and apparently similar results across Europe.

Front Nationale have done particularly well in France. Guardian is reporting similar successes for far right parties in Greece and Denmark.

I am unnerved.

meddie HE IS tippd to take over from milliband as a contender?!

meddie · 26/05/2014 10:11

Thats not good news then. As you said, they may be hearing what people say, but they are definitely NOT listening. or choosing to ignore. I cant decide which is worse

Nancy66 · 26/05/2014 10:15

We've been here before (to a lesser extent) with the BNP. It's never reflective of a potential general election outcome.

curlyHedgehog · 26/05/2014 10:17

Democracy in action. Maybe if the privileged MP so had listened to us proles who struggle to get school places after mass immigration with minimal school building then we wouldn't be in this.situation.

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 10:20

Well I titled this thread as I saw the first region's results come in (NW?), open mouthed, and so it proved. It was a complete UKIP landslide last night.

I just want to make clear though that I, for one, was not and am not suggesting it will translate into the generals or anything else.

It's also a good lesson in why fashionable, idealistic lefties like Russell Brand who encourage people not to vote are morons.

This is what happens when 40% of the population can't be bothered to get off their arses and draw a X on a piece of paper.

shockinglybadteacher · 26/05/2014 10:21

unless the political class introduces some much needed accountability to the electorate as a matter of urgency.

This reminds me of Brecht's "The Solution" ("Die Losung" - there should be an umlaut over the O, but who the fuck knows how to do umlaut here? I can't even do links). In it, he asks if it wouldn't just be simpler to dissolve the people and elect another ;)

I don't think it's the electorate who need to be accountable or have accountability introduced to them. It's the politicos themselves who need to stop saying "Give us loads of money, watch politely while we piss it up the wall and don't EVER ASK US QUESTIONS. We're doing it all for you, you know."

By the way, that includes UKIP. I hope for an answer to my question if it's UKIP's policy to abstain or vote No in all EU parliamentary votes....

EffectiveCommunication · 26/05/2014 10:21

Nancy, I agree this will not be the same result in a GE. In the mean time in Europe where most of our big laws are made, look who is making the decisions for the next five years.

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 10:23

Actually Nancy I disagree - I think the non-voters and a large wedge of the UKIP voters are part of the same protest against the mainstream parties.

OP posts:
FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 10:24

And the point has been made, comparatively safely, in a Euro, rather than a General Election.

OP posts:
Nancy66 · 26/05/2014 10:27

Correction: 60% didn't vote - up to 70 in some parts of the country.

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 10:29

Low turn outs are hardly a new phenomenon in British politics Nancy

Miliband on TV now. He might have stuck his fingers in his ears and said not listening, not listening, not listening. He is just be so patronising. Dreadful man.

imavinalaugh · 26/05/2014 10:32

This just proves why the proles should not be allowed to vote as there is always the worry that they will vote ungood and we can't have that happening.

I believe only Guardian reading, north London intellectuals like myself should be allowed to vote as we know what is best for the country and for you and if you don't agree with me it is quite likely you are a racist nazi bigot.

Nancy66 · 26/05/2014 10:37

I'm not saying they're new but if a 'protest' vote allows a party you despise to seize some power then the protest has backfired somewhat hasn't it?

EffectiveCommunication · 26/05/2014 10:38

As much as I am not knee on Blair, I haven't been able to pay attention to what a Labour leader has said since him. I realised this is not good, I can't help it. I was so busy being distracted by the lock/drop jaw of Brown and the mouth of Miliband, I simply loose attention as a result and all I hear is blah blah blah. Blush

I am ok with listening to what Cameron says as long as his fingers are not on display.

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 10:39

@ there is always the worry that they will vote ungood

Always a worry when a party with a half-written manifesto acheive a landslide though imavin

LOL, UKIP are the party of the poor and downtrodden alright. Why, all their policies tell you how much they respect you (what policies, you whisper? Don't look at the man behind the curtain!) With UKIP, never again will you be forced to have workers' rights, or indeed human rights! They were totally upsetting you when you read in the Daily Mail that other people had them!

sigh There's an old-fashioned curse which just goes "May you have what you wish for". If you voted for UKIP, although I don't believe in ill-wishing, I'd be strongly tempted to say that to you.

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 10:42

Maybe Nancy but I'm not sure we can assume the voters who stayed at home were 'nice sensible people' who wouldn't have been tempted to make comparable protests or spoil ballots in largeish numbers had they been forced to the polls.

Effective I think you need to obtain yourself a sleepmask or similar Wink

oH MY GOD.

I have just seen Milliband on TV, still still still saying its nothing to do with EU!!!! That they have the solutions to the problems.

Head bang on desk......

Why do they all deny the problems, why do they choose to spin it away from EU.....why?

Rebecca2014 · 26/05/2014 10:44

The main parties have to listen but it seems unlikely because they are all saying "We are listening." But will they do anything about open door immigration? No! well people in UK will keep voting UKIP and people in France will keep voting NF. The general election will be a big shock unless one the parties does something, anything.

Rebecca2014 · 26/05/2014 10:45

I have just seen Milliband on TV, still still still saying its nothing to do with EU!!!! That they have the solutions to the problems.

This is why people vote UKIP.

RazzleDazzleEm · 26/05/2014 10:46

But will they do anything about open door immigration? No!

Apparently ukips RISE will now put pressure on Merkel to allow cameron to do more about it.

Its all about Germany and Merkel? and people are worried about farage wife?!

RazzleDazzleEm · 26/05/2014 10:47

rebecca we are northern life long generation back Labour supporters from Liverpool. Not any more, not since Blair.

Thank god, the frustration I feel as a non labour supporter is immense...I want them to come up with something!

The frustration I would feel If I was still labour....well...

FidelineandFumblin · 26/05/2014 10:49

Razzle people are worried about Mrs Farage? WTF? Which people?
