Smoking

I'm 36 and have been being treated for breast cancer for the past 9 months. I was diagnosed when DC3 was 8 weeks.
I've had 6 months of chemo, a bilateral mastectomy and now I'm doing the radiotherapy bit. AIBU not to want to walk through clouds of smoke at the entrance to the oncology centre?
I get that people are addicted. I've smoked myself and both parents do. It's just that I feel really pissed off when I see both staff and patients puffing away.
I was going to get cancer anyway - I have the BRCA2 gene, but these people don't have to get it. I just want to shake them.

I will be tolerant of smokers if they show the basic manners not to stand at the doors of A and E smoking. Call me selfish but when my child is having an asthma attack I would rather he didn't get a lungful of smoke

logicalscientist · 04/06/2014 21:16

Anyone that chooses to do this to their body is incredibly stupid. Anyone that inflicts this on others is incredibly selfish.

Smoking
InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 04/06/2014 21:18

So I take it you're perfect with no bad habits or vices then logical?

logicalscientist · 04/06/2014 21:20

Non that I actively seek to kill others with.

logicalscientist · 04/06/2014 21:21

Or perhaps I should "tolerate" black cancerous lungs?

Grumpyrealist77 · 04/06/2014 21:24

Of course, logical throws whisky in little babies faces!!!!
How absurd!!!
I luuuurve doughnuts but I dont spit crumbs up peoples nostrils at hospital doorways....

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 04/06/2014 21:25

For goodness sake. So now smokers are 'actively seeking to kill others'?
Do wind your neck in

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 04/06/2014 21:27

So no other vices or behaviours affect anyone else, ever, then Grumpy?

slithytove · 04/06/2014 21:27

I don't smoke, I don't drink other than the odd single glass of wine when I'm neither pregnant or breast feeding. I am slightly overweight however that is the relic of three kids in quick succession rather than overeating.

I do bite my nails, I do stay up far too late sometimes, and I have a sneaky liking for Burger King. However, to my knowledge none of these habits negatively impact on someone else's health.

I do drive a car yes, so perhaps that gives others the right to blow smoke in my face and that of my newborn.

I can't think of many (legal) activities which directly impact on the health of other people the way smoking does.

slithytove · 04/06/2014 21:30

Maybe if there was less tolerance of smoking, it would be easier to remove it to where it bothers other people less.

I don't see that a smoker enjoys their cigarette more if inflicting it on non-smokers, therefore there is no need for it.

logicalscientist · 04/06/2014 21:30

Lol grumpy! What vices are you referring to inspace? I can't think of any legal ones. Btw I simply pointing out the flaw in your argument and trying to give you some reasonable perspective on a subject that has life threatening implications to those affected

Grumpyrealist77 · 04/06/2014 21:31

For sure Inspace, Drunks on a park bench are inconsiderate. No one else goes to a park to get blottoed...
BUT, hundreds of drunks in a pub can't be moaned at because theyre using the pub for what it's designed for.
Hospitals are not designed for smokers to blow smoke into air that others have to walk through...

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 04/06/2014 21:32

Well bully for you Slithy. Never mind that our drinking culture causes numerous fights, stabbings, beatings, or that our car culture kills hundreds of children a year, not to mention the devastation to others from drug use.
No. It's only smoking that affects anyone else Hmm

Grumpyrealist77 · 04/06/2014 21:35

AND I voted Lib Dem at the last election! Fucking mental, I know...

logicalscientist · 04/06/2014 21:39

Drinking culture... You mean the smokers that hang around outside clubs smoking and causing fights? I guess you would know inspace

Grumpyrealist77 · 04/06/2014 21:39

And we regularly see smokers beating crap out of each other at hospital doorways...
Your point is what exactly?
None of us like drunken fighting but u seem to support inconsiderate smokers...

FiftyShadesOfGreen4205 · 04/06/2014 21:40

No one smokes because they want to, they smoke because they have to. Nicotine is extremely addictive and readily available.

It's a terrible thing, and it holds people back financially, physically and emotionally. Most people become hooked when they are children and don't know any better.

I lost my father to a smoking related illness. I was a teenager. Therefore, the comment up thread about Darwinism I find absolutely fucking callously grotesque as well as embarrassingly ignorant of natural selection.

Yes, people smoke and they will as long as you can buy tobacco.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 04/06/2014 21:42

I'm saying that most people drink alcohol, and also drive cars, and both of those perfectly legal activities result in many deaths, disfigurements and all-round carnage. But that's fine is it?

logicalscientist · 04/06/2014 21:46

Smoking is a choice. Medically nicotine withdrawal symptoms last from 3 days to 3 weeks. After that period it is simply mind over matter..so essentially only the weak willed/weak minded continue with a deadly habit

Grumpyrealist77 · 04/06/2014 21:46

No one smokes because they want to...
My deepest sympathies re your father, BUT, WOAH!
Smokers DO want to...
You don't hear every smoker saying, 'I know, I hate it, its awful,' draaaag, 'Quick, take it off me, chop me hands off!
It IS an addiction, but I know soooooo many people who HAVE given up.
It's a mugs game...
You need to tolerate other peoples opinions re Darwinism.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 04/06/2014 21:47

So is drinking a choice. So is driving a car.

FiftyShadesOfGreen4205 · 04/06/2014 21:50

How about tolerating my opinions about people who don't really understand the basic theories of Darwin.

Smoking is addictive. Get your head around that fact. Most smokers would like to quit. Many don't for various reasons.

Grumpyrealist77 · 04/06/2014 21:50

Again Inspace no one is spitting ale into your mouth as you walk through the hospital doors.
Keep it relative to the inconsiderate smokers.
No more wandering off topic. No more. It's VERY Tory-like...

logicalscientist · 04/06/2014 21:51

The vast majority of people that have a drink or drive a car do not cause death. ALL CIGARETTE SMOKE causes cancer in the user and/or others. GET SOME PERSPECTIVE inspace

Grumpyrealist77 · 04/06/2014 21:52

I'm confused fiftyshades, are you with us or against us even considering your tragic cigarette related family loss...?
Smoking in hospital doorways, good or bad?
