly in South Wales.

Mintyy · 20/07/2014 12:18

Oh, yes, an the biggest eater in our family is also the slimmest. Man that guy can eat, but he retains a really gorgeous physique for a 48 year old. Doesn't share our dodgy gene pool though - he is an inlaw.

Worra so sad Wink

OorWullie · 20/07/2014 12:20

You think one yorkshire per person is standard?

You are missing out. They are rhe best bit of the meal!

settingsitting · 20/07/2014 12:24

Never been to one. They sound great.

RandallFloyd · 20/07/2014 12:24

Ooh, there's one in Chester!
I might pop over there, sounds like it would be worth it for the shock value alone Wink

FeministStar · 20/07/2014 12:25

Probably the same group as the one I saw who had two massively obese teenagers who were each having one of the massive desserts that are intended for sharing.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 20/07/2014 12:26

OP, you should see my ds1- 19 and his mates at the Pizza Hut all you can eat lunchtime buffet.

Your hair would stand on end.

Fact!

UnderEstherMate · 20/07/2014 12:26

One Yorkshire per person? Thank God I've never been to a Toby Carvery then! I'd feel cheated.

Oh and yes OP, YABU, but I think you know that.

Fairylea · 20/07/2014 12:29

Are you my mother??

She told me the other day she couldn't stand going out with her partner again after seeing how much food he put on his plate at a carvery. It embarrassed her THAT much. How ridiculous.

I'm overweight a bit and I'd have 4 Yorkshires. Do I give a fuck? No. Have to get my money's worth :)

SauvignonBlanche · 20/07/2014 12:30

I might see you there Randall, I'm overweight and I love Yorkshire puddings so you'll never spot me. Wink

BillnTedsMostFeministAdventure · 20/07/2014 12:31

Yorkshires are probably a bit more healthy than roast potatoes or cauli cheese.

MadonnaKebab · 20/07/2014 12:33

Gosh Pipkins
You must be so easily shocked

However must you cope with events in the news if people's menu choices disturb you so much?

pictish · 20/07/2014 12:36

I'm a bit of a chunker myself, and I would totally get my money's worth out of a carvery!
Would I give a toss about what other diners thought of my plate? Nope!

Would I be interested in what's on other people's plates? Nope!

Mind your own business OP, seriously. Next time take a book.

ICanSeeTheSun · 20/07/2014 12:36

Where else can you get 4 meat roast with Yorkshire pudding and unlimited veg for £5.99 (mon-sat) unlimited coke/lemonade for £2-£3

MrsSchadenfreude · 20/07/2014 12:36

Three Yorkshire puddings?

No-one got fat on a pile of veg and Yorkshire puddings, surely?

Lauren83 · 20/07/2014 12:37

I could eat 3 Yorkshires no probs

Yabu for going Toby Carvery

RandallFloyd · 20/07/2014 12:37

Can I stare please, Sauv?
I might sneak a photo.
'Slightly overweight gal in yorkie-eating shocker'
The Chronicle would lap that shit up Grin

(If I really can eat my body weight in cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes I'm definitely there)

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 20/07/2014 12:38

Confused at the Toby Carvery snobbery. It's only a roast dinner FFS and a lot less grim than most other chain restaurant or fast food outlets.

The Yorkshire puds are massive btw, if you had more than two, there wouldn't be room for any other food on the plate.

I must have a smaller appetite than most, because despite having my allocated meat and single Yorkshire, which I leave most of, no stuffing, one roast pot and a decent amount if veg, I am stuffed and there is no way I could contemplate a pudding.

tobysmum77 · 20/07/2014 12:38

I bet the ops actually overweight themselves. It's the sort of comment a 'slightly' ow person would make imo to justify themselves

genuine slim people care a lot less about stuff like this.

WowserBowser · 20/07/2014 12:39

Randall - my ex was obsessed with Toby's so we used visit quite a few but that was our 'local'

We would have a carvery, play the it box and drink wine to forget my pitiful existence

And the most unreasonable thing about this thread is the use of 'yorkie puds'

RandallFloyd · 20/07/2014 12:39

All this for £5.99? Shock
Actual unrestricted access to roast potatoes for less than a Burger King?
No bloody wonder people stock up!

SignYourName · 20/07/2014 12:40

YAallBU because now I reeeeeeeeaaaallly want a big pile of Yorkshire puddings and gravy and there are none to be had. Humph.
