I forgot the cheering when the fox is killed? Where did you hear this? I've hunted with 5 different hunts, and although I tend to have quite fast horses which are at the front end of the field, I've never heard this. Maybe its a localised thing in some of the Leicestershire hunts? Do people really cheer? Don't the horses spook? How would you get near enough to hounds and the huntsman to see a kill, never mind made an audible cheer above the barking?

tbh if you are interested in helping foxes, you would probably be better campaigning against devastation of the green belt by new build housing estates or something, which destroy their natural habitat.

ChelsyHandy · 19/05/2014 21:07

Yes. Really Chelsy

Where?

cantbelievethisishppening · 19/05/2014 21:14

chelsy. Oh yes.....plenty of cheering from the hangers on as they peer through their binoculars from the sidelines. I didn't actually indicate who was doing the cheering in my post. You just assumed I was talking about the riders.

ThatBloodyWoman · 19/05/2014 21:16

Chelsy open your eyes!
Everywhere!

If you think differently you really need to associate more with people outside of your immediate hunting circle.

Which hunt is it that you hunt with?

I am wondering-since you hunt regularly, yet have only tried drag hunting once and didn't like it, what are you actually hunting when you go out?

ElephantGoesToot · 19/05/2014 21:25

No they don't Elephant! They are opportunist hunters which exhibit caching behaviour if they are not disturbed after a kill. When they get into a chicken coup they have a wonderful buffet laid out for them. Not knowing when they are likely to have that opportunity again they kill as many as they can. What they will do, if the corpses aren't cleaned up and the fox hasn't been scared away, is come back repeatedly (they can only carry one chicken at a time after all) and collect the birds, go back to their territory and bury them for later. This is basic fox behaviour, and it really is about time that people stopped believing (and spreading) the "foxes kill for fun" bullshit.

Not bullshit. Have friends with country places who have had this happen.
Not in the UK, though. Perhaps UK foxes are different then.

ChelsyHandy · 19/05/2014 21:27

I'm in the North, I switch about between several.

Christ, they must be a right lot of wierdos in some of those southern hunts. There are some very how can I put this, tough, hard people up here to do with the hunt. I wouldn't fancy being an anti and crossing them. They also organise the agricultural shows and basically act as a link in what is a very rural society.

I am wondering-since you hunt regularly, yet have only tried drag hunting once and didn't like it, what are you actually hunting when you go out?

Foxes. Not personally. That's the huntsman's job. Not the followers. You're not meant to be anywhere near the hounds on your horse once the hunt starts at all. Its drummed into people.

If you think differently you really need to associate more with people outside of your immediate hunting circle

I don't really have an immediate hunting circle, I'm not into it enough. Do you make a habit of telling people who they should socialise with? Don't you realise that comes across as quite odd? I just go along to educate my horse a few times a year, to whichever ones most convenient. I recognise a few people there occasionally. I'm too busy riding and jumping to think about all that stuff you say. As for the blood smearing - sorry, no way does that happen. That's ridiculous!

But its way more popular than before the "ban" - fields are massive up here now.

Mind you, if they would ban it for good, I would have an excuse not to do it and hence not to get so bloody cold!

On a more serious note, theres areas not covered by the hunt which are hill country, what alternative to a rogue fox would you suggest in such areas? Like my neighbour has lost so many lambs and is having to sit out each night in his field shelter to try and get a shot at it. Because I could imagine a mounted hunt and hounds could go a lot of places quad bikes and guns couldn't, at speed. Seems to me they could do with more hunts in some areas.

But hunting - really - of all the issues affecting the countryside, you have to obsess about this one small thing? Why?

cantbelievethisishppening · 19/05/2014 21:36

chelsy. Regardless, the opinion of the vast majority of the British public is very much against hunting. Thankfully, this will ensure repeal will never happen.

Pasithea · 19/05/2014 21:39

OP I think you should try your discussion on the Horse and Hound Forum . I think you will get more of the argument you are craving on there love.

5OBalesofHay · 19/05/2014 21:41

Oi Chelsy, don't diss us leicestershire hunts. I cab say categorically that the Quorn don't cheer at a kill. Piss ourselves when field master falls off though .Grin

I know, I don't think the hunts round here are bothered, as they are thriving. It does sound a bit sick, I agree, if you don't live in the countryside and aren't quite a tough sort of person who has had to deal with gory accidents involving animals.

But cheering at the killing of a fox? Sounds like a bunch of hooray henries, and generally that lot are now on the anti side and the hunters are mainly farmers, riders and people with ordinary jobs. That sounds so weird it makes me almost want to go along and see it. They're so morose up here they're like stealth killers. And that's just the guys on quad bikes. And smearing blood on people's faces - I saw that in a film once and even then I thought it was an antiquated practice resurrected for that film. You would be an absolute bloody laughing stock, surely?

As for my conscience - I see it thus - foxes in this country have a damned good life compared to the majority of animals raised for food, or even many pet dogs or cats, which are never allowed outside or get inadequate exercise. Particularly since their own natural predators have been removed by man.

I'd rather concentrate my activities on animal welfare issues which affect a large number of animals more adversely - in particular campaigning for more local slaughterhouses so as to end live transportation over long distances (and particularly to the continent), battery farming, pseudo-battery farming, and a ban on halal slaughter, as in Denmark. I also keep an eye open on my local areas and animal welfare and have intervened in the past so as to save 3 animals from cruel conditions and an uncertain future.

I did wonder. Definitely though? I was depicting this sort of Jilly Cooper crossed with a film set image in my mind. I mean, its one of the weirdest things I've ever heard, I'm trying to imagine it. I know you have massive hedges down there but apart from that I've never heard anything else about them.

5OBalesofHay · 19/05/2014 21:50

Are you vegan, OP?

ThatBloodyWoman · 19/05/2014 22:12

I am wondering why you think everyone opposed to the hunt is a 'townie' with no idea Chelsy !

You ask why I 'obsess' over this one thing.

Well, actually I don't.There are other things that concern me greatly.I don't know why you think they wouldn't!

As for the rogue fox issue.Last time that issue presented itself, the local gamekeeper set bait and shot it.

I'm not telling you who you should associate with. You seemed not to know where all the people opposed to hunting are.I suggested that if you broaden your circle you may find them.

5OBalesofHay · 19/05/2014 22:32

The only odd things about us Chelsy is that there are always ladies out side saddle, and they jump everything Shock

fledtoscotland · 19/05/2014 22:47

Go for it OP if you truely believe you will be aiding the cause of the fox. IME sabs are dangerous getting in the way so a horse is spooked and could land awkwardly. Their air horns scare the horses and they also get in the way of innocent hackers who just happen to be out for a ride.

If you honestly believe you will save the fox go for it. It's highly likely the fox will end up being trapped or shot by a farmer so you could then go and lobby against the farmers' rights to protect his livestock

ChelsyHandy · 19/05/2014 23:30

thatbloodywoman I am wondering why you think everyone opposed to the hunt is a 'townie' with no idea Chelsy !

Do I? That's news to me, since I live in a city myself!

As for the rogue fox issue.Last time that issue presented itself, the local gamekeeper set bait and shot it.

We don't have gamekeepers round here.

I'm not telling you who you should associate with. You seemed not to know where all the people opposed to hunting are. I suggested that if you broaden your circle you may find them.

Did I? If there are antis then surely its their job to make themselves known to the people that hunt?

Of course I know people who are a bit against hunting. I wouldn't adopt your wording and say "opposed" because all it has consisted of has been a statement that they find hunting cruel (or similar) and then when they realise they know someone who hunts, they tend to forget about it. PIL are a bit against it but they are pretty much anti everything, including animals kept as pets, going outdoors and getting muddy and taking any kind of risk whatsoever. I have only one friend who is more strongly anti hunting, and she's quite muted and simply voices her opinions along the lines that she feels sorry for the fox and its a shame it has to die, etc.. She is a horseowner.

I have to say, its a bit rude to suggest someone widens their social circle, because implicit within that is the suggestion that there is something wrong with that social circle or that it is some way limited. Since you can't possibly know who my social circle contains or how wide it is, I find it a bit of a strange thing to say. I stick up for my friends and I find that a stranger on the internet criticising them or my choice of friends very hurtful. If you are criticising me for not having any anti-hunt objectors as friends, it may be because they are quite rare, and not anything to do with any deficiencies in my social circle.

ChelsyHandy · 19/05/2014 23:33

I'm not telling you who you should associate with. You seemed not to know where all the people opposed to hunting are.

But anyway that's not true. Everyone knows all the people opposed to hunting are to be found on the Horse and Hound anti hunting forum pages. This was mentioned above.

ThatBloodyWoman · 19/05/2014 23:45

I've never been on the Horse and Hound anti hunting forum pages,Chelsy.

ThatBloodyWoman · 19/05/2014 23:53

I am glad to see that HSA had been working with Sea Shepherd to intervene in the seal cull in Scotland recently.

What do you think about seal culls Chelsy ?

5OBalesofHay · 20/05/2014 00:13

What the fuck have seal culls git to do with it thatstupidwoman Thats just daft. You can't hunt seals on horseback, its not water polo

5OBalesofHay · 20/05/2014 00:18

Apologies, thatbloodywoman should have got name right

Littledidsheknow · 20/05/2014 00:21

You'd save more animal lives and misery by becoming vegetarian or vegan. Heck, it's healthy, too!

Uptheairymountain · 20/05/2014 07:09

I cannot believe that some people on here are boasting about taking part in illegal activities.

Which hunts do you ride with, Chelsy? Frankly, I think they need to be investigated.

NigellasDealer · 20/05/2014 07:24

yes I have a lovely pic of m daughter out hunting this winter I was so proud of her and no it was not a drag hunt
