To be shocked at what I saw at a Toby Carvery?

I went to a Toby Carvery the other day. I had two types of meat, a Yorkshire pudding, veg and gravy. I had a good sized portion, ate it all and didn't feel the need to go up again. I'm quite smug that I know how much to put on my plate without wasting it.

However, I could see the gravy/sauce table from where I was sitting and saw a few very overweight young people, late teens/early 20's with 3 - yes 3 Yorkshire puddings on their plates, a mound of veg and ladling on bucketfuls of gravy.

Surely this is not normal and they were just greedy.

There is something about those 'all you can eat' buffet type places that brings the greedy out in everyone.

I think YANBU to be shocked at peoples unashamed gluttony but YABU to get a bit judgey pants about it on here. Unfortunately it is well documented that an unhealthy diet and being overweight can lead to health problems as we age, one being Diabetes. It is all of our responsibility to eat well and be well, you are succeeding, it seems as though they are heading down a road that could give them problems later on. Concentrate on yourself and if it helps to feel smug then so be it.

isthisanacidtest · 20/07/2014 11:59

I used to be pure AFFRONTED when I took DS to an all you can eat.

He has hollow legs and would pile the plate and go back for more. And more.

And even DD has 3 yorkie puds.

YABU.

TattiePants · 20/07/2014 12:00

The Yorkshire puds at all our local Toby restaurants are in the 'serve yourself' part and you can have as many as you want. Then again, I do live in the NE - overweight capital of the UK.

SauvignonBlanche · 20/07/2014 12:00

YABU to be "shocked" by this. I agree you are quite smug.

TurboWithAKick · 20/07/2014 12:00

If you are in Yorkshire I think yp's should be unlimited

I wish I knew how much to put on my plate without wasting it, that is quite the achievement.

Nah, sorry OP, YABU and you do sound very smug. Stop focusing on your perfect plate, find something more interesting to occupy yourself, and leave everyone else to do what they want.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 20/07/2014 12:03

At least they were eating vegetables. I like Toby Carvery but notice that a lot of people just get meat stuffing yorkies roasties the tiniest bit of veg, like one pea, and gravy and sauce.

If you have meat and veg and only a tiny amount of roast pot and Yorkshire pud, it's probably the healthiest fast food available.

Numanoid · 20/07/2014 12:04

I think this must be a wind-up, come to think of it.

GreeboOgg · 20/07/2014 12:05

That's it, I'm having yorkshire puddings and gravy for lunch. I might bother with some veg, but only if it doesn't take up yorkie space on the plate.

PipkinsPal · 20/07/2014 12:05

Birdsgottafly - It was only 6pm so too early for food being left over.

Somesort I don't need anyone's praise or nastiness and I'm not superior to anyone.

My dd gets 2 big puds, she only has a tiny bit of turkey though as she's not a big meat eater. You just have to ask at ours.

I'm deliberately ignoring the actual goady point of the thread.

I've never been in a Toby Carvery, but I've always thought that the whole point of these 'all-you-can-eat' places was that you could take as much as you wanted and then pay return visits to the serving area.

Is that not the case?

And, if I am correct, why are the Yorkshire Puddings rationed? Is it in fact an 'all-you-can-eat-except-Yorkshire-Puddings-of-which-you-just-get-one' place?

ICanSeeTheSun · 20/07/2014 12:11

I love a Toby cavery especially when DH is on afternoon, pick the DC up from school walk the 5 minutes to get there ( yes DC school is right by Toby cavery) I eat as much as I can normally 2 Yorkshire.

I even have pudding/dessert

RandallFloyd · 20/07/2014 12:12

Good god.
People getting as much as they can for their money.
Overweight people eating out, in public.

Shocking times indeed.

I've never been to a Toby carvery. I don't think we have them in Wales.
I don't like carveries myself but you take me to an all you can eat Chinese buffet and you'll see something truly special.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 20/07/2014 12:13

If they didn't have meat on their plates perhaps they're doing their bit to save the planet, you know, less meat consumption and all that Wink

With that in mind, I applaud them.

PetulaGordino · 20/07/2014 12:13

I try to avoid eating in carveries after working in one as a student

gamerchick · 20/07/2014 12:14

1 Yorkshire pudding, you're having a laugh. They're the best bit of a roast Grin

WorraLiberty · 20/07/2014 12:14

StillStayingClassySanDiego but 3 Yorkshire Terriers died to make the puddings Sad

SoonToBeSix · 20/07/2014 12:14

Op two is the max number if Yorkshireman allowed , I think you are exaggerating. And as for the mound of veg yes how fattening and unhealthy!

dawndonnaagain · 20/07/2014 12:15

Pipkins. I am overweight, it's actually due to medication, not that I need to justify it to you. However, you are curtailing my social life, it's judgemental madams like you that prevent poor sods like me going out for a meal. If I'm out for the day, I grab a sandwich and eat it in my car so as not to offend those that think that there is nothing more disgusting than a fat person eating.
Thank you for your kindness, I really appreciate being reminded of how abominably disgusting I am, even when I'm in my own home.

Mintyy · 20/07/2014 12:16

I'm quite smug that I have never been to a Toby Carvery Smile.

gamerchick · 20/07/2014 12:17

Don't go to my local taybarn OP. I've seen people have piled after piled plates and still go for more during the time it take me to eat one plate. It's one of the most fascinating things I've had to force my eyes away from.
