If you voted UKIP - what are you hoping will happen

..with all the immigrants who've come to the UK over the past few years?

Given that I suspect you think there are far too many here and that they are a major cause of our current housing and jobs shortage?

Just asking! :-)

We're 26th in the OECD tables, 12 'places behind Poland and only 2 above Latvia. Sweden might be further behind, but Ikea is possibly in a better place to comment on which country has a better quality of life!

Neverknowingly · 26/05/2014 20:09

Mrs Ruffalo did you read my comment where I said "I had a word with myself"? Or could you only manage a few words before your comprehension skills deserted you?

Viviennemary · 26/05/2014 20:12

Nothing should happen to the people who have come here legally. But Britain must get to grips with a sensible immigration policy for the future.

Second in Europe after Finland.

mumthetaxidriver · 26/05/2014 20:12

razzle

I imagine quite a lot of germans are in poland thogh

I'm not sure what the relevance of this is - I was just showing that there are UK citizens chosing to live all over Europe not just retiring in Spain for the sun.

icanneverremember · 26/05/2014 20:12

I voted for UKIP for 2 reasons:

  1. I want out of Europe. I work in an industry where their beurocracy is irrelevant yet restrictive and ultimately detrimental. I feel uncomfortable being governed by an authority which is (physically) so far removed.

  2. I think immigration needs to be addressed. There is no doubt that economical migrants are vital for our country but I feel uncomfortable with the apparent free for all. I feel that in democratic situations you can only really appraise with first hand experience. I have two personal experiences: One was a Polish woman who lived in Poland but repeatedly came over to this country purely for healthcare. Another was a Spanish friend who will be coming to the country for an undertermined length of time to get a job. Whilst I bear her no grudge for doing so (and I would probably do the same in her position) I do wonder if there will be a British person who will then suffer a detriment because that job could have been theirs.

I find it peculiar that the examples cited on the first page of this thread revolve around a British person supporting a family vs the ability of a migrant living alone to take NMW job - what has their ethnicitygot to do with it? The comparible would be the same if it were two British people applying for a jod, one with a family to support, one without. Maybe the government should focus on childcare and travel subsidies for those on NMW.

A short answer to the question of what now: I would never vote UKIP in a general election but I sincerely hope the government takes note of the above issues. I want there to be a referendum on staying in the EU.

icanneverremember · 26/05/2014 20:14

Ha - that should be economic migrants, not migrants who are frugal!! Grin

Lemiserableoldgimmer · 26/05/2014 20:15

Retropear may have read about UKIP's promise to increase the number of grammar schools and hence want them to get in.

Obviously she doesn't want her children to go to a secondary modern school - which UKIP would be introducing alongside grammar schools.

OP posts:
mumthetaxidriver · 26/05/2014 20:18

retro I thought this sounded rather unlikely - the second paragraph explains "The rankings include higher education as well as international school tests - which boosted the UK's position" The OECD one mentioned above is a far more realistic picture of our education unfortunately.

TheFairyCaravan · 26/05/2014 20:20

Retropear, sorry to burst your bubble, but even the politicians use the OECD tablets. Esther McVile was going on about the fact under the Tories the UK had gone up a couple of places on Question Time a couple of weeks ago.

Retropear · 26/05/2014 20:20

Hmmm don't think so,one definitely (she's adamant)maybe two or three of mine will be going to one of the very good alternative non grammar schools in our area.We are lucky and have lots of choice in our area as selection by house price isn't so hard to break through as it is in many other areas.

Retropear · 26/05/2014 20:23

Yes Pearson use the OECD data too.

ikeaismylocal · 26/05/2014 20:24

If the UK statistics also count the fantastic quality universities in the UK then I can well believe it, luckily my children will be entitled to study at any university with the Swedish government paying the university fees and giving a grant.

The statistics I have seen show a very sad picture of UK education, they were ranked 21st for numeracy and 19th for literacy in young adults behind the Czech republic, Estonia, Sweden and Poland. www.theguardian.com/education/2013/oct/08/england-young-people-league-table-basic-skills-oecd

Sweden more people leave school with the GCSE equivalent in English than leave school in England with an English GCSE, thatcan be described as nothing other than a huge failing on behalf of the English education system.

I'm not even overly focused on education statistics, Sweden doesn't do great but many studies show that children are happier than in the UK and all I want is for my child to be happy. My ds won't start school until he is 7, I do not see the point I'm putting children who are only just out of the toddler phase in classrooms and expecting them to learn to read and wright if it doesn't even make much of a difference.

TravellingToad · 26/05/2014 20:26

Nothing is going to happen to people already here. But I hope in the future immigration is dramatically reduced, like Aus, NZ and Canada and we only take in the immigrants who we genuinely NEED and want and who are useful and qualified in jobs that cant be fulfilled by British residents already here.

Retropear · 26/05/2014 20:26

Mum does higher education not matter?

Pearson use an amalgamation.

Pisa tests alone have been criticised.

ikeaismylocal · 26/05/2014 20:26

I would prefer to live in a country where more people leave school able to read and write than live in a country with amazing universities only accessible to the very bright or the very privileged.

Retropear · 26/05/2014 20:30

Ikea as I'm sure you must get aware no country is perfect and Sweden is no exception so not entirely sure what UK bashing brings to the party or your point.

You don't want to live in the UK, plenty do.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 26/05/2014 20:33

For the people who did vote for ukip how do you feel about their misogynistic and homophobic views? Flat rate tax which benefits the rich? Their views on disabled people and children with special needs and how they should be educated? Their complete ignorance of the issues our planet is facing regarding climate change?

I get that you feel strongly about Europe and unchecked immigration but fail to see how you can overlook the beliefs they hold.

ikeaismylocal · 26/05/2014 20:34

Best we'd should forget the anti racism protests in Sweden recently due to the increase of the far right too

Yes there is a vile far right party and there has been protests, many of which were very moving, crowds physically turning their backs on the politicians and church bells ringing out as a warning against far right politics ( something that hadn't been done since the 2nd world war) the Swedish democrats only gained 9.8% of the vote. I didn't say Sweden was great because it was free of racists, fascists or far right parties, I just want to have the choice to live where I want and I want other people to have that choice as well.

caruthers · 26/05/2014 20:34

IKEA can knock the UK because she has "other options".

Other options a great deal of people living in the UK don't have.

caruthers · 26/05/2014 20:36

Again.....

UKIP is a tool devised for exit from Europe.

The scaremongering that they will actually get into power is disingenuous.

ikeaismylocal · 26/05/2014 20:39

You don't want to live in the UK, plenty do.

Exactly! So I have left, as have 2.2 million other people, so lets not worry about the 2.3 million EU members living in the UK shall we, they can have our "spaces"

My point about the UK is that brits often think that the UK is so utterly fabulous and people are desperate to come and enjoy the rain, steal our fish and chips and take our jobs but in reality the UK is an ok country but not especially fabulous, surely the 2.2 million brits living in other EU countries is proof of this?

Retropear · 26/05/2014 20:41

Did you not read the thread. Many are retirees, many come back. The workers with visas could continue to work as workers all round the world do on working visas.

ikeaismylocal · 26/05/2014 20:48

Yes I did read the thread retro ( although if you feel my comprehension is lacking you can blame the English education system ;) ) I don't think it is relevant that the brits living are retired or working or if they eventually choose to cone back.

  • IKEA can knock the UK because she has "other options".

Other options a great deal of people living in the UK don't have.*

My "other options" were only ever options thanks to the EU. I wouldn't have been able to just move to a country and give things a try if I hadn't been an EU citizen. I want my dc to also have the same options.

mumthetaxidriver · 26/05/2014 20:51

Retro - of course higher education is important but I think its far more important to bring up overall education levels - currently aprox 50% of 16 yrs leave Yr 11 without achieving grade A-C in Maths & English.
