to just remove the bloody bolt?

Sorry, this is petty and quite long, but the situation has descended into war over a bloody gate and I'm bloody fed up with it

I live in a little housing estate which is situated on the edge of a village, to one side of us is another housing estate, the other open fields. All bar 2 houses are owned by our landlord, he also owns the road, our access track, etc, etc.

In the corner of our house is a gate which leads into the housing estate behind us along a footpath. It's got one of those Chubb locks on it but we are all allowed to use it and have all been given keys

This gate is the only access we have by foot into the village. The track out of our estate when you're driving is about 4 miles round along narrow, windy, country lanes to the village, school, shop, etc. all has been fine and we've all been living here, sharing the gate and going about our business happily for years

About 2 months ago a new neighbour moved in and has complained endlessly about the gate and there have been a few disputes about it.

About a month ago the new neighbour added a slidey bolt to the gate and every time someone went out through the gate, he'd slide across the bolt, meaning you couldn't get back in. This wasn't terrible if someone was around to come and open the bolt, but several times we've all been stuck the other side of the gate.

More disputes about this bloody gate ensued and the Landlord got involved. Landlord removed the bolt and warned the neighbour.

So, this morning I go to use the gate to take DD to school, to find the bloody bolt is back and neighbour has now added a padlock

WIBU/illegal to remove the bolt and shove it up the neighbour's arse ?

He sounds like a douche,

Maybe be just as annoying and start bolting his things like his letter box or car door Wink

KirjavaTheCat · 25/06/2014 15:19

They guy sounds like a jumped up control freak, moving himself in and declaring himself Gatekeeper.

Hope he didn't notice you removing it and give you any grief OP.

Stinkle · 25/06/2014 15:22

LOL @ gate-gate!

Bolt is now removed. I had left a note asking for owner of bolt to collect it from me, but following on from a post above, I'm about to change it to contact landlord.

if the gate belongs to the landlord, it is reasonable to return the bolt to the landlord or their agent.

If nutter neighbour has been making holes in their gate, perhaps it is malicious damage.

Blatherskite · 25/06/2014 15:54

at Gategate Grin

Definitely let the owner of the bolt know that they can retrieve it from the Landlord. It makes sure both that the Landlord knows that Bolt-twat has been up to his old tricks again and that Bolt-twat knows that the Landlord knows that he's been up to his old tricks again. It should also alert the Letting Agents to Bolt-twat's activities as he'll have to go through them to get to the Landlord. 3 birds = 1 stone bolt :)

It also stops him from putting it back on tonight ready for tomorrow's school run as he won't be able to get hold of the Landlord immediately either.

GateGate :o

Good luck, op.

ZenGardener · 25/06/2014 16:05

AlpacaPicnic · 25/06/2014 16:06

Loving 'gategate'
This could end up being a gooood thread...

Jayne35 · 25/06/2014 16:11

Absolutely not BU! What an obnoxious twat your new neighbour is Stinkle. I never understand how some people think they have the absolute right to do whatever they want and bugger everyone else.

And gategate Grin

GingerBlondecat · 25/06/2014 16:12

Keep the screw driver in your pocket. he may have extra bolts on hand

londonrach · 25/06/2014 16:13

Marking my place now Murray has won..

BlackeyedSusan · 25/06/2014 16:27

you will have to do school run with supplies. drink and snacks for the kids. football against fence is a particularly annoying noise. never leave it unguarded though as he will undoubtedly try to pop it. recorders for beginners. they must be doing recorderat school and must be able to practice if they can not get home in tome to do it.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 25/06/2014 16:34

Grin Grin LOL at Recorders for Beginners. God the screeching.

Stinkle · 25/06/2014 16:41

Mmmm....recorders. Might have to send DD2 and her friend to practice theirs on the little (communal) grassy area near the gate. It might finish him off, he's already mortally offended by the sight of them making daisy chains there.

Anyway, Landlord has rung. He'll deal with it (although, I've no idea how, NN has already had a warning and he's ignored that).

In the meantime I need to report the bolts each time they appear, and he's going to authorise the Letting Agent to send someone to remove them.

As an aside, DD1 has just returned from netball practice, gate is still open so he either hasn't noticed the bolt has gone, or he's run out of bolts

I think you need a little estate bonding activity. Have you had a communal barbecue yet?

You could bring out a stereo for a little atmosphere and ask everyone to bring something to cook. A few beers should make sure it goes well.

Just make sure you don't encroach on his space in any way.

If it goes well you could done one a week month over the summer Smile

PicandMinx · 25/06/2014 16:43

I am laughing at "run out of bolts"! Grin

everythingsgoingsouth · 25/06/2014 16:45

marking .

Stinkle · 25/06/2014 16:45

We do mostly get on well and have BBQs in the summer.

If NN keeps adding bolts and we manage to gather enough, we could have a communal activity of covering his house in them

OP posts:
londonrach · 25/06/2014 16:47

99p shop or pound shop sell bolts but don't tell him! Could be a new sport....cut the bolt to get the school run going.

Goldmandra · 25/06/2014 16:48

Have them, all welded together into an attractive sculpture and present it to him as a gift Grin

londonrach · 25/06/2014 16:57

Good idea gold

scrappydappydoo · 25/06/2014 17:00

Or you could removeremove the padlock and replace with a new one, then give everyone a copy of the key except him.

scrappydappydoo · 25/06/2014 17:01

Sorry tablet went a bit crazy - you only need to remove it once Grin

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 25/06/2014 17:06

Do come back and let us know if there's an update Stinkle. What a bizarre bloke. Why move into a road full of other people and then complain about them doing ordinary things like bike riding and gate using? Grin
