to just remove the bloody bolt?

Sorry, this is petty and quite long, but the situation has descended into war over a bloody gate and I'm bloody fed up with it

I live in a little housing estate which is situated on the edge of a village, to one side of us is another housing estate, the other open fields. All bar 2 houses are owned by our landlord, he also owns the road, our access track, etc, etc.

In the corner of our house is a gate which leads into the housing estate behind us along a footpath. It's got one of those Chubb locks on it but we are all allowed to use it and have all been given keys

This gate is the only access we have by foot into the village. The track out of our estate when you're driving is about 4 miles round along narrow, windy, country lanes to the village, school, shop, etc. all has been fine and we've all been living here, sharing the gate and going about our business happily for years

About 2 months ago a new neighbour moved in and has complained endlessly about the gate and there have been a few disputes about it.

About a month ago the new neighbour added a slidey bolt to the gate and every time someone went out through the gate, he'd slide across the bolt, meaning you couldn't get back in. This wasn't terrible if someone was around to come and open the bolt, but several times we've all been stuck the other side of the gate.

More disputes about this bloody gate ensued and the Landlord got involved. Landlord removed the bolt and warned the neighbour.

So, this morning I go to use the gate to take DD to school, to find the bloody bolt is back and neighbour has now added a padlock

WIBU/illegal to remove the bolt and shove it up the neighbour's arse ?

Marking Place.

Can't believe anyone missed penguin bollard-gate and now there's Gate-Gate Grin

Howsabout a MN business initiative manufacturing bollards that look like gates?

Joking apart it sounds like the NDN should be living in a detached house all on its own with no other human interaction.

He can't illegally block a right of way, let alone a right of way that's not even on land owned by him. Idiot. And unpleasant with it.

BiscuitMillionaire · 26/06/2014 21:59

Billy and Belinda Bollard

gotnotimeforthat · 26/06/2014 22:04

my god that is terrifying biscuit!!

ahh Fideliney is right, i have no impulse control. Now those creepy fuckers are going to be following me too.

CloverHeart · 26/06/2014 22:08

Marking this! Gate-gate for MN classics!

It sounds like NN might get a kick up the arse if he keeps costing the LL money having to replace gates every month or so Hmm

Sounds like an awkward git to me - there is one in EVERY cul-de-sac!

mineofuselessinformation · 26/06/2014 22:13

Now look, will all of you stop 'marking your place unashamedly'? okay, okay, I'm doing it too! Grin

Stinkle · 26/06/2014 22:17

Grin Now I'm worried this is all going to turn out boringly tame and you're all going to be disappointed.

I did manage to squeeze in another episode of Midsomer Murders tonight though. It was the weird bloke what dunnit

Jenni2legs · 26/06/2014 23:02

surely if the gate is to a public foot path or right of way it's illegal to lock it in the first place?

ShakyTheStork · 26/06/2014 23:55

I am liking the word "sprovoking" it has great potential Smile

Great thread, by the way Grin

steppemum · 27/06/2014 10:27

Jenni, the gate isn't joining 2 public foot paths, it is from private land onto the footpath, a bit like your own garden gate onto a road. The owner can lock it if they want to.

Stinkle · 27/06/2014 10:39

Jenny as Steppe says, this side of the gate is a private housing estate! the gate leads to the public footpath and the housing estate behind us. The gate doesn't block a public right of way

Still no bolt

Please excuse any rogue !, I'm not over excited or shouting, my shitepad has taken to autocorrecting , to !

Maybe nn is a mnetter in secret and watching this this....... (Moves deck chair and considers knocking on nn door to report recent theft of bolts in the area....)

JerseySpud · 27/06/2014 21:06

Just checking in.

Still no bolt back on Boltgategate?

Whereisegg · 27/06/2014 21:17

Your neighbour sounds like an idiot (at best), but cracking thread op Grin

KenAdams · 27/06/2014 21:29

Did you take a photo OP? I'm trying to imagine where you live and in my head it's idyllic Smile.

TheCuriousOwl · 27/06/2014 21:49

So in Windsor there is a primary school that has 4 of those Billy and Belinda Bollards and they are really, REALLY creepy. They give the impression of small children about to run into the road. Then you look at them properly and they look like some creature from Dr Who.

steppemum · 27/06/2014 22:30

there are 2 outside a school near us, black and red uniform painted on, one child painted as black and one white. Totally agree that they look like something from Dr Who.

Is it he doesn't like anyone at all people walking past his garden - 'invading his privacy'?
Good Luck OP and hopefully he will be gone at the end of his tenancy - or expect lots more hassle...Gategate might be the least of your problems.
My back path runs along the back of my ex nightmare NDN's garden - there is a 6ft + fence but just at the top of the path you can see into his garden - as can anyone walking along the main road!
Bought this house because of the path - we are off the road and it is easier/closer to come in down the path than at the front.
We used it as our main access (avoided looking into his garden).
Then he told me we had to keep our gate closed - it banged in the wind. But the latch was a bit tricky - inconvenient - and also mean we spent longer in the spot where we could see into his garden. DP kept forgetting, taking the bins out was a hassle.

So we propped it open with a brick. What followed was years of hassle. If we left the gate open he would walk out the front and round to close it...I popped out to run two errands once - left gate open - forgot something went back after 5 min gate closed, in house for less than 3 min - gate was closed- out for less than 5 min - gate was closed. It almost became a game. He was definitely obsessed. He used to kick the brick away, then he broke the latch - (gate couldn't be fastened closed - but he still moved the brick and pushed it to so it really did bang in the wind then! - think he wanted other neighbours to say something to us) Then he broke the gate. By then the police were already involved (this was far from the only problem) ...added to the harassment case (he told DP he would break it again if he didn't keep it closed -so it was definitely him)
Then he told me a surveyor had been round and we didn't in fact own the path, we couldn't use it anymore- but actually it was one of the things the solicitor had checked out -it did belong to us and only we could use it! And it dawned on me what his problem actually was ...
I'd stopped using the path by then anyway - and if he had asked nicely maybe DP would - and we could have reassured him we deliberately didn't look into his garden....but that would have been too easy/sensible....
Like I said - Good Luck OP and hopefully he will go and hassle someone else soon...

Another poster here plagued by scary child bollards, but IRL rather than adverts. Bollardgate thread had a few posters mentioning them in Nottingham. I know the very beasties. Evil they are. Loving this thread btw, and I agree that OP seems to live in a lovely place.
