to hate line drying my washing

PopcornFrenzy · 17/07/2014 08:30

my mother was here yesterday and my washing had just finished so I popped it all in my tumble.

She said I was being silly and not using the lovely weather, she used to line dry everything when I was a child.

I replied I do 1 load of washing a week and she can mind her own business.

I hate the feeling of line dryed towels and clothes next to my skin am I weird??

I'm still trying to get past the concept of wearing the same "indoor clothes" for several days and of how, despite (presumably) having towels, bath mats, tea towels and 2 lots of bedlinen to wash, the OP only has one machine load a week. Confused

I tumble dry almost everything. I do a load in the morning before work 3 or 4 days a week, a couple at night when I get home and for at least one of the other days the machine will be going non-stop.

I don't have time or patience to put clothes on the line, wait for them to dry while the next load hangs around the kitchen soggily and then find it's rained so I'm back to square one.

I can't see what's so special about the "fresh" smell of line dried clothes. IME they smell of nothing.

Occasionally I get the feeling that some people are tripping over themselves more anxious to show off their eco credentials than to address the need to do washing in a practical and timely fashion. Not all, but definitely some.

Beautifullymixed · 19/07/2014 19:00

Has no one noticed that the op said she washes her towels and bedding every few weeks!

The towels alone must honk or is that only my towels???

aquashiv · 19/07/2014 19:23

Watching my energy monitor is enough for me to opt for the line.
I do like the idea of clothes dried by the sun.

hoobypickypicky · 19/07/2014 19:50

I did, Beautifullymixed, but I thought it must be a typo.

Beautifullymixed · 19/07/2014 20:24

I hope it was a typo hooby.

Or imo OP is a minger.
trying to ignore wearing the same clothes all week in this weather too

ParsingFlatly · 19/07/2014 20:32

With towels it makes a HUGE difference if they dry between uses.

If they sit around damp, they'll be hideous in a day or two. Dried on a heated towel rail or sunny washing line and they'll easily go over a week, unless you're still a bit grubby when you use them.

paintedfences · 19/07/2014 20:40

Word, ParsingFlatly.

I think your nose is the best way to tell when towels need washing - smell fresh = grand, smell at all off = in the wash.

threepiecesuite · 19/07/2014 21:04

Still struggling with the OP. I have a 4yo, she comes home from nursery most days with lunch on her front. Today she has grass stains on her leggings and felt pen on her top. I have to wash her clothes every day. Inc nightwear as it's so sweaty at night.
I do a load every 3 days and towels once a week. Love line - drying, one of life's small pleasures.

PopcornFrenzy · 19/07/2014 21:13

Yep towels gwt washed when they smell a bit iffy, I have a heated towel rail and believe me I'm not a minger.

DS doesn't go to nursery every day and wears the same clothes for more than one day, in fact he tends to strip a lot when he is at home so 9 times out of ten he wears shorts or just his pants.

I dry washing on the line or on a rack because I don't like wasting energy and spending needlessly on electricity. Oh sorry, clearly I am trippting over myself and anxious to show off my eco credentials Hmm. You can't say ANYTHING about the environment on MN without someone accusing you of being smug. Jesus!

hoobypickypicky · 19/07/2014 21:20

I said some people, HesterShaw, not all. You're making it clear you're not one of them but are taking it personally all the same. Sorry. Flowers

If it helps, feel free to call me a lazy cow for using my drier so often. Guilty as charged, Ma'am. Grin

HesterShaw · 19/07/2014 21:22

I wouldn't be so rude

Sorry if I sounded chippy. I often am for no particular reason. Must be all that onerous line drying.

slightlyconfused85 · 19/07/2014 21:30

Yabu. If its a nice day its much more environmentally friendly to dry your clothes outside.

Ilovenicesoap · 19/07/2014 21:52

Maybe it is more environmentally friendly slightly but I have severe back problems - I cant lift so putting my washing in the dryer one item at a time is all I can manage.
I cant carry laundry out in a basket, hang it and then bring it in.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 19/07/2014 22:03

Something needs to be done about the unreliability of the British weather tbh.
This morning I would have hung a lovely load out to dry but no. Forecast was lots of rain so I didn't bother.
Did it rain? Did it heck. Wasted opportunity. Angry

Beautifullymixed · 19/07/2014 23:13

You need a lakeland heated airer. Would have been dry in hours. Then tomorrow you could've washed and dried another couple of loads.
All for pence.

I love mine so much can you tell

waterducksback · 19/07/2014 23:33

Line drying is good, then finish off in tumble dryer for 5 mins to air them off.

slightlyconfused85 · 20/07/2014 07:10

Ilove that is obviously different as your personal circumstances dictate it. But everyone who is able hang their washing on the line where possible should do because tumble drivers use a phenomenal amount of energy.

slightlyconfused85 · 20/07/2014 07:15

I find hoobys post the most ridiculous on here. Why at this time of year does every load have to be tumble dried simply because you can't be bothered to hang out washing. Considering environmental factors in this day and age is nothing to do with eco credentials

FunkyBoldRibena · 20/07/2014 07:49

It is probably only your towels.

If you dry towels straight after washing then they really don't stink. If you bundle them up and put them in the washing basket, then they will stink.

I can never get over this way of thinking, 'I have a towel, I use it and it gets damp. In order to get rid of the damp, I soak it for an hour and then try to dry it out completely.'

Erm, just hang it up to dry as soon as you have finished with it, and it will dry naturally and it certainly won't smell.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 20/07/2014 08:20

Being tidy makes a huge difference to your laundry load.
Ds and dh drops his clothes all of the place. If I get there fast, stuff is hung up and folded and can be worn again (often, not always) left on the floor after an hour they're immediately laundry fodder.

Very little rain on today's radar...www.raintoday.co.uk/

kitesfoorever · 20/07/2014 08:30

Yabu. I have never owned a tumble dryer and have neither the space nor money to throw away buying one. Therefore all our clothes are line dried in summer and radiator/airing rack dried in winter. I do my washing on days not forecast to rain and it's never been an issue, probably do three loads per week.

I can't understand why anyone would throw away money tumble drying when they could dry naturally on the line, but each to their own.

Bouttimeforwine · 20/07/2014 09:19

I resisted getting a tumble dryer for years and managed without one for first child. Had to get one as had no space to put the aired with the with second child.

It revolutionised my life. I now hate crunchy towels and got rid of my line outside. My electricity bill is enormous Blush
