Sainsbury's cafe

Was out shopping today with DD at our local Sainsbury's when decided we would have some lunch in the cafe. I ordered my DD who is only 11months old some toast to munch on. The lady rudely told me that breakfast had stopped at 11.30 and as it was now 1pm they couldn't do toast. I calmly explained that it was for my dd. She point blank refused, and when I ask why she said it was company policy. I was fuming that they couldn't put some toast in...it wasn't like I was asking for a bacon cob!!! We left and went to morrisons where they happily provided DD with some toast. Would it be ok to ring and complain. Still mad now!

Yabu. They said no. You could have given your child something else.Get over yourself.

YouTheCat · 15/07/2014 16:53

Why couldn't she have something else?

Yes you would be unreasonable to complain. They don't make toast at 1pm for anyone regardless of their age, that's their policy. If you don't like it go elsewhere!

ShatnersBassoon · 15/07/2014 16:55

They don't serve items from the breakfast menu beyond 11.30am. That's standard practice in cafes and shouldn't have surprised you.

I think you'd look really silly if you complained that they weren't flexible, when you were being inflexible by deciding it was toast or nothing.

Groovee · 15/07/2014 16:55

YABU. If it's company policy, then they have to follow it.

Anarchy99 · 15/07/2014 16:55

Is this another pisstake thread?

Or are you really saying that Sainsbos should have made an exception for you?

If this is legit, please go ahead and ring Head Office to complain - it will give them something to laugh about.

londonrach · 15/07/2014 16:55

It's lunch time not breakfast. I bet they were busy serving that. You can't go into a cafe and just order whatever you feel like if not on the menu. Couldn't your dd have something else. Yabvu

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 15/07/2014 16:56

Morrisons cafe is much better, don't kids eat free?

Yab a bit unreasonable. Your dd could have eaten something else.

DurhamDurham · 15/07/2014 16:56

You are going to ring and moan, perhaps getting someone in trouble because they followed the rules set down to them by their employer?
There must have been something else your dd could have eaten.

Numanoid · 15/07/2014 16:56

YABVU. It's company policy, she doesn't make the rules. You could have ordered something else.

Timeforabiscuit · 15/07/2014 16:57

That's bizarre! They're a cafe!

OK they're well within their rights to refuse, I'd send a bemused comment to the store manager that if toast was beyond the capabilities of time and staff expertise then should get out of the cafe business.

Costa do toast which is stuff of legend btw

Numanoid · 15/07/2014 16:57

If this is legit, please go ahead and ring Head Office to complain - it will give them something to laugh about.

Grin

I used to deal with complaints for a company and I have to admit, this sort of thing really does lighten your day a bit!

Timeforabiscuit · 15/07/2014 16:58

And wtf upthread! Its a cafe and she asked for toast not flipping caviar!!

OwlCapone · 15/07/2014 16:59

Why should it have made a difference that it was for your DD? Confused

A bread roll would have sufficed.

InSummer · 15/07/2014 16:59

It sounds silly to you, but they have to draw a line somewhere otherwise everyone would be asking for stuff not on the present menu.

LeBearPolar · 15/07/2014 17:00

Surely this must be a wind up in the wake of the Cedar Falls threads.

Why did you order your DD something that wasn't on the menu and expect to be served it?

FatalCabbage · 15/07/2014 17:00

YABU because the rules are obvious. She might not have been able to put it through the till either.

Also, Sainsbury's cafe has plenty of other items suitable for a baby, so it was up to you to be flexible.

(Morrison's cafe is superior in every way though)

I8toys · 15/07/2014 17:01

YABU - they don't do toast after 11.30 - end of story - get over it.

stripedtortoise · 15/07/2014 17:01

Seems a bit shitty of them. It's only flipping toast. This is why the UK has such a shit rep for customer service. Nobody is willing to just be kind for the sake of it.

Wouldn't complain to head office though. Just go elsewhere.

DefiniteMaybe · 15/07/2014 17:02

I was in sainsburys cafe a few weeks ago and someone wanted toast and was refused. Would it be worth, rather than complaining, to suggest to whoever is in charge that toast is something you'd like to be able to buy all day?
Complaining about it is ridiculous but surely the people who make the policy won't know that their policies aren't suiting customers without being told.

TheFairyCaravan · 15/07/2014 17:02

So what that it's a cafe and she asked for toast and not caviar! They don't sell toast at 1pm because it is their cafe and their policy!

BikeRunSki · 15/07/2014 17:03

Lunch in Sainsbo with DD when she was a baby was always a very good excuse to order some of their delicious fruit brioche for this very reason.
