To not get the "I have loads of kids so I can claim benefits and have an easy life"idea

Taking to my neighbour today who has five kids. Her and her husband claim benefits.
We live in a part council estate/ part privately owned
Today and many times in the past she has took great delight in telling me that they had five kids to claim all the benefits. She admits they would only have had one if they had to work.
Before I had DS 10 months early I just used to shrug and think "each to their own". I know this sort of talk would annoy a lot of people but I was of the opinion that I would not swap places with her for the world and my husband and I get a lot out of our careers.
So anyway talking to her today I realised something.
Taking care of a baby is hard work (never mind five under eight)
This lady is always running round after her kids and always looks completely knackard as does her hubby. They never seem to have any time to relax, the nights trying to get their kids to sleep are awful as they all have to share bedrooms and when one kids wakes it sets the others off.
I want to shake her and say "you do realise working is actually easier then having all these kids" (four if which you did not really want) though I course I have no doubt in my mind she loves them to bits.
I just don't get the thinking of some people!
Can I also say this is not a benefit bashing thread and I am highly in favour of the Welfare state for those who need it. I guess I just don't understand how some people think a house full of kids is easier then going to work. And that you would have kids for that reason.
Also is the amount you get really so fabulous that you would do this?

Yes linerunner it's almost unbelievable isn't it?
Grin

LineRunner · 14/06/2014 23:09

Indeed it is.

ICanHearYou · 14/06/2014 23:09

I haven't At any point say I fancy it, in fact I work very hard as a single mother not to do that!

However the benefits cap is 26k, that (when factoring tax) is the take home wage of someone on far more than NMW

gordyslovesheep · 14/06/2014 23:11

wow 10 months early - that is almost fantastically unreal Grin

FiveFingerDeathPunch · 14/06/2014 23:14

bollocks

gordyslovesheep · 14/06/2014 23:16

Take rent OUT of the benefits cap and realistically it's more like £18k

I have six dc they are expensive not profitable.

Fideliney · 14/06/2014 23:25

You are clearly not monetarizing them properly Soon.

Have you tried manipulating them into cute accidents and sticking the footage on YouTube?

FiveFingerDeathPunch · 14/06/2014 23:28

omg so now people on benefits get a cap!!Angry

Blindlyshining · 14/06/2014 23:30

There should be a test to see if they DESERVE the cap though Fivefinger

FiveFingerDeathPunch · 14/06/2014 23:31

too right
I am horrified
so they get goats
now capsEnvy

candycoatedwaterdrops · 14/06/2014 23:33

I have always got on well with my neighbours. We chat most days. As far as I can recall, we have never discussed finances in details. I'm always surprised at the level of detail some people's neighbours share. Where do these people live?!

Blindlyshining · 14/06/2014 23:34

I wonder if each of the kids get a cap?
The lazy entitled bastards should knit woolly hats for themselves instead of taking money from hard working tax payers.
Next time my neighbour tells me what benefits she gets I will point this out.

FiveFingerDeathPunch · 14/06/2014 23:34

ahh this is why the kidz have hoodies
they can't afford caps

sugar21 · 14/06/2014 23:35

Shouldn't think either of them are on J.S.A as you only get it for 6 months then have prove you are unfit for work and if so you go on to E. S.A. which is about £100p.w. Of course said family would be entitled to child tax credit and child benefit. If you are deemed unfit for work you get N.I. credits. ATOS will badger the life out of you to see their Drs every 6months and that is why some disabled people have been deemed fit for work when in fact they're not. It's not all plain sailing, and the Government will make people train for something or do voluntary work as soon as ATOS says they are fit.
Only know this because my friend works at the benefits office.
I am on minimum wage but as I live and work in an hotel it's ok as I get my food free. Money for hot water etc is stopped from my pay. I don't think I could manage if I didn't live here.

hollycomputer · 14/06/2014 23:35

I'm anti Daily Mail but I have seen this first hand.

DB's EXW came from a benefit claiming family and she was determined not to work. None of her family had worked and she didn't feel she should either. She actually said this to me and DB. She felt it was unfair to expect her to work. She even tried to make DB give up his job so they could claim more.

Trust me, I'm not at all anti-benefit. When DB's EXW came out with this, we were all a bit shocked.

ICanHearYou · 14/06/2014 23:37

18k tax free is a decent income for most people in this country.

We need to do something about that, make the minimum wage a living wage and give people incentives to work, of course if we just insult and round on people who actually accept there is a problem and try and solve it, we won't change anything.

Blindlyshining · 14/06/2014 23:43

Hold on, OP clearly said this was NOT a benefits bashing thread. Let's not derail it please.

Can we concentrate on whether it is easy work for a family to have 5 kids solely for benefits?

I think the OP would be very upset if this somehow turned into a benefits bashing thread.

dawndonnaagain · 14/06/2014 23:46

I'm 55 and I fancy an eeeeeeeeaaaaaaaassssssyyy life, can someone tell me where to get more kids please.

DefiantRage · 14/06/2014 23:47

It makes me laugh how people are like 'erm no, don't believe it'

How deluded you are!

I know LOADS of people who are just like the OP says.

One even laughs about it saying how it's funny how her working friends can't afford holidays but she can just because she's had kids and gets benefits.

Blindlyshining · 14/06/2014 23:47

dawndonna you could marry an immigrant who could then bring his 8 kids over?

Blindly I could, couldn't I. Wonder if dh will mind? That would give me 12 children, too many, or just right?
