To think Colin Firth and Emma Stone in Woody Allen's new movie at 28 years age difference is a little creepy?

I mean I know it's fine and legal, Colin Firth is lovely etc.

But why is it always these minty old buggers and these women who are young enough to be their daughters?
I mean, isn't anyone involved a little embarrassed by this kind of casting?
sigh
Hmm

It is hardly unique is it? Older man with much hotter, younger female partner. I am trying to think of a mainstream Hollywood comedy where the middle aged male lead had a partner who was the same age.

That one with Steve Carrell and Tina Fey is the only one that leaps to mind.

Hairylegs47 · 18/06/2014 08:42

I'm with Minty, never liked his movies. Tried to watch them, but they were just not my cup of tea. Someone always seemed obsessed with sex, it's boring, come up with something new.
It wasn't til years later I heard about his grooming. It explained a lot for me.

Anyone who 'stars' in any of his movies really goes down in my opinion. They're just feeding the acceptance of a dirty skanky man bet he has a small willie too

Rebecca2014 · 18/06/2014 08:44

This is Woody Allen here, who started an relationship with his step daughter and his own flesh blood daughter has accused him of molesting her as a child and I believe her.

I will never watch an Woody Allen movie.

dawndonnaagain · 18/06/2014 08:45

I don't care whether or not anyone likes Allen or his films. However, he has never been tried, let alone found guilty.

Darkandstormynight · 18/06/2014 08:57

I love WA films, well the earlier ones at least. Sure he's a bit creepy and neurotic, he's also a genius artist which is why I love his films. The age thing is his signature, which is insecure (at best!)

I'd rather have an older man making love to younger women than an old bugger like Sean Connery who freely admits women need to be slapped around a bit to keep them in line.

23 years? That's nothing. I've dated men 30 years older than myself.

Well it not Colin Firth's fault, but yes it's really annoying how only women decades younger are romantically linked with attractive older men in films. Why can't they ever be with someone my their own age?

ZanyMobster · 18/06/2014 09:03

I have dated men that much older than me and I would definitely date Colin Firth if I wasn't married Grin

I really don't think WAs private life is relevant, the older male/young female combination happens in many films. If she was 16 or 17 I can understand it but grown women in their 20s or 30s is nothing to get flustered over.

wigglesrock · 18/06/2014 09:05

It's not really a new thing in the cinema, Humphrey Bogart was 25 years older than Lauren Bacall when they were making films. She was 19 when they first starred together.

KikitheKitKat · 18/06/2014 09:07

Yes and it's always been annoying.

lettertoherms · 18/06/2014 09:12

I think Woody Allen is absolutely fucking disgusting and I refuse to support any film he makes.

I find it sad how many actors don't find it morally wrong to associate with him.

I don't believe you should separate an artist from his work in these cases. There's not agreeing with their views - say, knowing they prefer a different political party, and still admiring their work, and then there are situations like Allen and Polanski where they are just monsters - child rapists. I would not allow a cent of my money to go toward them as the result of seeing a film.

taccure · 18/06/2014 09:15

"If the roles were reversed everyone would just say "Mrs Robinson.""

I hate that!

ZanyMobster · 18/06/2014 09:17

I had only ever heard about WA and his personal life on MN, has he ever been charged for anything?

I don't watch his films as I have never liked any of them as they're weird.

taccure · 18/06/2014 09:22

No, I don't think it was proven about his daughter, but can't remember the particulars. I read the letter she sent to various celebrities about their involvement with her father Sad

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 18/06/2014 09:22

I don't care whether he was tried and found guilty of sexual abuse. In child protection we work on the balance of probability and I believe firmly that WA's actions with his step daughter/wife demonstrate a clear lack of respect for appropriate boundaries and sexual behaviour.

It's fine to say 'separate art from artist' except so many of WA's films seem to reflect and validate his worldview. His own art is not separate from his life so it's hard to separate them as a viewer.

What happened with his stepdaughter was also vastly inappropriate. Needless to say

There's a really good infographic kicking around the web somewhere about this. Like a bar chart with various leading men and the ages of their female love interests. Most were large age gaps, but there were a few with small gaps and one where the woman was a few years older than the male lead. Damned if I can remember what film it was though Hmm

Might see if I can find it.

katese11 · 18/06/2014 09:30

I blacklisted WA a long time ago on account of making crap films (Matchpoint, anyone?!) but I'm amazed by how impervious he is to scandal - damage. Whether someone's personal life should affect their career is irrelevant. .. fact is, it nearly always does. Yet he's still winning Oscars!

It's common in many films and is often never mentioned at all in the script - like it's a given that cause no issues what so ever.

It doesn't reflect most pairings I've encountered in life - though maybe things are different in hollwood - lots of older men with power and money with wifes/gf who are much much younger.

ZanyMobster · 18/06/2014 09:37

What I really meant is surely many people do not know about his private life, I saw a thread on MN but have never seen anything anywhere else about him. Also people may not believe it is true.

LemonSquares · 18/06/2014 09:38

unrealistic-hollywood-age-gaps

Examples of films/tv programs where the mothers are as little as 6 or 9 years older than their sons.

AnotherSpinningFuckingRainbow · 18/06/2014 09:38

What I find mind-boggling is how people don't seem to acknowledge WA makes fetish films.

How many films has he made now based on his own fixation of very young woman and old/middle aged man?
