Why can't our neighbours go to the back of their garden to smoke?

shadypines · 16/07/2014 16:41

They have a large garden and could easily walk away from the house to light up so that the smoke doesn't all blow into our windows. It's horrible and in this sweltering weather it means we either boil in 'fresh' air or have some cooler smoky air. Great. Just great.

I'm vehemently anti-smoking myself but I'm sitting here shock that a poster called the police over this issue. hmm Charming of the police to assist but totally and utterly not their role

yes I was that desperate, mrs I asked them to move away from the windows into the long gardens and they refused I had to leave my own home with a sick - baby who had a nasty temperature...just to get some air...and breeze...

The police dont do what we command you know! They felt it was necessary to come and support me based on the information given.

People not working standing by windows to all air ports, loads of them....was vile human behaviour.

ikeaismylocal · 16/07/2014 21:18

They do care, I have heard them arguing about it, the woman wants the man to ask us about the balcony junk and they both get annoyed about the bird poo. I don't care what they think of me, I don't value their opinion so why would I care?

My dp didn't ask them not to smoke because I was pregnant, it just coincided with me being pregnant, I wasn't too bothered about the health implications of second hand smoke when it was just me and dp but I am not willing to expose my dc to second hand smoke. The man aactually stopped smoking on the balcony for that summer.

I may start going out and hysterically shouting everytime he smokes, I think that will put him off, people don't like to talk to each other here never mind have any sort of argument.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 16/07/2014 21:19

This is the most hilarious anti-smoking thread we've had for days Smile

Surely everybody knows by now that the correct way to deal with smokers is simply to Shoot Them - having made sure to first tell them how stupid, smelly and selfish they are because of course they 'simply don't realise' Wink.

LST · 16/07/2014 21:19

When everyone starts smoking ecigs instead people will find a problem. People can never win.

GobbolinoCat · 16/07/2014 21:19

we are in terraced housing, maybe you have not seen terraced houses? windows are a few centimetres apart.

GobbolinoCat · 16/07/2014 21:21

I wasn't too bothered about the health implications of second hand smoke when it was just me and dp but I am not willing to expose my dc to second hand smoke same here one of my DC has awful hacking cough....

what about a high pitched whistle?

Bragadocia · 16/07/2014 21:22

You really need to just ask them, but politely and nicely.

Of course they have a right to smoke wherever they like in their garden etc etc, but generally, we all try to get along with each, don't we? If my smoking had caused discomfort to a neighbour, I would change my behaviour to improve things. It's just normal isn't it, to be nice by default? Unless they are arseholes, in which case, they won't care tuppence.

Maybe a trellis thing to block the smoke a bit? Bamboo or something as a screen? It wouldn't help the upstairs windows though.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 16/07/2014 21:25

Are you not at all worried about your DC being around all that bird shit, ikea?

ikeaismylocal · 16/07/2014 21:26

You sound quite unhinged. Sounds like you need to get out the house more rather than sit around thinking up petty things to annoy you neighbours.

We go out all the time, we are out and about from around 8 until 4/5ish but there is still the mornings and evenings which are very light and at the moment very hot. The things I do are things that would require effort not to do, to keep ds quiet would be harder than to let him run around shouting, to take the junk to the tip would require an afternoon and the cost of hiring a trailer. Why should I put myself out to make someone's life nicer when they don't feel the need to make our life nicer/easier?

I do hope I feel less angry about it next summer but my ds will still have asthma so we won't practically be able to do anything different.

ikeaismylocal · 16/07/2014 21:29

They aren't around bird shit as we don't/can't use the balcony, we look at the birds out of the window. Luckily we have a lovely communal garden with a fab park and swimming pool so we go and play there.

GobbolinoCat · 16/07/2014 21:38

Our lovely neighbours who smoke have very kindly and lets face it - at no trouble to them have simply moved their smoking position very slightly to give the smoke a chance to go elsewhere...which it does, we occasionally get a waft now, but bearable compared to on slaught we had before!!

its not hard to do, it can be done..

we had two lots, thankfully the awful ones I had to call police on have left...its BLISS.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 16/07/2014 21:40

Well clearly you go out there sometimes to feed the birds and pile up more shit. Every time you do so, you will be letting in more dust and spores from the bird shit, which is really not good for lung health - it'll be having far more of an impact than a bit of smoke blowing across now and again.

Seriously, if you care about your DC's health you should clean it up.

EveDallasRetd · 16/07/2014 21:51

The 2008/9 study into outdoors passive smoking proved that as long as the non smoker is 6-7 ft away from the smoker they are not breathing in any 'extra' dangerous chemicals (whether you can smell it or not).

Thurlow · 16/07/2014 21:54

This is great. I do a enjoy a good anti-smoking thread Grin

Just ask. I'm a smoker (and to answer a point made earlier "Do smokers smoke occasionally?" yes, plenty do...) and when we first moved into our house I smoked outside the back door. Then one evening I realised how much the smoke was wafting into the house, and moved away a bit.

If either of my neighbours said that they could smell it in their house I'd move.

I wouldn't move if they just started creating a nappy and fish wall, though...

I hang up fat balls for the birds so they last for ages, I'm not concerned about opening the door once every couple of weeks and letting bird poo dust in, the junk and bird food is not right outside our door, it's much closer to the neighbour's balcony.

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/07/2014 22:53

This thread is hilarious. Honestly, some people need to get out more!

In answer to your actual question op, just ask if they would be able to move a little further away from the windows. They might say yes, they might say no. Entitled to do either.

murasaki · 16/07/2014 23:10

Ikea is clearly mad, and if I lived next door to her I'd chain smoke cigars. Her PFB is clearly in trouble due to OCD parenting, should we call SS?

WatchingSeaMonkeys · 16/07/2014 23:14

I'm a rabid ex smoker but I think that they can do what they like in their own garden TBH. If it offends you that much then you can close your window. There aren't that many places left that they can indulge in this legal habit.

I'm assuming that you never have BBQ's, noisy friends round or start your car up on your drive then OP?

And as for Ikea - you sound like the sort of council estate scummer that I'm glad we don't have to put up with! If your kid was banging his drums at 5 in the morning (which isn't legal BTW) I can guarantee I'd be banging on your nose 5 minutes later!! twat

Caff2 · 16/07/2014 23:27

Ikea - you do sound a bit unhinged! I think next door probably shake their heads at each other wonderingly about their remarkably strange neighbour. At least you probably provide them with entertainment value.

pictish · 16/07/2014 23:45

That's it Ikea - you stick it to those evil smokers with your pile of junk and balcony covered in pigeon shit. Confused

eeeee...I did laugh Grin

Iflyaway · 16/07/2014 23:48

Bet you drive a car or two.

Fuck off, I,ll smoke where I want.

LiquidCosh · 16/07/2014 23:51

This is hilarious! Ikea have you actually tried doing something radical like asking your neighbours not to smoke or move a bit so it doesn't come straight in your window? They're not mind readers but you definitely sound unhinged!

expatinscotland · 17/07/2014 00:23

I would enjoy ripping the piss out of you if you were my neighbour, ikea. I'd even film you being bonkers and put it on YouTube. As for your sprog's noise and your health hazard junk, I'd record all that, too, and just keep reporting you.

lessonsintightropes · 17/07/2014 00:43

Blimey Ikea you sound like the neighbour from hell. Good luck with all the faeces, feel very sorry for whoever has to live in smelling distance of your disgusting and insanitary home. And you are concerned about cigarette smoke?!
