AIBU to have found childbirth unbearably agonising?

Just that. I had an elective section with ds2 because of it. And yet I have friends and read on here of people who "did it naturally" or "just had a bit of gas and air at the end".

Why was childbirth so awfully painful for me?

Because you're an individual with your own pain threshold

Mines is very low, if I stub my toe I cry for hours as it's agony to me Grin

Salmotrutta · 27/05/2014 19:38

We all have different experiences so YANBU.

BobTheFly · 27/05/2014 19:38

Surely some people just have a higher pain threshold?

Yika · 27/05/2014 19:40

Childbirth is painful. In the country where I live, about 70 percent of women have an epidural. I don't understand why this isn't the case everywhere!

Mine was hell too. I was crying with pain after couple of hours of contractions. Whole thing lasted over 30 hiurs. Bloody awful! Amazed and jealous of others' better experiences! YANBU

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 27/05/2014 19:42

It was excruciating. In fact, beyond excruciating. YANBU.

Ohwhatsoccuring · 27/05/2014 19:42

My friend once said to me that women who scream during labour are drama queens.
Well I flipping screamed the place down both times and will probably do the same with my 3rd, so I guess that must sum me up eh.

yanbu im pretty sure judging by the shrieks and yells of PAINKILLERS NOW OR FUCKING KILL ME some people lie Grin

DragonMamma · 27/05/2014 19:42

YANBU

I did both of mine with a whiff of gas, it was sodding agony but once I got In The Zone it hurt less. I'm a known wimp who hates having waxes.

Similarly I've known women with high pain thresholds who have been begging for an epidural at 3cms.

It's all relative and how things go on the day I think.

HemlockStarglimmer · 27/05/2014 19:43

If I hadn't had such a quick labour I really don't know how I would have coped. I am a total wuss, with a low pain threshold. Gas and air did nothing and the jab in the bum (diamorphine I think) presumably helped. Still hurt like a mofo!

Caff2 · 27/05/2014 19:43

Some people must be well hard. DS 1 is 14 in August - I haven't forgotten and at my first appointment with midwife for DS2 ( 2 in July) I asked about referral for section!

wobblyweebles · 27/05/2014 19:44

I don't really think it's to do with pain threshold TBH. I don't have a high pain threshold but I also didn't find childbirth all that painful.

CrohnicallyHungry · 27/05/2014 19:44

I think the position of baby plays a part too. DD was breech and well and truly stuck. Early labour was agonising. I guess it was my body's way of saying 'something's not right here'.

CheshireDing · 27/05/2014 19:44

Same as an injury i guess - same op/injury but some people are up and about quickly and others are in bed for weeks.

Mine were hb's but we did lots of preparation, we have plenty of friends who didnt find it so easy though too (bit like maths)! [Grin]

Caff2 · 27/05/2014 19:45

Glad to hear I'm not the only one! x

HumphreyCobbler · 27/05/2014 19:46

see, I don't necessarily buy the high/low pain threshold. I just think it sometimes actually does hurt more! It depends on so many variables, position of baby, shape of woman, size of baby, amount of water, how relaxed or tense someone is etc.

MTWTFSS · 27/05/2014 19:46

YANBU!!!

  1. Babies are in different positions which can affect the amount of pain one feels
  2. Humans have different pain thresholds which also affects the amount of pain felt.
stargirl1701 · 27/05/2014 19:48

I think it is about the baby's position. Which, to me, is down to luck. I planned an epidural but I was 8cm when I arrived at the midwife unit. It wasn't painful just a strong sensation of pressure.

DC2 is due Aug. I know it will not be the same!

theeternalstudent · 27/05/2014 19:48

I don't think it's just as simple as pain threshold. It's about the position of the baby, pregnancy, how long your labour lasts (50hrs for me, I was exhausted), environment, expectations, support and so on.

Must admit that I thought it would be easier than it was and that I get mighty pissed off with my hypno-birthing friend and very evangelical about it. Just because she had a 7 hr labour with no medical interventions and drugs doesn't mean that it's all ways possible for others to have this and that they have done anything wrong if they don't manage this.

purplemurple1 · 27/05/2014 19:49

Is it really pain thresholds - I always thought it just is more painful / more difficult for some women's body's to get the baby out for various reasons dependent on their body and the babies body - position, size, muscle tone etc

WilsonFrickett · 27/05/2014 19:49

There are so many variables and pain threshold is only one of them. Baby position, how big the baby is, how the build up has been - quick labours are generally more painful as the oxywhasit/endorphins haven't had a chance to build up, that's why inductions can be a nightmare.

I also agree with a pp - given the howls of complete anguish that were ricocheting round the labour ward, people either lie about the pain or forget.

Mine was horrendous btw. And indeed one of the main reasons why there's only one DC running around just now when he should be in the bath

Bowlersarm · 27/05/2014 19:50

YANBU.

Awful experience. Can't believe I went through it three times.

natwebb79 · 27/05/2014 19:51

I really think it must be luck of the draw. I'm the kind of person who causes high drama if I so much I stub my toe. I also somehow managed a 20 hour labour and birth using nothing but the breathing techniques I'd learnt at yoga and a birthing pool. I can assure you that it really must hurt more for some people than others because I'm usually a fecking wimp! Grin
