To not understand UK Jihadists?

I was going to post in the politics section but it looks completely deserted.

I am not trying to start any kind of row/bunfight/trouble.

I want to ask someone to explain a few things. There are aspects of Jihad I don't understand and nor does anyone else I've asked in RL.

How can UK born jihadists, who go to fight in Iraq (I'm thinking of Isis) or Syria, and kill civilians and Iraqi/Syrian nationals, justify what they are doing? Not that killing anyone else is any more justifiable in my eyes but I thought it was the West they deplored, not their fellow Muslims.

Also, If jihadists are killing Iraqi citizens in car bombings etc, how can they deplore the Western military for doing a similar?

Taking into account all the explanations I read on here for the behaviour of these young men I still don't understand what these young men are doing.
The one who spoke in the video had the opportunity to get one of the best medical trainings in the world which he could have used to enhance even save people's lives. Instead he chose to go to another country and kill people and encourage other people to do the same.
OP I am mystified.

mimishimmi - I don't think one can compare serving in a uniform to fighting for some jihadist group in Syria. How many people who have served in the Israeli army have been convicted of terrorism in the UK? How many are likely to come back here and blow themselves up on public transport?

I also disagreed with your comment on religion. Ultra-orthodox Jews are the least likely to volunteer for the Israeli army, even though they have the most isolationist approach.

That's an excellent point!
