Im in potty training hell and Im wondering if I should just quit for a few more months.

Started off great, now (day 4) hes having accidents and holding on to his poo.

He is 3 years 8 days old.

onestepbeyond · 27/05/2014 14:56

2.5yrs and girl.

hellsbellsmelons · 27/05/2014 14:58

2 yrs 4 mths - a girl.
Blackmail Rewards with sweets did it for me.

YellowStripe · 27/05/2014 14:59

With 3 DDs it was through the summer closest to their 3rd birthday. With DGS, I think he was 3.5 failing memory

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 27/05/2014 14:59

2.5 years, all three boys.

Suefla62 · 27/05/2014 14:59

Both 18 months and girls.

Suefla62 · 27/05/2014 15:00

Forgot To say I used bribery too.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/05/2014 15:00

DD is 3.5 and still hasn't mastered poo. She has been really consistent with wee since just pre-3.

AntinousWild · 27/05/2014 15:02

Dd was 17 months. Ds was well over 2 though. No training with either, they decided for themselves.

APlaceInTheWinter · 27/05/2014 15:02

Just before his third birthday.

Fakebook · 27/05/2014 15:03

3 years 2 days. Took us a day or two. She wasn't dry at night until 3 years and 9 months.

MumofWombat · 27/05/2014 15:03

I'm in that hell as well.
DS is 3.1, he hates the potty, has to be bribed to go on the toilet, wees & poos if we put him on it but he's only asked to go 3 times ever.
He's in pants at home but pull ups out and about.
Every other child in my mothers group has 'got it', someone please reassure me that he will too!

marmitelover · 27/05/2014 15:05

Day 4 I would stick with it if I were you! DS was done on wees after about 5 days (although took weeks to day he needed to go - we just did wee before going out/food etc). Poo took about a month. He was 2.5

crazykat · 27/05/2014 15:05

Two girls and one boy. Oldest two were just over 3, dd2 was 3 years 5 months. They weren't ready until then and I saw no point in forcing the issue and dealing with multiple accidents every day. They were using the toilet with only a handful of accidents in the first week and none after that, they were also able to hold on for a minute rather than needing to go right that second. Dd2 was dry day and night within two weeks, dd1 and ds1 within a month.

Some kids are ready sooner than others and some parents try to make them use the potty before the DCs are ready and spend all day cleaning up accidents. My friend used to boast how her dd was using the potty at just turned two, however she was still having at least two accidents per day at two and a half.

I prefer to leave my DCs till they're ready. I tried them all at about two and a half but they weren't ready so left it a few weeks and tried again. I found that they learned really quickly once they were ready and I plan to do the same with ds2.

gordyslovesheep · 27/05/2014 15:05

all around 3 - but I NEVER 'potty trained' them - I really dislike that idea

They told me they didn't want to wear nappies anymore - and didn't - we had maybe 23 accidents - but no stress at all

Nighttimes would have been about 4

EverythingsDozy · 27/05/2014 15:05

DD was 2 years 3 months and took less than 2 weeks to be reliably dry but poo took us a little longer. She would do it on the toilet but wouldn't realise if she was doing it in knickers. Eventually, we told her that poo that goes in the toilet goes on an adventure (but poo that goes in knickers doesn't!) and we made up a story about it going through the pipes and going to the beach. It seemed to do the trick!

gordyslovesheep · 27/05/2014 15:06

2/3 accidents ffs!

LindaMcCartneySausage · 27/05/2014 15:07

2yrs 4m and a boy

He was prob ready a couple of months earlier but I had DS2 when DS1 was 2 and couldn't face potty training while EBF a newborn.

dashoflime · 27/05/2014 15:08

Mine is coming up to 2- not started yet but thinking about it.
Will be watching this thread closely as not sure when to start.
Thinking it would be good to wait until 2.5 but this would put us into winter time and everything I've read suggests warm weather and outside time is best!
Waiting until next lot of warm weather would put us at 3- is that too late?
Plus am trying for another baby so that's another factor. Potty train before new arrival and risk regression if unsettled by new brother/sister? Or cope with 2 in nappies?
Bit daunted by the whole thing tbh

drinkingtea · 27/05/2014 15:09

I'd stop if you're getting nowhere.

Dd was 2.5 - no fuss, only ever hsd 1 accident (day dry)

DS1 was 2.9 - no fuss, maybe 3 accidents, night dry straight away too.

DS2 however is 3 years 1 month and hopeless - 2 trys have been disasters. Am going to try in an "all or nothing" way in the summer holidays, and we'll just stay in the garden with him bare bottomed for weeks on end til he finally cracks it! :o

icecreamfloat · 27/05/2014 15:09

1yr 11mths for DS1 - well saying that, he knew when he needed to go and could/would use the potty well, but it was a good few months before he was 100% accident free.

2yrs 6 mths with DS2 - he would not even try before this. He wouldn't use a potty full stop and went straight on the toilet. Was dry at night & accident free within a month.

Was much easier with DS2 although it was later. We also went cold turkey with nappies and this seemed to work well.

HavannaSlife · 27/05/2014 15:09

22 months, 2.5 and 2.4. All boys, ds3 wouldn't wear anything on his bottom half until just before 3 and poo took a little longer, about 2.8

Marcipex · 27/05/2014 15:09

DS 17 months, it was his idea not to wear a nappy, no accidents at all.
DD 34 months, hard going, lots of accidents.

dashoflime · 27/05/2014 15:10

Aha, x post with LindaMcCartneySausage
Interesting- you decided to wait until the 2nd one was a bit bigger before potty training the first one.

TheUnburnt · 27/05/2014 15:12

DSD - 2.9, dd1 - 4.5, dd2 - 2.5.

Dragonlette · 27/05/2014 15:12

dd1 was about 2 years ish, I don't really remember.

Dd2 was 2years 1 month and decided for herself. I wasn't ready for it, I tried to encourage her back into nappies until it was a better time, but she was having none of it and just took her nappy off. She didn't have an accident until she was 3.
