to hate line drying my washing

PopcornFrenzy · 17/07/2014 08:30

my mother was here yesterday and my washing had just finished so I popped it all in my tumble.

She said I was being silly and not using the lovely weather, she used to line dry everything when I was a child.

I replied I do 1 load of washing a week and she can mind her own business.

I hate the feeling of line dryed towels and clothes next to my skin am I weird??

We are currently living in a 3rd floor flat with no outside space, 2 young children. I would kill to be able to hang my washing outside, it smells so lovely and doesn't take over our lounge

KeithTheCat · 17/07/2014 09:04

but, but... what about bedding and towels? all in the one load?!

spence24 · 17/07/2014 09:04

My OH would tumble all our washing if I let him get away with it - he pays the bill so it shouldn't bother me so much but it does! I line dry it all if I can - if it's a sunny day in November I'll put washing out early and give it all day to dry! I think it comes from about 5 years ago when I had a lodger, who tumbled everything, and then refused to pay extra when the astronomical electric bill came in that he had generated. I got rid of the tumble dryer while he was at work one day - he never said a word, probably out of fear.

gordyslovesheep · 17/07/2014 09:08

I'm amazed you do one load a week - do you not have bedding and towels?

YANBU about line drying - I don't do it often because I hate ironing and tumble drying cuts a lot of that out

I do a wash every day though - just me and 3 kids

BookieTubules · 17/07/2014 09:08

I can't imagine hating line drying stuff (paucity of imagination here, clearly, but still.) It's free! It smells nice! It even looks nice flapping in the wind!

Claybury · 17/07/2014 09:08

Ironing is also a waste of resources. Electricity and time !

I used to live in the US and nobody hung out washing even though the weather was hot year round. Someone even asked me if it wouldn't get 'dirty' because of pollution. Plus it was simply not permitted in some neighbourhoods ( unsightly). But then the Americans are not really known for their Eco awareness ....

I can only conclude that the OP only has one colour of everything and a 20kg capacity machine.

YABU - line dried clothes smell lovely.

Claybury - I'm an expert ironing avoider. I spent quite lot of time straightening clothes out before they go on the line. The Americans must love a HUGE leccy bill.

PopcornFrenzy · 17/07/2014 09:13

house clothes are trackies and a top, I have a large capacity washing and tumble, I have a couple of sets of bedding and wash every few weeks, towels the same.

I don't iron either, waste of my time and energy I have a feeling I'm coming across as very lazy

YANBU

line dried stuff stinks, takes all the lovely smell of comfort away. I need heat on my stuff to dry and smell lovely. Family of 5 around 4/5 loads a day my gas is expensive but worth it.

line dried stuff also runs the risk of spider's beeing on it Shock

FunkyBoldRibena · 17/07/2014 09:15

I chuck all my colours in together - if I am doing sheets etc and do a hot wash, then all the whites go in together and the darks are done a few days later.

I couldn't stand the smell of comfort/lenor. Yuk yuk yuk.

canyou · 17/07/2014 09:15

I line dry 90% of things but Blush I bag all bed linen and towels for the laundry once a week and get them back folded and all matching sets folded into a pillow case with a sheet. I never have to look for matchong sets or sheets. So worth the â?¬12 a week. Grin It is my treat until he gives up smoking DP can put up with the cost

Claybury · 17/07/2014 09:15

In fact I've gone a step further today. Hung out towels in the hot sun INSTEAD of washing them. Feeling v green. Won't extend this method to DS post festival kit though.

CarmineRose1978 · 17/07/2014 09:16

Towels do feel pretty crunchy when you dry them outside, it's true. We had a drier at home, and they felt a lot softer and nicer. But the crispy ones are good for exfoliating! Sheets small lovely when they're been dried outside so I prefer that.

wheresthelight · 17/07/2014 09:16

I hate line drying but needs must! I refuse to line dry bedding or towels though so they get tumbled every time

Yanbu - your life do as you please?

FunkyBoldRibena · 17/07/2014 09:16

I think it must be the fabric softener that makes towels crispy and smelly after one use...I never use the stuff and never have crispy or smelly towels. Use vinegar if anything and that's only if I remember that I have some.

FatherDickByrne · 17/07/2014 09:17

Hanging out the washing is my favourite chore. You can have fun working out the most efficient use of space & pegs while listening to the birds singing. Heaven.

SauvignonBlanche · 17/07/2014 09:20

I too love the smell of line dried clothes and am a big fan of crunchy towels.

FudgeyCookie · 17/07/2014 09:22

I hate line dried stuff too. I hate that it takes all day to dry one load when I could get 3 or 4 loads done in a day in the tumble! Dp hates line drying to, plus we only have a small garden so dont want it taking up the space!

StupidFlanders · 17/07/2014 09:23

I think I might win this. I haven't line dried in years and we're a family of six and do at least one load a day.

I don't feel like the clothes are clean if I can't smell the detergent and the dryer locks the smell in!

I also wash and dry at odd times.

I will now add that we have solar panels and our electricity bill is tiny!

readrunraverelax · 17/07/2014 09:23

canyou that sounds divine! Laundry for your sheets. Wow, bet your linen cupboard looks so perfect. The tidy person in me whom is also addicted to fresh smelling sheets is getting excited about that.

I am a line dry person all the way. I have less crinkles and wrinkles in it when I line dry it. I find that you have to get the time exactly right on the tumble dryer to get it to fold straight and look like it has been ironed already. Who has tips for me there, pls?

Also, line drying is free. It makes it smell like heaven. I also get a strange housewife, nice feeling when it is all out and drying away. Same feeling as when the 2 DS eat really well.

HaveYouTriedARewardChart · 17/07/2014 09:24

4/5 loads a day dum? Shock

OP if your tumble dryer is only on once a week I probably can't complain about environmental issues as I'm sure we use more electricity.

But - hanging clothes out on the line is one of life's pleasures! (Except when dp has taken the pegs down and hidden them somewhere but that's a different discussion)

We got rid if our dryer and I don't miss it at all.

weeredcar · 17/07/2014 09:28

I never get up early enough at a weekend to put mine out and so it never gets dry.

Yes, I could hang a load out before I go to work but again I CBA and if I did that, it would most likely rain.....

We've just bought a tumble dryer and what I'm tending to do at the moment is hang stuff up over the clothes horses and then when they're almost dry (80%) bung them in the tumble to finish off.

merrymouse · 17/07/2014 09:29

I agree about towels - haven't worked out how to fluff them up without the aid of a tumble dryer.

However you don't need to dry the towel in the dryer - just fluff it

On the other hand I think tumble dryers seem to damage/shrink/decolour some clothing and sheets are definitely better line dried.

I would have thought 'house clothes' reduce the need for washing, assuming you aren't washing them after every wear.

I haven't found that tumble drying makes it more or less necessary to iron than line drying - most things don't need ironing and if they do (e.g. a work shirt) you need to iron it whatever drying method you use and irons are pretty efficient at ironing these days.

Notso · 17/07/2014 09:30

I have had to start line drying more as our electricity bill was ridiculous last quarter.
I love seeing all the washing on the line, it does please me. I do give jeans and towels a quick tumble because no one seems to like them crunchy.
Our clothes smell nicer than they do when tumbled, although my hay fever is worse.

I am Envy at one load of washing. There is 6 of us, including two grubby toddlers and a teen with a germ problem who shoves everything in the wash clean or dirty. To keep on top of it I need to do two loads a day minimum.
