Sainsbury's cafe

Was out shopping today with DD at our local Sainsbury's when decided we would have some lunch in the cafe. I ordered my DD who is only 11months old some toast to munch on. The lady rudely told me that breakfast had stopped at 11.30 and as it was now 1pm they couldn't do toast. I calmly explained that it was for my dd. She point blank refused, and when I ask why she said it was company policy. I was fuming that they couldn't put some toast in...it wasn't like I was asking for a bacon cob!!! We left and went to morrisons where they happily provided DD with some toast. Would it be ok to ring and complain. Still mad now!

So you're one of 'those' parents who think that if you use the child as the reason then any exception must be made Hmm yabu, but do give them a call and give them a laugh.

WanderingTrolley1 · 15/07/2014 17:03

Yabu.

The world doesn't revolve around you!

YouTheCat · 15/07/2014 17:03

It'll be an itemised till and toast won't be on there as an item to be sold after 11.30.

I don't see why she could have had a sandwich or bread roll.

Timeforabiscuit · 15/07/2014 17:03

Draw a line

On toast

Its a toasty with no cheese

A panini without filling

I don't blame the op for complaining - its hardly out of scope for human creativity.

SauvignonBlanche · 15/07/2014 17:03

I got a bacon roll at 11:50 on Saturday in my local Sainsbury's.

I suspect reason they don't do toast after 11.30am is the staff are busy serving lunch. Toast is cheap to sell and probably at that time takes longer to do so not worth the time. I bet they had a lovely bread roll or scone your dd could have had.

blondiebonce · 15/07/2014 17:06

Often you'll find with these policies is that even though you think that doing a bit of toast as a one off for your little girl isn't really a big deal, if everyone asked for variations away from the policy with the same attitude as you, they'd end up struggling with all the requests.

Not saying you were wrong or even that they were, just how some catering businesses regard things like this.

Floggingmolly · 15/07/2014 17:06

I calmly explained it was for my dd. Did you, seriously?? Grin
Why in the name of God would you expect them to serve a breakfast item outside breakfast time just for her, cute though she undoubtedly is?

Eebahgum · 15/07/2014 17:06

I'm going to buck the trend here and say stick a complaint in. Sainsburys are crap at catering for families. I was shocked to discover when ds was weaning that they had no facilities for warming food. I couldn't do it myself and they wouldn't do it for me in the kitchen. This sounds like the same kind of thing - I appreciate they have children's meals (for about £5) but that was way too much food for ds. They clearly have bread and a toaster so why is it policy not to make a piece of toast after a certain time? I complained and got a £5 voucher by the way.

Anarchy99 · 15/07/2014 17:08

Seriously? What difference did you expect that to make?

This is a supermarket café - it isn't a case of someone who cba to do toast. They sell what they sell, within the times specified.

PLEASE tell me this is a joke in the wake of Cedar Falls-gate!

ShatnersBassoon · 15/07/2014 17:09

Everyone knows the score with menus. They can change throughout the day. This isn't something unique to Britain.

TheFairyCaravan · 15/07/2014 17:09

Can 11 month old babies only eat toast, then? Is this a new thing?

SiennaBlake · 15/07/2014 17:09

I used to hate customers like this when I worked in unnamed supermarket's cafe. We always had the people trotting out "but it's for the baby/child/alien from mars" line too and expecting us to make an exception. If we made and exception for anyone who asked, we wouldn't stop doing things that weren't on the menu after a certain time.

Anarchy99 · 15/07/2014 17:10

I'd send a bemused comment to the store manager that if toast was beyond the capabilities of time and staff expertise then should get out of the cafe business.

Hmm Nice.

If you don't like the rules of a company, you are well within your rights to go elsewhere.

Personally, I would like to be able to get fries at breakfast time from Maccys, but I can't, so that's that.

wheresthelight · 15/07/2014 17:10

As someone who used to work for them it isn't as straight forward as a toaster and a loaf of bread. Ot is a full size catering machine that takes time to heat up correctly before it can be used and as the breakfast rush had ended was probably in bits in the pot sink being washed up.

Yabu and you know it. They explained that toast was a breakfast item and breakfast was no longer being served. You could have ordered a variety of other items including ellas kitchen pouches

blondiebonce · 15/07/2014 17:15

Eebahgum you complained because when you took your own food into a cafe they wouldn't heat it up for you?

Timeforabiscuit · 15/07/2014 17:18

BUT THATS NOT FUCKING TOAST ITS A FUCKING POUCH

Fair enough if there is a big industrial toaster that can't just be switched on, but faceless company policies for no discernable purpose annoy the living shit out of me.

Eebahgum · 15/07/2014 17:18

Well, technically I wrote to them pointing out the differences between their facilities and those of other supermarkets and shops. I bought food for myself in the cafe. I didn't just walk in and ask them to heat his food up.

Onesleeptillwembley · 15/07/2014 17:19

Maybe you should get a group of argumentative twats that actually can't understand the facts like minded people that feel you've been discriminated against. You could spam Facebook and get them all outside the cafe eating toast. That'll learn em!

Floggingmolly · 15/07/2014 17:21

Really, eebahgum, you refused to spend £5 on a children's meal, and when you complained that the cafe wouldn't heat up some of your own brought from home (they can't, btw, it's against H & S regulations); they gave you a £5 voucher?
What an extraordinarily accommodating cafe that was, paying you to eat your own food on the premises. Are they still in business?

Timeforabiscuit · 15/07/2014 17:21

MacDonald's is a fast food restaurant, a cafe I would expect a different service.

That service includes toast.
