AIBU to have wanted to bring my BIL's dog to Vet

My sister & brother in law have a dog that was hit yesterday by a car as she walked alongside the kids to the bus stop on their way to school. They live in the country and they were coming around a bend when in my niece's words the driver was "flying" and she hit the dog. The dog was knocked down but managed to get up and hobbled back home. My niece came running back home to tell my sister what happened.
My sister said to her husband that she would take the dog to the vet and his response was "let her rest and if she doesn't heal herself then you know what I will do". That would be him shooting the dog. He said he did not want vet bills.
So I went out today to see the dog and the poor thing cant put her hind leg down. I felt so bad for her and said to my sister "put her in my car and I will bring her down to the vet". She told me no because I would be interfering with my BIL's dog. I said I am not asking for the money and I would pay the vet myself. She refused saying it would cause a fight. I am totally disgusted with them for not getting the dog looked at. So am I being unreasonable for saying I wanted to take the dog to the vet?

No yanbu for wanting to help but yanbu for not just scooping the poor thing up and taking it to the vet anyway.

I wouldn't give a monkey's arse about my bil in the circumstances. Poor dog.

YANBU. If you don't feel able to take action yourself then phone RSpCa. I think they may take action if they are withholding necessary medical treatment

Theincidental · 10/06/2014 20:23

Sorry you were very unreasonable not to just take the dog. Please go back and get it before he shoots it.

JessicaFletcher2014 · 10/06/2014 20:24

I couldn't take the dog because she had her in the utility and she was blocking the entrance. I was so upset then that I left.

RSPCA. Ive reported people myself before. He cannot be allowed to let the dog suffer and you should not cover for him.

JessicaFletcher2014 · 10/06/2014 20:25

He said he would shoot the dog if she was permanently disabled. So I am hoping that the poor thing will heal.

Definitely RSPCA. It is a criminal offence to not seek veterinary treatment for a knowingly injured animal

He is a wanker and should be reported to the RSPCA.

FunnyFoot · 10/06/2014 20:31

Call the RSPCA OP. People like BIL should not be allowed to keep animals and I bloody well hope he is not a live stock farmer!

Itsfab · 10/06/2014 20:31

I would be reporting them now.

If the dog is in pain that is unforgivable. If they shoot it then that is horrible too.

You can not stand by and let them neglect the dog like this.

Gileswithachainsaw · 10/06/2014 20:31

:( poor dog. He doesn't deserve her!! Report him ASAP

Writerwannabe83 · 10/06/2014 20:32

That poor, poor dog - there's absolutely no excuse for what they are doing. What disgusting people to think that this is ok.

Sometimes I can't believe the cruel nature of some people and their regard to animals - it's just vile.

Your BIL sounds horrendous but your sister is no better as she is allowing it to happen. I wouldn't give a shit about any arguments, I would either be going back and grabbing the dog or calling the RSPCA. What they are doing is so wrong.

JessicaFletcher2014 · 10/06/2014 20:34

Yes she definitely seemed to be afraid of him if I took the dog. She didn't want to tell me when it happened because she was afraid I would report him.

This happened 36 hours ago and 12 hours after it happened. Why? The poor dog is probably dead or in pain now and you could have done something about it since its pathetic owners couldn't be arsed.

Idontseeanyicegiants · 10/06/2014 20:35

Report them to the RSPCA. However what your Sister said sounds worrying. What is your BIL like in general? Is she safe? She does sound scared of his reaction.

Itsfab · 10/06/2014 20:36

The BIL, the sister AND the op are all as bad as each other. All of them know the dog is suffering and they are putting money or relationships before the defenceless animal.

JessicaFletcher2014 · 10/06/2014 20:37

He is a farmer. I told her she was no better. But of course he is good to the livestock because they are worth money to him. I am texting her now asking her to do something about it. Its unfortunate I have 2 dogs myself & a small baby so I am not in a position to take the dog.

Go and get the dog! Sod what your DS & BIL say! You'll never forgive yourself if you knowingly let the poor thing suffer any longer. And while you're at it report them!!!!

SunshineAndShadows · 10/06/2014 20:39

If the dog is not putting the leg down, she likely has a broken bone or severely torn ligaments. This is exceuciatingly painful. You sister and Bil are acting illegally by not seeking immediate veterinary attention under the Animal Welfare Act of 2006.
You're in a really tough position but you need to call the RSPCA or convince your sister to take the dog to the vet. She needs to think about what she's reaching her children in terms of standing up for those unable to defend themselves, and taking responsibility.

JessicaFletcher2014 · 10/06/2014 20:40

Well thank you for saying I am as bad. I couldn't forcibly move her to take the dog while holding my baby. Short of breaking into their house and stealing the dog I am trying to get her to bring the dog.

MagpieMama · 10/06/2014 20:40

That's awful Sad
Please do whatever you can to get that poor creature out of there and to the vet. Sounds like your sister and her kids should get out too. What a horrid man your BIL is!

Gileswithachainsaw · 10/06/2014 20:41

Don't text!! You will alert ten to the fact that your thinking if taking action. Go get her!!

Take a muzzle though because a dog in pain may snap poor baby. Put something soft and comfy on the car seat and you will need to restrain her in the car some how, think you can shut the leash in the door.

Go get that dog some treatment!! Or at least out Ing her out if her misery :(

Itsfab · 10/06/2014 20:41

You don't have to go and get the dog . You ring the vet and tell them about it and they can advise who CAN go and get the poor thing.
