Very very dubious postman

Our postman at the moment looks like a total wrong-un. I have answered the door to him at least 3 times on seperate occasions and he has been sporting black eyes and looks like he's been in a fight (different time so not the same black eyes). I have also heard him swearing right outside the door before while talking on his phone. He actually really scares me.

This morning DH was walking back from the shop and intercepted the postman as he is expecting a delivery. He said he looks like a total scumbag and he reckons he's a football hooligan. Apparently he has scars all over his face and a swastika tattoo on his arm.

He hasn't actually done anything untoward but AIBU to question whether Royal Mail should employ someone like this? Surely repeatedly rocking up for work looking like an extra out of Fight Club when you are constantly in contact with the general public is not good for Public relations?

No it's not a joke and no I am not lying. I didn't see the swastika myself but I have no reason not to believe that DH mistook it.

Sorry, by PC I meant left wing and liberal.

I certainly didn't mean people were getting unnecessarily uptight about it.

I am appalled!

Rollergirl1 · 14/06/2014 18:50

I have mentioned the postman to DH in the past but today is the first time he has seen him himself.

That is if it is definitely a swastika. There are a couple of peaceful symbols very similar that are often mistaken for them. Btw, what exactly are you worried about? If its only his appearance, then tough, I may not like what you look like, but its none of my business

hollycomputer · 14/06/2014 18:52

I know what a swastika represents, but unless the owner of it had done something objectionable (apart from swearing on the phone) in front of me, I'm not sure I'd bother too much about it. Getting oneself needlessly worked up about others' appearances is a bit of a waste of brain space, IMO.

SuburbanRhonda · 14/06/2014 18:52

YABU to compare this person with someone out of Fight Club, a peerless film Grin

matildasquared · 14/06/2014 18:52

Thanks for clarifying Enjoying. Sorry to bite your head off.

The whole holocaust thing is living memory. Wearing a swastika means, "I hate Jews and I want them to die."

And I'm not actually okay with that, because I'm normal.

Why would her husband lie about seeing a swastika tattoo?

longestlurkerever · 14/06/2014 18:52

I don't think left wingers are normally known for their tolerance of fascist symbols, but apart from that I agree with Enjoyingmycoffee. It's bizarre that someone could be called judgmental for being appalled by a swastika tattoo.

matildasquared · 14/06/2014 18:55

We all know that swastikas used to mean other things but in Western Europe they now mean "nazi."

longestlurkerever · 14/06/2014 18:58

Even best case scenario and he deeply regrets a foolish mistake made when young, wouldn't he have it altered, or at least keep it covered?

LiberalLibertine · 14/06/2014 19:00

Sorry Matilda why the quote?

You find the swastika offensive? Yes, so do I, doesn't make it illegal, people have the right to tattoo what they wish onto their bodies wether you agree with it or not.

It's not pc gawn mad to believe in freedom.

squoosh · 14/06/2014 19:00

I used to have a postman that creeped the bejesus out of me. He had such a dark aura (man). He didn't have any visible swastika tattoos but I could imagine him making lampshades from people's skin.

Obviously I didn't raise my concerns with Royal Mail!

ICanHearYou · 14/06/2014 19:03

My postman is amazing, he defended my honour last week, what a champ!

Andrewofgg · 14/06/2014 19:04

The Nazi swastika had the arms bent clockwise. The Indian symbol has them bent anti-clockwise.

The swastika, if it is a swastika, is a concern, but he may have got it done in much younger days and now regret it.

The rest is just prejudice. Preferring people in your own image, in your comfort zone. If he says anything to you or does anything you see which justifies a complaint, complain, until then you have nothing to complain about.

matildasquared · 14/06/2014 19:04

Yes he has the freedom to wear his tattoo (thanks to lefties) but I also have the freedom to not have some dude wearing an "I hate Jews" sign coming up to my house every day and being paid to perform a public service.

Too bad, Swastika Guy, go find a different job.

Writerwannabe83 · 14/06/2014 19:05

You have opened the door to him 3 times and apparently he has scars all over his face??

Was he wearing a balaclava the 3 times you opened the door to him that hid these rumoured scars??? I'm guessing not though seeing as you've seen his black eyes....

Hmm
Andrewofgg · 14/06/2014 19:07

No matildasquared you don't have that "right". As long as he does his job and does not act improperly he can't be dismissed because of his appearance.

longestlurkerever · 14/06/2014 19:08

People don't really have the right to tattoo anything they like on their bodies without consequence or judgment though do they? I wouldn't employ anyone who turned up for interview with a swastika tattoo, and no employment court in the land would overturn that decision. Tolerance doesn't have to extend to tolerating people spouting hate. In fact there are laws against it. Not sure having a tattoo by itself would be inciting racial hatred but it is not far off.

pinkyredrose · 14/06/2014 19:08

OP was it definitely a Nazi swastika tattoo? If so YANBU. If not YABU.

Animation · 14/06/2014 19:09

"You find the swastika offensive? Yes, so do I, doesn't make it illegal,"

But it would make me wary of the guy, and think there goes a dubious character to be careful and watchful of, through my net curtains, when he walks up my drive.

pinkyredrose · 14/06/2014 19:09

I meant if it was any other type of swastika YABU.

Rollergirl1 · 14/06/2014 19:09

Writer: I opened the door to him, he handed me something and that was it. Probably took about 5 seconds. I noticed the black eyes as it was hard not to. DH actually stood and talked to him.

To be perfectly honest I couldn't give two hoots whether people believe me or not.

OP posts:
Rollergirl1 · 14/06/2014 19:11

pinky: I don't know as it was DH that saw it. I have no reason to think he was embellishing or lying about it.

OP posts:
matildasquared · 14/06/2014 19:11

No matildasquared you don't have that "right". As long as he does his job and does not act improperly he can't be dismissed because of his appearance.

100% wrong, thankfully. Go look up the law and let me know if any questions.

ShatnersBassoon · 14/06/2014 19:13

Do you want to know if there's something you could/should do to change the situation?
