to hate line drying my washing

PopcornFrenzy · 17/07/2014 08:30

my mother was here yesterday and my washing had just finished so I popped it all in my tumble.

She said I was being silly and not using the lovely weather, she used to line dry everything when I was a child.

I replied I do 1 load of washing a week and she can mind her own business.

I hate the feeling of line dryed towels and clothes next to my skin am I weird??

OP posts:
HesterShaw · 17/07/2014 11:04

Yes you are weird!

Why ON EARTH would you waste money on tumble drying in this weather? Drying yourself takes seconds. It can't be that onerous.

Thurlow · 17/07/2014 11:06

I can't figure out the one load a day

You'd love us - two adults and a toddler, and maybe 10 washes a month? Grin

What about damp clothes like swimming gear or what you were wearing when you got caught in the rain? What [about] dog-walking clothes and school/work clothes

No dogs, no swimming, no gym kit, work dresses can be worn twice... And I can't remember the last time I was caught in the rain!?

I get that if you have several children who all do sports you have lots of washing. But smaller family/younger kids - no need to do half as much washing.

Vivacia · 17/07/2014 11:12

You've mid-quoted me there, which is a bit naughty, and you haven't addressed my point about towels, bedding and tea towels.

10 washes per month is more than two a week, so more than double the OP.

How's that mid-quoting? Confused

10 washes includes towels, bedding and tea towels. Not just clothes.

DoJo · 17/07/2014 11:26

If you check one of the other threads on here, you will discover that washing towels and bedding is not necessarily a weekly job!

DoJo · 17/07/2014 11:27

Also, Vivacia, I suspect that you mis-quoted yourself as your earlier post at 10.46 says 'I can't figure out one load a day' which I believe is what Thurlow was referring to.

RhiWrites · 17/07/2014 11:28

I don't have a tumble dryer. Mine broke and I said when the washing machine broke too I'd get a combi unit. That was three years ago.

I always feel accomplished when I line dry though. I feel very eco.

But in the winter we dry on racks and then I wish the washing machine would hurry up and break!

murphys · 17/07/2014 11:31

Well I have proof of how much washing I do..... when the Miele man came to repair something on my machine, he logged the hours it has done. It works out that we use our machine for 12 hours a week Shock.

Openup41 · 17/07/2014 11:36

One load a week!

I do two loads a day at least 6 days a week. I feel my day consists of hanging out and packing away.

ithoughtofitfirst · 17/07/2014 11:40

I do one load a day. I'm not proud of this. I wish I knew how to to cut it down. I have a baby on the way too.

Openup41 · 17/07/2014 11:42

I am sure many people tumble dry. Two of my neighbours never hang washing out. Both are at home, one recently retired, the other a sahm.

murphys · 17/07/2014 11:50

The thing with dryers is that they do shrink clothes. There are many things that cant go in dryers. Do you dry these things outside or on an airer? (those of you whole exclusively tumble dry)

bigkidsdidit · 17/07/2014 11:52

Tumble drying is so bad for clothes, though. All faded and shrunk. I tumbled my jeans once a week for a year then the next year bought exactly the same pair. They were noticeably longer and wider. I thought I'd got fat!

7Days · 17/07/2014 11:57

I really love pegging out a 'representative' line of washing

Tiny DS's babygro's, size newborn, DD's Peppa themed wardrobe, DS1's school jumper, DH's favourite 90's band tshirt.....seeing them all colourfully flapping....... I admit I am a saddo though so please don't feel the need to mock Grin

littlewhitebag · 17/07/2014 12:00

I love line dried clothes. They smell amazing. However I always tumble my towels as I don't like the feel of baked towel.

I do loads of washing. A family of four adults wearing work clothes, casual clothes, muddy dog walking clothes, gym clothes. It all mounts up.

Thankfully I love doing washing and hanging it out.

JohnCusacksWife · 17/07/2014 12:02

You can't beat line dried clothes - they're so fresh. And I get some sort of weird sense of wellbeing when I see my washing blowing away on the whirly.

I also love my pulley where I dry clothes in the winter or on rainy days. It's my all time favourite "gadget". Don't understand why everyone who has the space doesn't have one.

I'd say our tumble drier gets used a couple of times a month max.

murphys · 17/07/2014 12:04

About a week after ds was born I got a card and a little gift from my elderly neighbour. When she popped around she said that she didn't actually know I had had the baby yet as we were very quiet, but she saw all the little blue baby clothes hanging on the line, this is how she knew Grin.

passmethewineplease · 17/07/2014 12:10

I don't really line dry, I find when I do my hay fever gets worse, no amount of shaking the clothes works.

I also don't like the flies on the washing or any other creepey crawly things that always tend to be on them.

TheScottishPlay · 17/07/2014 12:12

That's sweet Murpys.
I love line drying too. It was raining here yesterday. I was a bit disappointed not to get washing out. I'm making up for it today.

ComeHeather · 17/07/2014 12:21

Family of 5.
3 quick loads a day at 30 degrees/25 min wash.
Everything line dried.

I figure that the sun/breeze is part of the cleaning process and justifies my short/low temp washes.

Live in south east Uk and it's been warm enough for line drying every day since Easter here, so it's not tricky at all....peg out last thing at night to catch early morning sun. All dry by about 11am.

Viviennemary · 17/07/2014 12:26

I don't like drying outside either. Trek down to the bottom of the garden. Then have to watch all day in case it rains. Then have to remember to take it in again at night. But I do sometimes.

ouryve · 17/07/2014 12:30

YANBU. I've been part drying heavy stuff on an airer, but still finishing it in the dryer so it doesn't end up rough and doesn't need ironing (a task I find as painful as it is satisfying). I don't put anything out in June, when the grass pollen is at its worst, as we all have hayfever.

ASmidgeofMidge · 17/07/2014 12:38

I'm a fan of the line-drying thing - stuff seems cleaner, somehow, if it's been outside in the sun/breeze. Plus you can use the sunshine to bleach whites/stubborn stains. Only downside is the numbers of spiders coming in on the washing ...

KnockMeDown · 17/07/2014 12:39

I do love line-drying, but as I work during the week, only really get to do it at the weekend. It's the best thing for bedding. Other clothes I tend to hang on an airer, and rarely need to iron those.

But I find my tumble drier invaluable for all the smalls - pants socks, little leggings (4yo DD). Also, towels do come up best in the tumble drier, though to save costs a little, I tend to let them finish off in the airing cupboard.

I think I'm probably like most people, and do what needs done at the time!
