No more biased commentary. No more mention of 1966 for now
They're going home Grin

WildThong · 20/06/2014 21:58

Oh, and thanks Compo for that massive and totally insulting generalisation.

CoreyTrevorLahey · 20/06/2014 21:59

This thread is mental.

DH is a Rangers fan and was v sad when they got relegated. Especially when Rangers are just good hardworking Scottish boys who attend the kirk and don't get excited about things, unlike Catholic Celtic fans like me who are flighty, drunk and lazy and think we're poets.

Grin Joke, by the way. We do enjoy our mixed marriage.

TheBogQueen · 20/06/2014 22:02

How do you cope Corey?

I'm so glad Scotkand no longer play England. It's bad enough when England play at the World Cup. It's all scottish people want to talk about. And they are confused when I truly don't give a shit.

blondiebonce · 20/06/2014 22:04

I'm thrilled...i am free to give birth whenever baby wants now without my partner worrying it will coincide.

windchime · 20/06/2014 22:04

I always love it when England get knocked out which is usually sooner rather than later. Bliss.

samsam123 · 20/06/2014 22:04

well I wish we were still in. Cant wait for the Tour de France starting in this country it will be fantastic and an honour for it to be held here. Bring on Wimbledon and the Open Golf and the Commonwealth games. Then the footy season starts again and I can be really happy COYH.

TheBogQueen · 20/06/2014 22:07

Commonwealth games! Will be brilliant in lovely glasgow. Really looking forward to it

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 20/06/2014 22:10

Well I'm vair happy this evening.

CoreyTrevorLahey · 20/06/2014 22:16

Oh, when he makes Rangers-related noises, I just blot them out, TheBogQueen. Smile

TheFairyCaravan · 20/06/2014 22:19

I'll still have to watch it. DS1(19) loves football, he'll watch it no matter what. He just won't go to the pub for the England game!

ComposHat · 20/06/2014 22:30

As it goes I have no more time for Queen's Celtic than I do for Pope's o' Rangers. Two cheeks of the same arse as far as I am concerned.

Wild if you notice I said the ' sectarian bigots who attach themselves to Rangers' I was not all or even the majority of Rangers fans, but as a club they are a beacon for all sorts of derranged sectarian wankers. Although no other fans other than Rangers fans have taken a shite in our stair, so I'm not 'making it all about Rangers.' If a Celtic fan defecates in our stair, I'll be equally disgusted. But the behaviour of SOME Rangers fans in Easter Road is demonstrably worse than any other supporters with the possible exception of Aberdeen.

WanderingAway · 20/06/2014 22:52

I wanted to see england do well but they just didn't play very well at all. I am scottish by the way, don't know if that makes a difference.

Aeroflotgirl · 20/06/2014 23:57

I really don't know why England bothers they have not brought it home since 1966, players are on over inflated salaries. Performance related pay it should be!

Igggi · 21/06/2014 00:14

I hate football, I hate sectarianism (with good reason). Need to get that out of the way.
But there is an obvious reason why Compos has seen worse behaviour from Rangers fans at Easter Road than Celtic fans. Those frequenting Tynecastle may have had the opposite experience.

ComposHat · 21/06/2014 00:14

Sighs...
Players are given a modest match appearence fee for appearing for England. They donate that fee to a nominated charity, so effectively they play international football for nothing.

Aa for not bothering.... well only six other nations have won the world cup since the war, so it is a fairly exclusive club to belong to. They generally make it out of the group and are usually a quarter final team and were two penalties away from the final in Italia 90. It isn't a fantastic record and certainty not up there with the likes of Germany, Italy and Brazil, but it isn't disastrous either.

ComposHat · 21/06/2014 00:17

Iggi - my wife lived near Tynecastle and some of the Rangers fans behaviour was equally atrocious. The Edinburgh rivalry is predominantly geographical (Hibs in the north and east, Hearts in the south and west)

Igggi · 21/06/2014 00:21

I have anecdotes about Celtic fans behaviour at another ground - if I post them does it prove anything? Of course not.
I agree partly on the geography but it can't be denied that one team attract more of a Catholic support and one Protestant. You'd be a brave Hearts fan to live in Leith (though I do know one Grin )

WildThong · 21/06/2014 00:23

Absolutely no point discussing further.

ComposHat · 21/06/2014 00:38

As I've said up thread I have no truck with celtic's flavour of sectarian bigotry either amd don't doubt there are knucklescraping morons amongst their support but Rangers record of violence both in Scotland and in European fixtures far surpasses Celtic's.

There may well be proportionately more catholic Hibs fans, I don't know. But it isn't an absolute divide and tge rivalry doesn't express itself in sectarian terms. I've never heard sectarian chanting or comments during an Edinburgh derby.

wild as a Rangers fan it must be distressing to experience a media source that doesn't worship the ground Rangers walk on, but this isn't the Scottish Su/ Bbc Scotland but , you can't shut down discussions on your say so.

Toadinthehole · 21/06/2014 04:55

At least England won the football world cup in 1966. In 1978 Scotland won the world cup for hubris.

And they've never got over it either, which is why they bridle at any pretensions England have at winning anything.

It also enables them to pretend that Scotland could never really have been a footballing power, whereas the truth is that given Scotland's footballing heritage, the underperformance of its national team ought to be a scandal.

deakymom · 21/06/2014 05:54

personally i think there should be a dedicated channel for sports that i don't have to watch (free of course)

i dont like football but even ive noticed this years car crash really would have been better for the economy them staying in think of all the wasted sales on junk food and drink!

deakymom · 21/06/2014 05:58

and no they don't donate their fee they are encouraged to do it but they really don't have to and a lot of times they actually don't

there clubs pay them too much its the fans that pay with ticket sales

we import talent we should develop our own its why we are a shambles because we train other countries and they play against us during the world cup has no one else thought of the fact they know all our weaknesses?

but it still don't like football the making a mess on a global scale that embarrassment of looking like we cant even play the game......................

EverythingCounts · 21/06/2014 07:46

Sarinka, what's with your denying that DV rises after matches? Care to back that up?

Aeroflotgirl · 21/06/2014 09:23

The rest of the year they get huge sums from their respective Football clubs. As their salary increases playing has gotten worse!

ApocalypseThen · 21/06/2014 09:52

Players are given a modest match appearence fee for appearing for England. They donate that fee to a nominated charity, so effectively they play international football for nothing.

That's great. I'm sure the fees for the advertising of various items, as well as the opportunity to promote their abilities to international clubs almost compensate them for appearing in the World Cup for charidee.
