Im in potty training hell and Im wondering if I should just quit for a few more months.

He is 3 years 8 days old.

Boy here

Nursery tried at around 2yrs 6/9mths - was POINTLESS - DS no where near ready.

Did it in a weekend when he turned 3 and I was lucky that he was dry at night a few weeks afterwards.

MrsKoala · 28/05/2014 09:21

This is really interesting. I am about to start with 20mo DS. He has told me when he is about to poo and goes behind the curtain for the last 6 months (he has usually only ever pooed at home too in his whole life - bar 2 occasions when a baby). He also now seems to be able to control his wee. He says 'wee' and stares hard at his weasel for a few seconds then pees on the floor so he can jump in it Confused Grin

However, i'm prepared to give up if it is hellish (but we have another baby coming in Sept so would be great if we could get it done early) and try later. But he does seem 'ready'. I wouldn't even attempt it if he wasn't demonstrating that he was ready.

MissCalamity · 28/05/2014 09:38

2.6 with DS.

I had 2 days off work combined with the the weekend & just went.for.it. I did attempt to try him on the potty just turned 2, and left it in the bathroom & pointed it out to him every bath time.

We did have a few issues with holding onto poo's, trip to the docs & lots of.encouragement finally got it moving (so to speak!)

Within the next month he was also dry at night & never had an accident although he wakes us up everything he needs the toilet at night, completely bypassing the bathroom on the way to our room, small sacrifices I suppose!

HaveHadIt4 · 28/05/2014 09:41

How did you get your child(ren) dry at night? By waking them up or letting them get on with it? My DD now 4 has been day dry since 20 months. I was told to let her get on with it and she'll be dry at night on her own. Years later, we are still on it. Should I wake up her up several times to go at night till she masters it or just let her be?

TheScience · 28/05/2014 09:49

Once DS was dry in the day, we just told him no more nappies at night, put a potty in his room and put disposable bedmats on his bed/put him to bed in just a t-shirt.

First few nights he wet the bed, then he started waking himself up at night for a wee, then within a couple of weeks he just slept through.

TheScience · 28/05/2014 09:50

Does she wet the bed every night still HaveHad?

HaveHadIt4 · 28/05/2014 09:53

She does. Have tried everything, reward charts, bribes of days out to lovely places, everything.

TheScience · 28/05/2014 09:55

I don't think it is something they can consciously control - if she's not even waking when she starts to wet herself then she really isn't ready. Some children don't mature to hold wee overnight until about 7.

GoblinLittleOwl · 28/05/2014 09:58

Son 2, and a half; daughter 22 months; both in summer months, took about a fortnight, very few accidents or issues.

SqutterNutBaush · 28/05/2014 09:59

DS was 3yr 8mo but tbh he would have stayed in nappies had I not just refused to use them during the day. He never used the potty and went straight to the toilet (with a little seat) and was totally sorted day and night within 10 days so he was ready but needed a push I think.

drinkingtea · 28/05/2014 09:59

Havehad some kids just don't wake up - 4 is actually still relatively early to be night dry, and I don't think its always connected to whether they were day dry early (my dd was day dry at 2.5 but not night dry til 3.4, my ds1 was day and night dry from day 1 - but at 2.9, and has still never wet the bed 4 years on).

Friends with heavy sleepers seem to have found them night dry a lot later - 5 or 6 often (mine are all light sleepers, to the degree that if you tip-toe into their rooms to check on the they almost always spring fully awake). A doctor won't consider bed wetting a problem before age 7.

LoblollyBoy · 28/05/2014 10:01

My dd just was dry at night, we didn't need to do anything Confused

HaveHadIt4 · 28/05/2014 10:04

Oh dear! She was the first of all her friends to be clean and dry during the day and now she's the last to be dry. In the beginning, she used to wake us up when she needed the toilet, maybe I should have taken her out of pull ups then but I was kind of waiting for total dryness coupled with advice from people saying she'll want out of it herself. I've told her to wake me up now so we can go together(even though she passes the toilet on her way to wake me up). She's only managed to do it once successfully last week. So was wondering if I pester her hourly for at least a week, she'll get fed up and just go by herself so she can sleep peacefully.

HaveHadIt4 · 28/05/2014 10:09

Thanks TheScience and drinkingtea will give it more time

TheScience · 28/05/2014 10:10

Is she still in pull-ups at night? I would take her out of them for a week, put a pampers bedmat on the bed and no pyjama bottoms so minimal clean up and see if she wakes herself up. If no luck after a week put her back in pull-ups and leave it a while.

Elfhame · 28/05/2014 10:14

DD 2.5 after 2 weeks training

DS 4 after 2 years training ( on and off)

pianodoodle · 28/05/2014 10:15

Little girl turns 3 next month. Still no interest although has had a few dry nappies in the mornings so that's a good sign isn't it?

She's had a few goes sitting on the loo and liked it but didn't actually do anything Grin

IsSpringSprangedYet · 28/05/2014 10:15

Eldest two were nearly 4, next one was 2.5 after seeing the older two doing it. Youngest is 16 months, so I haven't tried. And all boys.

I started with star charts with DS 1 and 2, but they both lost their excitement after a few stars. DS3 seemed quite happy just doing it. Fortunately it was all done and dusted in a week, although night times are a bit wobbly still.

HaveHadIt4 · 28/05/2014 10:18

TheScience yes, she still is. Have bought waterproof mattress cover AND bed mat so will try without the pyjamas bottom and sheets. 8 months pg with bad spd so making up beds is killing me at the moment. Hope she gets the message. Also think the bedmats are so absorbent that she hardly felt wet and so slept on. Maybe without bottoms would make a difference.

WonderingAllowed · 28/05/2014 10:22

Two of mine were dry at night more or less immediately - night time pull ups dry within a few days.

The other two were around 7/8 before they were consistently dry.

thegreylady · 28/05/2014 10:31

Dd was 22 months Ds was 2.2 but not reliable at night till he was 6.
Dgs1 was 2.5 but still having occasional wet beds at 7. Dgs2 was 23 months and has never had wet pants or a wet bed. He is 5.

Bunnyjo · 28/05/2014 10:35

OP - our DS's are the same age, almost to the day!

My DS - 3yr 11days old - will happily use a potty all day in the house. Sadly, everything goes belly up when we put pants and trousers on him! I am at university and we've not really tried in earnest as I simply haven't had the time. However, I have my last exam next week - so I'll be in full-on potty training mode after that!

I was very lucky with DD; she was day and night dry within a fortnight at 2.5 so I'm quite sure it's Karma that DS is a bit more reluctant...

CaptWingoBings · 30/05/2014 06:46

DC1, girl, was potty trained at 2 years & a few weeks - started the day after her second birthday. She was dry night & day immediately.

DC2, girl, was potty trained at 2 year & 5 months, took a few days. Now nearly 3 and still wet at night but dry at nap times.

Fizzyplonk · 30/05/2014 07:47

2 1/2 tried in the summer- started really well. Then started holding wees and poos as wanted to play.

2 years 11months
Not interested. Bought new larger potty so could sit more comfortably and a sticker chart to earn towards a digger toy.
Totally trained in a few days.
Dry at night a week later as he asked not to have nappies on (I was proud but learnt on here that it's hormone related!)

bellybuttonfairy · 30/05/2014 08:00

Ive never 'potty trained', I think you might as well bypass that and go straight for the toilet.

Dd1 2 and a half
Dd2. 2 years and 3 months (she decided herself)
Ds1 2 yrs and 5 months

They always see me/dh on using the toilet and that we are a big girl/boy so thats why we use it. They flush the chain for us. They see older sibling have praise for using loo.

Ive never made any of them sit on the loo. They just kind of decided to do it themselves.
