Smoking

I'm 36 and have been being treated for breast cancer for the past 9 months. I was diagnosed when DC3 was 8 weeks.
I've had 6 months of chemo, a bilateral mastectomy and now I'm doing the radiotherapy bit. AIBU not to want to walk through clouds of smoke at the entrance to the oncology centre?
I get that people are addicted. I've smoked myself and both parents do. It's just that I feel really pissed off when I see both staff and patients puffing away.
I was going to get cancer anyway - I have the BRCA2 gene, but these people don't have to get it. I just want to shake them.

Perhaps you should all save your ire for big tobacco.

FiftyShadesOfGreen4205 · 04/06/2014 21:56

My objection was to the tone of posts denegrating smokers and suggesting they deserve to die or are weak minded because of their actions.

Smoking outside a hospital is not acceptable. So the hospital can ban it, many already have.

logicalscientist · 04/06/2014 21:57

Not sure what your reference to Darwin is about fiftyshades? His paper "survival of the fittest" - hardly an arguement for smoking?

Grumpyrealist77 · 04/06/2014 21:58

Darwin saw two little finches.
One busily built a nest and feathered it. Then layed some eggs and sat on them.
The other puffed away all day on a 20 pack of cigarillos. It died.
The end.
My concept of Darwinism. Probably skewed.

logicalscientist · 04/06/2014 21:58

Our hospital has banned it. Doesn't stop ignorant smokers puffing away

slithytove · 04/06/2014 22:01

For the millionth time, just because lots of other things are bad, that doesn't mean smoking is justified for those who hate it.

Drinking has nothing to do with smoking.

I don't say to myself, oh, some prat got drunk last night and beat up another person, so really this selfish person blowing smoke at me isn't that bad.

That's not how life works. GBH is still bad even though murder exists.

And I can't think of any vices I have which negatively impact on other people. It's not that hard to not be violent, or to smoke only around people who don't mind it, or to not break the law.

logicalscientist · 04/06/2014 22:01

I spend my day dissecting cancerous tissue. Only to be hit with a wall of cancer inducing smoke... What tone should I have fiftyshades?

Grumpyrealist77 · 04/06/2014 22:03

Chuffingly well said!!

paxtecum · 04/06/2014 22:03

Logical: How can ALL cigarette smoke cause cancer?

My Mum smoked for 70 years and didn't have cancer.
But lots of men died very prematurely of cancer in my home town where they worked in the petro chemical industries.

BTW I don't smoke and don't like second hand smoke.

FiftyShadesOfGreen4205 · 04/06/2014 22:03

Have whatever tone you like.

slithytove · 04/06/2014 22:04

Smoking, drinking, and driving are all perfectly acceptable choices.

They only become unacceptable when the smoking affects others health because people are too selfish to do it elsewhere. Or when people get do drunk they allow themselves to lose control (which really the booze has very little to do with). A driver following the Highway Code is fine, a driver texting (or smoking or drinking! ) is not.

Do you see the difference? Make individual choices, but don't let them negatively impact upon others.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 04/06/2014 22:06

Gosh, so many people deflecting away. I don't judge smokers. I am far from a perfect person. I do judge lazy smokers who refuse to walk a bit further away from a hospital entrance. How is smoking by a hospital doorway defensible?!

logicalscientist · 04/06/2014 22:08

paxtecum ALL cigarette smoke contains carcinogens (cancer causing molecules). Obviously people's genetic make up plays a factor in resistance. However, before you chime in inspace, I don't think I should rely on my genetic make up to protect me when I leave work.

Grumpyrealist77 · 04/06/2014 22:09

candy the inconsiderate smoker defenders just. cant. get. how smoking in hospital doorways is attackable...

logicalscientist · 04/06/2014 22:09

Hit the nail on the head candycoated

Sallystyle · 04/06/2014 22:14

It makes me laugh how smokers are so often called dirty bastards, scum etc on here but it is celebrated and encouraged if you drink a few glasses of wine Hmm drunk posting gets a lot of laughs around here.

And before anyone says it is different because of the dangers of second hand smoke, well, I have seen smokers who aren't smoking around doorways etc still having these names thrown at them.

I quit two years ago and vape instead so I am no longer a smoker, but I despise how some treat smokers.

And yes, I worry more about car fumes then walking past some smoke for a few seconds every now and then.

OP, I am sorry that you are going through such an awful time. All the best to you :thanks

Sallystyle · 04/06/2014 22:15

than not then*

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 04/06/2014 22:16

I'm not defending smoking in hospital doorways, for the millionth time. I would be quite happy for there to be smoking shelters well away from entrances. I don't smoke. By the way, all car exhaust fumes contain carcinogens as well. Why aren't you screaming about your right not to breathe those logical?

logicalscientist · 04/06/2014 22:16

It may be time to time for you, but for.me, and hundreds of other hospital or regular patients, it is a several times a day occurance.

logicalscientist · 04/06/2014 22:19

Because I'm logical inspace. I don't suck a car exhaust

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 04/06/2014 22:21

Logical you are breathing in exhaust fumes every time you walk down a street. Have you not heard of pollution in towns?

Grumpyrealist77 · 04/06/2014 22:23

Logical is a chuffing scientist Inspace!!!!
You are not an astronaut! Of course she has heard of pollution!

Grumpyrealist77 · 04/06/2014 22:25

*Or he?! oops

candycoatedwaterdrops · 04/06/2014 22:26

I'm not screaming. Confused Why so aggressive?! I am not worried carcinogens. I just think I have a right to walk into a hospital and be able to breathe comfortably as I walk through. (I have a condition that means expanding my lungs fully is difficult and painful.)

logicalscientist · 04/06/2014 22:26

Over 100,000 UK people die from smoking related illnesses, and more from second hand smoke. 13,000 die from pollution. I'll say it AGAIN - PERSPECTIVE.
