But why is it always these minty old buggers and these women who are young enough to be their daughters?

I guess, if I'm honest, I'm a leetle bit disappointed with our Colin. He's also made Womance with Emily Blunt ffs, she's only in her 20s…. I guess if you can get away with it you do it as long as you can as an actor, make hay Colin, make hay.

I came on this thread to say I'd be surprised if Woody Allen made a casting decision for a pairing that wasn't a mature male lead and a much younger female lead!

Me too. And bizarrely there still seems to be a cachet in doing so; like doing a Shakespeare play or big name Hollywood actors playing in a 700 seater theatre in London.

I really don't get it. And there's been a resurgence. He's out of Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Rhys Meyers territory, and now he gets Cate Blanchett and Emma Stone, who seems such a promising feminist voice in other respects. I blame Penelope, though I still love her. She alone made a WA film watchable!

Hang on. Point of order. According to wikipedia, Arthur Newman was released in 2012, two months after Emily Blunt's 28th birthday, and Colin Firth was 51 when it was released, as he has an autumn birthday.

I think Emma Stone looks somewhat older than 24, although obviously nowhere near Firth's age.

Film looks crap. Iwanna see it now.

I have decided that I'll never watch another WA film again. It's loathsome the way he trots out some of the best actors in the world, and none of them seem to mind a bit that his own daughter has said he abused her. How callous.

Elephants can't remember what the last Woody Allen film I saw was but I agree. He's been on my blacklist for years now.

Woody Allen is the archetype of minty old buggers. He had a sexual relationship with one adopted daughter, and was accused of having abused another. Still, they weren't actual blood-relatives so it wasn't actual incest so that probably makes it OK in his eyes. If that isn't bloody creepy I dunno what is. I'm surprised any actors who care about their reputations agree to work with him. I wouldn't in a million years.

Woodly Allen is creepy. He cheated on his wife, Mia Farrow, with his stepdaughter. Gross! And she was still young when it started if I recall correctly.

Having said that, a few of Woody Allen female leads have received Oscars. Cate Blanchette, Mira Sorvino, and Penelope Cruz from memory. I am sure there are more who have been won or at least been nominated. So, I think actresses, who want an Oscar, would want to star in his movies.

If you look at the personal lives of many highly creative people, you will find a lot to criticise, from Ancient Greek philosophers to current pop stars and lots of artists, writers, composers, etd in between.

You may hate Woody Allen's films, but that is a separate issue. He has made some great films, I think, in addition to some lousy ones and some creepy ones.
