Very very dubious postman

Our postman at the moment looks like a total wrong-un. I have answered the door to him at least 3 times on seperate occasions and he has been sporting black eyes and looks like he's been in a fight (different time so not the same black eyes). I have also heard him swearing right outside the door before while talking on his phone. He actually really scares me.

This morning DH was walking back from the shop and intercepted the postman as he is expecting a delivery. He said he looks like a total scumbag and he reckons he's a football hooligan. Apparently he has scars all over his face and a swastika tattoo on his arm.

He hasn't actually done anything untoward but AIBU to question whether Royal Mail should employ someone like this? Surely repeatedly rocking up for work looking like an extra out of Fight Club when you are constantly in contact with the general public is not good for Public relations?

"Looking menacing" and having a bashed up face isn't a reason to deny someone employment, it probably can't be proven the black eyes are from brawling.

However, displaying hate symbols and loudly swearing on a client's property while at work are.

So, YA half BU and half NBU. Wink

Tbh, even if he was trying to 'reclaim' it, I think it's way too early to be reclaimed. Survivors are still alive (my grandmother, for one), people with close relatives involved are still alive, people who fought are still alive- actual original Nazis are still alive- and I think it's pretty offensive to most people, like the n word (which people are also trying to reclaim- fine individually, but not to be forced on people in public imo as they don't necessarily see it as something to be reclaimed). If he's an ex/reformed Nazi, he should cover it up somehow.

Bruises and scarring- could be anything. Could be something horrible and sad for him, like a crash, past/present abuse, a fight (which he didn't instigate). Could be something horrible which he caused, equally, but you can't judge. If you can see his swastika tattoo when he's out delivering, I'd complain. As you haven't personally seen it when he's handing over mail, I'd say you can't, but judge away! If you did see, I'd call up and ask if it could be covered.

I used to see quite a few assholes sporting the Nazi swastika in the shithole I grew up in, so I can well believe OP. Last time I visited family there, a man was wearing a Nazi swastika T-shirt in the local pub. A minority of people do seem to think it makes them "hard" to walk around wearing a symbol of the deaths of more than six million people.

I do fucking judge. I now live in a predominantly Asian area and the superficially similar Hindi symbol is not worn as a tattoo: you see it as a pattern on sarees or as a piece of jewellery. It's clearly different. Enough with all the I'm so cool, "oh, he might be wearing it as a religious symbol" posts Angry

TBH I kind of expect postmen and women to be a bit weird :) (No offence to any posties reading). My mates who have been posties tell of epic drug use and dodgy characters. At one sorting office "we were on speed to get up at 3am and then weed to get us back down again after 12". It sort of seems to attract people who are a bit out of society. As long as the post gets delivered, I don't mind Grin

I agree the swastika tattoo (if indeed it is the Nazi swastika) is pretty off, but all he could be asked to do is cover it at work. I don't think him having "a menacing air" or "a dark aura" is reason enough to lose him his job. Best scenario, he's ex-fash and being a postie, hasn't enough money to get tattoo removal. Of course, that's not automatically the case - he could be Nazi and proud (headdesk) but not knowing, can't say - if the mail gets there on time and he is not racially abusing his customers, then unfortunate tattoos are neither here nor there.
