about an uncle's secret girlfriend coming to our wedding?

Dp has an uncle by marriage who is a bit hard work, most of dp's family dislike this man but I have always tried to be friendly to him.

We are getting married in the summer and dp's uncle is ofcourse invited, he has asked if his new girlfriend can come along which is no problem, the problem is he wants us to not tell anyone about his new girlfriend as it's a secret.

Dp's uncle was married to dp's aunt but the aunt sadly passed away about 5 years ago. The new girlfriend is a Thai lady who the uncle met in Thailand ( he owns a house there) the girlfriend speaks no Swedish (dp's family's language) she does speak some English ( my family's language) it would make sense to sit uncle+girlfriend with my family so the gf can join in the conversation.

The thing I'm worried about is that dp's family will find out about the secret girlfriend when they help us with table plans/writing name place labels.

The same uncle also wants to "gift" us 2 dances that will last 10 minutes each! He is going to do a waltz all by himself, all very odd but I don't want to say no and hurt his feelings.

Anyone else had secret/surprise guests at their wedding? How secret should I keep it?

Showed this thread to DH. He commented that perhaps it should be suggested to the uncle that a toaster would be a better gift.

Seriously OP - what do you want at your wedding?

ipswichwitch · 27/06/2014 22:47

God how I wish I had a Swedish solo waltzing uncle at my wedding - best I got was slightly odd aunt turning up in a bright orange mohair jumper! DH's side were all Confused, mine were virtually placing bets on her choice of outfit and level of eccentricity.

edamsavestheday · 27/06/2014 22:50

I love your uncle. Grin

Well, I love hearing about him, not sure he's got the same appeal if you are actually related to him and do actually have to put up with all his quirks... but please do report back and let us know what on earth he's up to!

Hope you have a glorious day with an amusing story...

themummyonthebus · 27/06/2014 23:10

Your wedding sounds like it's going to be awesome OP Grin And I love your comedy waltz idea with toddler, bump and DH to Ace of Bass. Since you'll be videoing dances anyway, perhaps you could video that one too?Grin

Seriously, have a fab day, it sounds like you have all the ingredients for a perfect marriage good sense of humour is the only thing you need

OP I remember your previous thread about the waltz (I assume it's you, there aren't two pregnant women marrying a Swede who is desperate to waltz).

IS there going to be a waltz played for everyone to join in? A shame that you already sent out the invites - you could have asked people to dress like Marie Antoinette, wigs and all. At least then your bump wouldn't be bigger than the dress.

Not too late to send out a last minute request?

Seriously though, I hope it all goes well. It sounds like you have a sense of humor to get you through the waltzes and mad uncle.

TimeForAnotherNameChange · 27/06/2014 23:32

If you deliver on your promise of video evidence, this is so going in classics!

ShutTheFuckUpBarbara · 27/06/2014 23:46

I am in tears this is hilarious!

OP I can't believe how relaxed you are about the whole thing!

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 27/06/2014 23:46

I'm just picturing some Louie Walsh style dramatic pirouetting type thing- it's too hilarious for words

TheSameBoat · 27/06/2014 23:53

I've had a shit week but this thread has cheered me up good and proper!

Do you have an extra table for a bunch of MNers? We could all do a flash mob. That'd give Unclezilla a taste of his own medicine and steal HIS thunder!

And if anyone asks us who we are we could ALL say we're his secret girlfriend!

Purlease OP!!!

TheEnchantedForest · 27/06/2014 23:55

Do you mean louis spence? :) though perhaps the odd uncle will be more like Louis Walsh!

This is the best wedding thread ever!

SouthernComforts · 28/06/2014 00:03

You are going to have the best wedding ever!

Bambambini · 28/06/2014 00:16

Jesus Op - why are you going with this? What about your other guests and is this normal behaviour at Swedish weddings? Saying that - this is one wedding I'd love to be a guest at - you should sell tickets!

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 28/06/2014 00:18

Paaaahh yes spence not Walsh pmsl it's been a long week....

BOFster · 28/06/2014 00:54

I am bemused, but definitely amused Grin...

trixymalixy · 28/06/2014 01:02

The whole thing sounds brilliant. Shame we have to wait until August.....

AlpacaLypse · 28/06/2014 01:10

Right, I have no shame in admitting I'm placemarking this one for future entertainment reference!

OP Your relatives and in-law-to-be-relatives appear to be even more demented than mine - that's pretty impressive Grin

Stratter5 · 28/06/2014 01:19

Blimes, that is bonkers. Any chance of you holding a raffle and the lucky MNer who wins gets to go to the wedding and video it for the rest of us?

NoodleOodle · 28/06/2014 01:19

Gifts of dances, that's just too funny.

Isabeller · 28/06/2014 02:08

Could you invite all secret girlfriends to be masked bridesmaids? Especially if you are dressed as Marie-Antoinette.

Swedish Uncle solo linedancing a waltz in periwig and tights while you sign the register/do photos should keep everyone entertained...

Fabulous, hope whole thing brilliant fun Grin

ikeaismylocal · 28/06/2014 08:03

I'd love to have a table of mumsnetters but unfortunately what with the secret girlfriend and other unexpected guests numbers are a little tight, but I promise to report back!

We didn't put any mention of presents on the invite so I can't really blame odd uncle for using his imagination.
I wonder if we'll get any other "unique" gifts.

Odd uncle has his heart set on doing his solo waltz all ny himself, he wasn't happy with the idea of doing it at the same time as everyone else waltzed.

lettertoherms · 28/06/2014 08:11

My god this is the best wedding thread ever.

I need to marry into a family of mad waltzing Swedes.

KatieKaye · 28/06/2014 08:11

Does odd uncle perform this unique "solo waltz" at all weddings, or are you just especially privileged?

It sounds a thing of rare and sensitive beauty. I'm sure at least one of the guests will want to record it for posterity and then it is only a short step to YouTube and internet fame. And to think it will all start at your wedding! What a gift he is giving you. So much more than a simple dance - more of an experience to remember forever. Long after your own wedding memories have faded you will recall the solitary glory of odd uncle waltzing around the dance floor in splendid isolation.

Have you forewarned the guests? If not, can I suggest investing in a pack of puppy pads? they are very absorbent and if you pop one of each seat they will cope with any little accidents your guests may inadvertently have.
