to hate line drying my washing

PopcornFrenzy · 17/07/2014 08:30

my mother was here yesterday and my washing had just finished so I popped it all in my tumble.

She said I was being silly and not using the lovely weather, she used to line dry everything when I was a child.

I replied I do 1 load of washing a week and she can mind her own business.

I hate the feeling of line dryed towels and clothes next to my skin am I weird??

I have loads of set washes, towels, White's, black (school stuff), pinks, jeans, bedding, other colours, bedding( all seperate so 4 loads from 4 beds once a week) school jackets freshened over weekend, dds trainers x3 freshed weekly.

I think I'm quite addicted to washing dh goes mad as I wash individual items on a wash all the time.

merrymouse · 17/07/2014 09:34

4-5 loads a day is excessive.

Leaving aside any other considerations I can't imagine putting away 4-5 loads a day.

numptieseverywhere · 17/07/2014 09:38

I hate line drying. I love my dryer.

murphys · 17/07/2014 09:44

Merry if you use vinegar instead of fabric softener in the rinse, its supposed to keep towels fluffier.

OorWullie · 17/07/2014 09:44

Just me and my 4yo here too, I do maybe 3 loads a week- one for towels, one for dark clothes and one for lights. I don't have a tumble drier and I like my washing out on the line- unfortunately it's all on the clothes horse now because my neighbour helpfully cut my washing line.

HappyAgainOneDay · 17/07/2014 09:47

StayWithMe If you don't like line drying, get your husband to do it.

Whatisaweekend · 17/07/2014 09:52

I think you are being both U and not U. I begrudge spending the money & energy that the tumble takes but then I have unhappy memories of my mum drying our laundry in a conservatory type place. It was so quick the towels went crispy and it was possible to make them stand up on their own!! Gah!! So I think line dry everything except perhaps sneaking some towels into the tumble....

TarkaTheOtter · 17/07/2014 09:54

The Americans that I know don't line dry to avoid sun bleaching their clothes.

Gruntfuttock · 17/07/2014 09:57

Claybury " In fact I've gone a step further today. Hung out towels in the hot sun INSTEAD of washing them. Feeling v green."

YUK. I feel a bit green after reading that too, but it's not envy

Almostfifty · 17/07/2014 09:57

I love line-dried clothing and bedding. I also love hanging it out, making sure it's hung properly for optimum drying (shirts hung so the wind goes through the sleeves) and least amount of ironing.

kinkyfuckery · 17/07/2014 10:04

I love drying on the line. At this time of year I am often flitting around the house looking for something to wash and hang out, when I've an empty basket Blush

CoffeeTea103 · 17/07/2014 10:06

I've just dried outside this morningSmile love taking advantage of this weather.

MrsWinnibago · 17/07/2014 10:12

I was like you OP....but I've recently moved house and am on an electricity meter now...I could not BELIEVE how much power the dryer was using so I began using the line.

And it dries things beautifully unlike my old line...I think my old garden had no breeze or something...this one is in the full sun and has breeze all day. It's FAB and free too.

7Days · 17/07/2014 10:14

I love line drying

I even love leaving them out to get rained on and then dried again, smells so lovely

ParsingFlatly · 17/07/2014 10:33

If Claybury's hanging towels out to dry rather than washing them after one use, that's good, surely?

PetulaGordino · 17/07/2014 10:37

i like my towels like cardboard

WatchingSeaMonkeys · 17/07/2014 10:44

I love line drying, the clothes smell a lot nicer & fresher when you get them in & it seems to be better for them than tumbling.

The only downside is that sometimes a bloody bird will crap on something....

specialsubject · 17/07/2014 10:45

your electricity bill, although it is our planet.

I love a fresh towel from the washing line, smells lovely.

Some people here give the impression that they live in places which only get an hour of daylight. Except there are no such places.

Vivacia · 17/07/2014 10:46

I can't figure out the one load a day. What about towels, bedding and tea towels? What about damp clothes like swimming gear or what you were wearing when you got caught in the rain?

What with dog-walking clothes and school/work clothes I understand wearing a "house outfit" for three days in a row, but the same jumper for 7 evenings?

Vivacia · 17/07/2014 10:48

YANBU for not liking something such as clothes on a line (what is it exactly that you don't like?) but I think YABU for spending money and energy on the tumble drier if it can so easily be avoided.

I don't understand how some people are justifying the environmental impact. "I like the smell, so I don't give a stuff"?

PetulaGordino · 17/07/2014 10:48

well there are places with only one hour of daylight at certain points of the year, but not many people on MN live in those places

merrymouse · 17/07/2014 10:51

I think they recommend that you rinse rather than wash swim wear so that it lasts longer - certainly tumble drying will reduce a swim suit's life.

Plenty of things can be dried and aired without needing a wash.

You can also spot clean clothes.

The arrival of washing machines in people's houses is pretty recent.

7Days · 17/07/2014 10:56

there are plenty of places that only get an hour of dryness

Vivacia · 17/07/2014 11:00

I understand using heat indoors to dry clothes. I don't understand choosing to do that when there's an environmentally-friendly, culturally acceptable alternative.

grocklebox · 17/07/2014 11:00

I line dried 3 9 kilo loads yesterday. You're mad to use a tumble dryer.

And 1 load a week for an adult and a small boy? Hmm That child obviously doesn't have much outdoor fun!
