I have known a friend of dp's for years now. nice guy, friendly, calls for tea, helps dp out a lot .. but in conversation yesterday spoke of how he once swerved to purposely hit a rabbit. he laughed. I showed my disgust, I said "I cant believe you did that, you think that's ok?" he looked embarrassed and said "well I wouldn't be insured if I damaged my van trying to avoid him" etc and making excuses. that was not what he said to begin with. I love animals ... loathe any cruelty to any animals and teach my son the same.

aibu to not look at him the same again. its changed my whole opinion of him. is that silly?

IMO? Yes.

expatinscotland · 30/04/2014 19:32

Yes

QuizzicalCat · 30/04/2014 19:33

Yes.

sunbathe · 30/04/2014 19:33

No.

Pudtat · 30/04/2014 19:34

No.

BerniesBurneze · 30/04/2014 19:34

No not silly. I still think differently of my FIL for what he would hypothetically do on a game show! There are some things you can't unthink.

thebodydoestricks · 30/04/2014 19:35

If he did it on purpose he's vile. If he thought it was safer to hit the rabbit than to swerve then it was a sensible decision.

thebodydoestricks · 30/04/2014 19:36

Bernies come on share it.

WitchWay · 30/04/2014 19:36

There's a big difference between avoiding dangerous swerving to avoid an animal deliberately swerving to hit it*

I always try to safely avoid animals if I can but one on a dual carriageway had no choice but to run over two dogs that dashed across in front of me. There were cars behind & on my inside & I was doing 70mph. Horrible & I'm not even much of a dog lover Sad

I'd be disappointed if I discovered something like this about a friend

RoseberryTopping · 30/04/2014 19:36

Have to admit it would put me off a person as well. I don't think I would stop speaking to them over it but I'd make my disgust clear and would always remember that fact about them.

WhoNickedMyName · 30/04/2014 19:36

He deliberately swerved to ensure he hit a rabbit. What a knob. YANBU.

ThatBloodyWoman · 30/04/2014 19:37

I think he's a complete twat by the sounds, and certainly someone I'd have fuck all to do with.

redexpat · 30/04/2014 19:37

Yanbu

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 30/04/2014 19:37

Not silly at all. I loathe animal cruelty and that's what this guy boastfully admitted to.

HaroldLloyd · 30/04/2014 19:38

Very curious Bernie's.

No this would put me right off, it indicates a cruel streak.

LangenFlugelHappleHoff · 30/04/2014 19:38

It depends on the situation, before now dh has run over a duck as the options were:

1.) Swerve into a ditch

2.) Swerve into a car on other side of road

3.) Run over poor duck and hope it dies instantly.

We went with 3 but felt awful about it.

Laughing about it is horrid and I hope you made him feel rubbish about his humour.

LineRunner · 30/04/2014 19:38

I'd give him a swerve. Tosser.

ThatBloodyWoman · 30/04/2014 19:39

My dh stopped our car once -to put a poor bunny in the final stages of mixie out of it's misery.

YouTheCat · 30/04/2014 19:39

He swerved in order to hit an animal. Lovely. Hmm

So animal cruelty is okay in his view?

I wouldn't want to associate with someone who did this and admitted it.

Itsfab · 30/04/2014 19:39

He sounds like a prat for telling someone he did it never mind actually doing it.

MsBumble · 30/04/2014 19:39

To delight in killing a living being is not a very nice trait. So I don't think you're being unreasonable.

LangenFlugelHappleHoff · 30/04/2014 19:40

Okay sorry I have reread op - disregard my previous post

he is a cunt. Fact

Optimist1 · 30/04/2014 19:41

If he really did swerve to kill the rabbit he's an arse. If he just said he did it (as a joke) he's even more of an arse. I wouldn't personally feel the need to cut him out of my life, but he would have dropped significantly in my estimation when he said what he said.

Greydog · 30/04/2014 19:41

he said he did it on purpose. Made him feel all god like did it? Killing something that couldn't defend itself. It's one thing to hit an animal when you can't help it - it's another thing to go out of you way to do it. This man is a knob

defineme · 30/04/2014 19:43

I don't believe him. I think he was just attempting to tell a 'funny' story and misjudged it. I imagine he simply hit it because he couldn't avoid it. Just put him down as a bit immature rather than a psychopath.
