Very very dubious postman

Our postman at the moment looks like a total wrong-un. I have answered the door to him at least 3 times on seperate occasions and he has been sporting black eyes and looks like he's been in a fight (different time so not the same black eyes). I have also heard him swearing right outside the door before while talking on his phone. He actually really scares me.

This morning DH was walking back from the shop and intercepted the postman as he is expecting a delivery. He said he looks like a total scumbag and he reckons he's a football hooligan. Apparently he has scars all over his face and a swastika tattoo on his arm.

He hasn't actually done anything untoward but AIBU to question whether Royal Mail should employ someone like this? Surely repeatedly rocking up for work looking like an extra out of Fight Club when you are constantly in contact with the general public is not good for Public relations?

May well be the case. Be difficult to prove though.

longestlurkerever · 14/06/2014 20:20

Well often discrimination can't be proven, obviously, but sometimes employers are silly enough to give it away in what they say, the questions they ask, etc. Plus I work on the public sector where recruitment is marked quite strictly to ensure fairness. If you got the highest score and didn't get the job, you would be entitled to ask why, but 'because you had a Nazi tattoo on your face' would be a fine reason.

glasgowstevenagain · 14/06/2014 20:41

I used to go to work black and blue as my ex was handy with her fists.

No tattoos though am a naice boy

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 14/06/2014 21:04

Okay, he has a swastika tattoo and looks menacing.

Tattoos are a twat if you regret them the night after the event.

Appearances are deceptive, you don't have to look like a nasty twat to be one, remember Shipman.

You and your H sound like twats, how's that for a thought.

Ronmione · 14/06/2014 21:23

Maybe you could report him, maybe even get him the sack. Then he can go on benefit and you can moan about him but working for a living

LiberalLibertine · 14/06/2014 21:26

because you had a Nazi tattoo on your face would be a fine reason Grin

MiniatureRailway · 14/06/2014 21:30

Hmm. I think maybe you are being a bit judgy but I work with the public, (for the local authority so I suppose a similar employer) and black eyes and swastika tattoos just would not happen.

MiniatureRailway · 14/06/2014 21:34

Excuse that rogue comma. My phone in-corrects my grammar. Grin

Stillstayingclassy, if he does indeed have a swastika tattoo then damn right he has done something wrong. Respect and revere a political party and ideology that caused incomprehensible suffering to millions and millions of people, to such an extent that he publicises the symbol every single bloody day.

TucsonGirl · 14/06/2014 21:51

Other than the swearing on your doorstep, YABU. He's a postman. Does he deliver your mail intact, on time? If yes, than he is doing his job. Maybe he should cover his tattoo up. Would you rather have him on the dole?

Justnapping · 14/06/2014 22:09

Erm is he delivering your mail?! If yes then YABVU. It's not like he's your PFB's schoolteacher! Just let him get on with his job.

LiberalLibertine · 14/06/2014 22:15

In all honesty,I know someone that has tattoos that he is now really embarrassed and ashamed of, he generally keeps them covered and there's too many to sort out completely, but the point is he's not that person anymore, very far from it actually.

Viviennemary · 14/06/2014 22:17

He's only a postman not a vicar or equivalent. Good heavens!

NinjaLeprechaun · 14/06/2014 22:32

Maybe he's a follower of the Asatru religion, and what you're calling a swastika is a fylfot and he's trying to reclaim it for the non racists. (I know people who have done this.) If that's the case, then not hiring him because of it would be genuine religious discrimination.
This is a thing you don't actually know just by looking at him or his tattoo.

FlimFlamFloo · 14/06/2014 22:32

mind those judgy pants don't give you a wedgy.

he might regret the tattoo, he might not. he might teach boxing, he might not.

i wouldn't complain until i had asked him about it all or he shat on my mail prior to delivery.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 14/06/2014 22:33

In surprised how tolerant many posters here are to swastikas.

squoosh · 14/06/2014 22:34

I'd happily and easily judge anyone with a swastika tattoo.

Longdistance · 14/06/2014 22:44

This post reminds me of dh in rugby season. Bloody hell, he looks black and blue weekly. He's in a professional job too. I get Blush sometimes when he says he has important meetings with bosses, but they must know he plays rugby as his cauliflower ear and wonky nose are a give away.

I'm not too sure about the tattoo, but he may have got it in his youth stupidly, but I'd be covering that up tbh.

Bluebelljumpsoverthemoon · 14/06/2014 22:44

Swastika tattoo; your husband probably saw wrong, I would be very surprised at anyone in a public facing job sporting a nazi symbol on their arm. Even if he was correct, you don't know him, he could be a reformed nazi for all you know. Less likely but possible is that he didn't put it there himself(possible if it looks amateur), some thugs carve their victims up. Who knows, you don't.

Beaten scarred face; an employer can't fire someone because they have black eyes or facial scars ffs. He's either been in a car accident or been victim of an attack. Again you don't know, stop judging.

Swearing on the phone; he didn't know you could hear him, people swear, get over it.

You have a bad feeling about him; he may not be a nice person or you may be a very judgemental one who's paranoid about someone who's not like you and projecting your prejudices onto them. Your judgement of his scars, black eyes and immediate assumption he must be responsible for getting them doesn't really make me think you're the objective type.

squoosh · 14/06/2014 22:48

Being 'judgeyl' seems to be the number one crime on MN. But we make judgements on people whenever we meet them, it's impossible not to. I just don't believe that people would have a judgement neutral reaction to the person as described by the OP.

Rollergirl1 · 14/06/2014 22:55

Yes I am judging him based on what I have seen and I'm not denying it and i'm not ashamed. It's all very well for people on the internet to say maybe this and maybe that and your husband didn't see what he says he saw. But you haven't

I am not paranoid. I am not projecting my own prejudices. Each individual observation could be explainable but put them all together and you can forgive me for jumping to the obvious conclusion.

Anyway, I didn't ask if I was being unreasonable for judging him. I have and I dare any of you to not do the same if you were to come in contact with him. I was asking if I was being unreasonable to question Royal Mail for keeping him in employment.

MamaMumra · 14/06/2014 23:17

Is judge anyone with a swastika tattoo. YANBU.

MamaMumra · 14/06/2014 23:17

I'd not is [tut]

MelanieCheeks · 14/06/2014 23:22

You can judge him for having a swastika tattoo. Though you only have hearsay evidence of that. But unless that stops him delivering letters correctly i don't think its a sackable offence.

You could try contacting royal mail and asking what their policy is on visible tattoos?
