Very very dubious postman

Our postman at the moment looks like a total wrong-un. I have answered the door to him at least 3 times on seperate occasions and he has been sporting black eyes and looks like he's been in a fight (different time so not the same black eyes). I have also heard him swearing right outside the door before while talking on his phone. He actually really scares me.

This morning DH was walking back from the shop and intercepted the postman as he is expecting a delivery. He said he looks like a total scumbag and he reckons he's a football hooligan. Apparently he has scars all over his face and a swastika tattoo on his arm.

He hasn't actually done anything untoward but AIBU to question whether Royal Mail should employ someone like this? Surely repeatedly rocking up for work looking like an extra out of Fight Club when you are constantly in contact with the general public is not good for Public relations?

Yanbu he sounds dreadful.

LiberalLibertine · 14/06/2014 19:13

It's not illegal to have a swastika tattoo, wether you'd employ him or not is completely up to you, you can not give someone a job for any reason.

Will people judge you for having a swastika tattoo, yes of course, and probably judge you correctly.

AbbeyBartlet · 14/06/2014 19:14

Even if he had a nefarious past that doesn't mean he can't be a postman. He may even have changed! I know plenty of people who have had tattoos they regret and people who were utter bellends when they were younger and who have become decent members of society.

Apart from the swearing, he hasn't done anything to you - or are you happy for him to risk losing his job because you don't like the look of him?

AbbeyBartlet · 14/06/2014 19:16

And just assuming he is someone who is trying to live his life like every

Rollergirl1 · 14/06/2014 19:17

There is nothing for me to do as he hasn't done anything wrong. I just find him very scary and intimidating and i'm surprised that he is doing the job that he is. But it appears I am in the minority there.

AbbeyBartlet · 14/06/2014 19:18

Like everyone else, then perhaps it would be better not to judge him.

And for the record, I am neither left wing nor liberal, I just think that people sometimes deserve a chance.

Rollergirl1 · 14/06/2014 19:19

I shall reiterate once more. I am not going to complain about him as he hasn't done anything to warrant it. But I am still allowed to think he's a scary looking fucker who is probably up to no good judging by the state of his face.

TheSarcasticFringehead · 14/06/2014 19:22

The rest of it, I wouldn't judge on. So many possibilities. But the swastika? I know one person with an offensive tattoo (and not even NEAR that, it's just a swear word) and although he's now a professional, nice shopkeeper, he covers it up (with a big plaster) because he doesn't want to offend people. It's not illegal but I'm Jewish, I have relatives who are still alive and were survivors of the Nazis- I would find having a swastika tattoo, and if it's a tattoo they regret, not covering it up, inexcusable.

longestlurkerever · 14/06/2014 19:25

Liberal- I am afraid you are wrong about that, in the UK at least . If the reason you are not giving someone a job is because you are discriminating against a protected characteristic (age, race, religion, sex and sexual orientation etc) then you may face a successful discrimination claim. This does not extend to discriminating against someone who chooses to adorn their body with a hateful fascist symbol.

plantsitter · 14/06/2014 19:28

Sounds like the Postman from [[http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/files/2012/04/postman-plod.jpg Viz]]!

Sorry no advice as you can't really report him. You could ask him not to swear outside your front door though.

pinkyredrose · 14/06/2014 19:31

OP there are different types of swash it msy easily not have been a Nazi swastika. Ask your DP what he can remember about it.

RandallFloyd · 14/06/2014 19:31

He's delivering post, not delivering babies.
As long as he does his job then being a wrong 'un matters not one bit.

I would judge the ever-living arse out of anyone with a swastika tattoo and I'm pretty sure any employer would be unhappy about it being on display whilst wearing a work uniform but that's the only issue I can see.

Also, I would imagine sporting a swastika tattoo and having black eyes go pretty much hand in hand.

pinkyredrose · 14/06/2014 19:32

Bollocks sorry about the typos! I meant there are different types of swastika!

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 14/06/2014 19:39

God forbid if you'd ever met one of our former plumbers, the nicest bloke but covered in tats!

OP, he's working, doing his job and not robbing you.

Give him a break.

SuburbanRhonda · 14/06/2014 19:39

What kind of "no good" do you think he's up to, OP?

NoArmaniNoPunani · 14/06/2014 19:41

I'm covered in tattoos but I would most definitely judge someone with a swastika tattoo

Rollergirl1 · 14/06/2014 19:41

Randall: Exactly. You could argue that he runs a boxing club for disillusioned teenagers but couple the bruises with the tat and the chances are that he's not.

If any of my colleagues turned up to work and stood in front of clients repeatedly with a battered face they would be told that they were not presentable. Why is a Postie any different?

OP posts:
longestlurkerever · 14/06/2014 19:41

Stillstaying. I don't think anyone is objecting to the number of tattoos.

Rollergirl1 · 14/06/2014 19:42

Suburban: Well, getting in to fights would be the immediate assumption.

OP posts:
catgirl1976 · 14/06/2014 19:46

I wouldn't be impressed at all with the swastika tattoo. And swearing on the job is unprofessional.

Maybe he deeply regrets the tattoo (though you would think he would cover it or have it turned into something else)

The rest of it YABU.

LiberalLibertine · 14/06/2014 19:48

longest how do they police that though? If ten people turn up for a job, in your mind you can think....he looks like he's gay, I'll choose someone else...that's up to you surely? As long as you don't say it to them?!

Meeeep · 14/06/2014 19:54

You actually sound more judgy about the face than the tattoo. If it's a swastika then it should not be on display, if he is displaying it then he would be in breech of his contract.

The rest of it, I'd be inclined to think there is a reasonable explanation for the black eyes as the Royal Mail would not leave the unaddressed. The scars could be product of an attack, misspent youth, an accident etc so should the judges upon. The swearing, well it wouldn't bother me. My postie swore at a bumble bee the other day (he jumped about a bit too).

Postmen go through DBS checks so he obviously doesn't have a serious criminal history if any at all. He's handling your post, not babysitting your kids. Just avoid conversation with him.

Meeeep · 14/06/2014 19:56

Ah sorry typos. So shouldn't judge upon...

Hopefully the rest is understandable

RandallFloyd · 14/06/2014 20:04

I'm more thinking that someone with visible racist tattoos probably gets punched in the face fairly often. Occupational hazard I should think.

RandallFloyd · 14/06/2014 20:06

And tbh I'm pretty sure you can't sack someone for getting punched too often!
