to hate line drying my washing

PopcornFrenzy · 17/07/2014 08:30

my mother was here yesterday and my washing had just finished so I popped it all in my tumble.

She said I was being silly and not using the lovely weather, she used to line dry everything when I was a child.

I replied I do 1 load of washing a week and she can mind her own business.

I hate the feeling of line dryed towels and clothes next to my skin am I weird??

I would love to do one load a week. There is only DH and me and I manage to get through all of this:

  • Towels and tea towels
  • Sheets
  • Dark clothes
  • Bright colours
  • Light colours
  • Whites
  • Delicates or gym clothes
That's 7 loads at least per week. I wash them in different cycles and with different products so I can't just lump them all together. I tumble dry them to about 75% dry and then hang them on a clothes horse. Worst part for me is folding and putting away! Having a baby in October so I am guessing I'll be doing at least 10 loads per week after that Confused Sad

Obviously your choice not to. As someone who lives in a flat with no outside space and no tumble dryer, I am jealous of all those who can dry clothes outside. Hoping to move soon and really hope we can get somewhere where I can hang washing up outside. (Being optimistic about rainy days etc)

chemenger · 17/07/2014 12:49

I prefer line drying but usually weather works against me. Tumble drying is the last resort for me because so many things can't be tumble dried and it is so hard on things - all that fluff in the filter started out as part of the cloth. I use an airer and a dehumidifier, reasonably quick, gentle on the clothes. My pet hate is wet clothes on radiators, how to make your house cold and damp in one easy lesson. I much prefer hard towels so line dried ones, crispy and smelling of the outside are perfect for me. Nothing beats the smell of bedding dried outside rather than artificial chemical perfumes.

I live somewhere that is too hot to dry clothes outside (not UK), as all the insects come to suck the liquid out of the washing when it's on the line. Clothes dry almost instantly, but solid.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 17/07/2014 13:07

Line drying make my hayfever really bad. Getting in to bed and having an allergic reaction to pollen on my sheets is not fun.

Vivacia · 17/07/2014 13:09

How do people dry their laundry there Down?

TheRealAmandaClarke · 17/07/2014 13:23

Good grief down

I love the smell of line dried laundry.
But it's a faff. Takes sooo long to shake, peg out, take down....
I do at least one load a day.

bookcave · 17/07/2014 13:37

I've given up line drying entirely - it's made a huge difference to my hayfever/allergies. Small rack in spare room for the things that can't be tumbled but most things can be tumbled on a low setting.

ghostmous3 · 17/07/2014 14:16

I love line dried stuff. I have 3 long lines spread the length of the garden and can put 3 huge loads on them as we have an 8kg washing machine. On a hot day its dry within a few hours so i can put more out. There are six of us and dd3 is a bed wetter too.

i love the sight of towels and sheets flapping in the breeze, makes me feel contented

Nannyplumismymum · 17/07/2014 14:20

Popcorn I never line dry my clothes.
Even in summer.
I was advised not to by doctor and pharmacist because of my DS's hay fever.
I was told that line drying clothes and bed linen is the worst thing ever for hay fever.

DialsMavis · 17/07/2014 14:28

Pegging washing is the only pleasurable household activity! I feel a tremendous sense of well being if I get a load or 2 out before work. I can't be bothered with getting it in, I leave that for DS or DP

goodasitgets · 17/07/2014 14:35

Not allowed a line outside here Sad and no room for a tumble dryer! I have a heated airer and a normal airer which things dry pretty quick on. Very much wish I could dry outside though

I even line dry pirates' washing...

to hate line drying my washing
StanleyLambchop · 17/07/2014 14:43

I don't think I could bear to put the dryer on today, it is hot enough in the kitchen already. I use it more in the winter though, and justify the cost as it makes the kitchen really cosy & Warm! Love my line though, agree with others it is very satisfying to line dry. Once put washing out when there was snow on the ground- it was a freezing but sunny day. It dried just fine!!

Downamongtherednecks · 17/07/2014 14:46

It's the US, so everyone uses tumble driers. There are even local laws stopping you putting washing outside as it makes the place look "trashy". (I did wash a kingsize feather duvet and spread it out on the grass to dry - it dried in about 20 minutes, but I had to stand there scaring off the insects so they didn't mark it - welcome to the South Smile )

Orangeanddemons · 17/07/2014 14:59

Please be aware tumble dryer fans that they can catch fire. This happened to me 5 weeks ago, and the whole house was a write off. We were in the house when it happened. 5000 fires a year caused by tumblers.

I will never ever have one again. I'm a line during fan too

FloozeyLoozey · 17/07/2014 15:07

I don't quite know how anyone manages to line dry in the UK with our awful weather. Even in summer it is so damp and wet. Someone share their secrets!

twinjocks · 17/07/2014 15:10

I too love line drying. Can't do it in the wet winters here (Ireland - rain!), but try to use the line exclusively from April through till about October. I love weather like this when I can get a whole week's washing done and dried in about a day and a half. Love the sight of the washing flapping in the breeze and love the smell - worth putting up with the crunchy towels!!

DramaAlpaca · 17/07/2014 15:11

I love the smell of line dried clothes, and like my towels crunchy.

I hardly ever use the tumble drier.

KEGirlOnFire · 17/07/2014 15:22

Nope, YANBU. Line-dried clothes just smell of, well, material. Tumbled clothes smell of the scrummy washing powder and softener that you use. Also, the towels that have been line-dried are hard and crunchy... Yuck!!

HOWEVER, I envy all these people who talk about taking their clothes and the tumble and DON'T have to iron them. I don't get that at all. Even if I take the clothes straight out when the dryer has finished, my clothes all still need ironing because they're really creased...

Anyway, totally going off-topic - as you were...

PolyesterBride · 17/07/2014 15:23

People who tumble dry everything - ok it's your money but it's still a huge waste of energy (unless you have solar panels or whatever). Seems a bit 'I'm all right jack' to me. But I drive everywhere when I could get the bus, put the heating on when I could wear another jumper, buy airfreighted fruit and veg when I could buy local farm food...it is easy to judge but you can't just pick on tumble drying.

littlewhitebag · 17/07/2014 15:46

Floozey I have no idea what you are on about. I live in Scotland - not known for having the best weather. But recently it has been glorious almost every day. Today i have had three loads out, dried and in.

I look at the forecast and do my washing on days that it is to be dry and sunny. It's not difficult.

IrianofWay · 17/07/2014 15:49

We dumped our tumbler when we moved house. Too expensive to run IMO. It had started out being for emergencies only but too tempting to use it all the time.
