I have known a friend of dp's for years now. nice guy, friendly, calls for tea, helps dp out a lot .. but in conversation yesterday spoke of how he once swerved to purposely hit a rabbit. he laughed. I showed my disgust, I said "I cant believe you did that, you think that's ok?" he looked embarrassed and said "well I wouldn't be insured if I damaged my van trying to avoid him" etc and making excuses. that was not what he said to begin with. I love animals ... loathe any cruelty to any animals and teach my son the same.

aibu to not look at him the same again. its changed my whole opinion of him. is that silly?

To be honest, it sounds like a macho, quite-possibly-untrue 'boast' (wild and craazzeeee guy speeding along, not going to be not off his stride by a fubsy ickle bunny) by someone who misjudged what his company would be amused by. You were clearly supposed to say 'You're crazy, you'.

My father, who drove for a living, has said things like this in my hearing more often than I can count ('jokes' about reversing over things to finish them off), which are about as funny as the clap, but which I know for a fact are untrue, plus I'm fairly sure my dad has undiagnosed Asperger's, as he often wildly misjudges what other people will be amused by. I was once in his van as a child when he accidentally hit a dog which ran out of a gate under his wheels, and he was absolutely in bits, and was almost in tears going up to the house to tell them what had happened.

So, no it's not funny, but it's quite possibly not true. Whether that changes things for you or not...

SistersOfPercy · 30/04/2014 19:43

I swerved to purposely kill a squirrel once. It was on a dual carriageway, had already been hit and was towards the side of the road dying. I aimed for it's head and killed it.

I felt bloody awful all day but the alternative was to leave it suffering.

HeartShapedBox · 30/04/2014 19:45

yanbu, he's a wank.

I couldn't find him anything but contemptible from now on

HermioneWeasley · 30/04/2014 19:45

I am not an animal lover, have no pets and only support human charities, but even I think that purposely trying to hit an animal makes you a twat.

KatieKaye · 30/04/2014 19:46

He's warped and I'd be wondering what other horrors lie beneath the seemingly pleasant exterior. Deliberately swerving to hit a rabbit and then chatting about it and thinking it's funny? Nasty.

AbbeyBartlet · 30/04/2014 19:47

YANBU - I wouldn't be able to be pleasant to someone like that.

fuzzpig · 30/04/2014 19:49

Another curious MNer here Bernies

OP YANBU, I'm not an animal lover at all really but it would at least colour my view of him

rinabean · 30/04/2014 19:51

It's evil to delight in killing something helpless, even more so to boast about it.

Toadinthehole · 30/04/2014 19:51

He served to hit it. He didn't hit it because he was not swerving.

One of my chickens got badly attacked by a neighbourhood cat the other day. It wasn't dead, but lying in a pool of blood. I performed a mercy killing.

You won't catch me laughing about it, because I'm not.

lilrascal · 30/04/2014 19:52

wow wasn't expecting so many replies. Burren I thought it might have been a boast as there was a few lads here all big talking and he was embarrassed afterwards but that could have been that he was caught.

and to clarify as much as it would horrify me I would not blame someone for risking an animals life on the road if it meant saving themselves or oncoming vehicle. that would be sensible. but he said "on purpose".

its the trait ... evil trait of on purposely killing an innocent living thing for no reason only for sport. I cant forget it. I guess "never speaking to him again" is unrealistic as he is around a lot but I don't think I can be as comfortable.

OP posts:
Waltermittythesequel · 30/04/2014 19:56

He's either lying or a complete fucking weirdo.

Who does that? And then brags about it? Presumably he's an adult since he's old enough to drive?

Dickhead.

I'd be avoiding him in future, as much as I could. And I wouldn't mind telling him or dh why!

somekindoflife · 30/04/2014 19:58

I think it is disgusting. I wouldn't have any respect for someone who enjoyed harming living creatures.

Waltermittythesequel · 30/04/2014 20:00

There's something very, very wrong with someone who would go out of his way to hurt a defenseless animal for no other reason than the pleasure of it.

If he was a child people would be telling you about psych referrals left, right and centre.

So there's absolutely no way you should have to suck it up because it's a grown man.

Hairylegs47 · 30/04/2014 20:03

I thought most folk tried NOT to hit animals if at possible. Just a couple of weeks ago a pheasant wandered onto the A1 as we were passing, I swerved as did the other cars behind.
I think he's being a 'lad' ha ha, very funny, pity you weren't laughing. What an are he is.

Hairylegs47 · 30/04/2014 20:04

*ARSE, I mean he's an arse

Fizzybangfanny · 30/04/2014 20:04

We hit a pheasant once on a duel carriage way.

It just stepped out and carried walking straight in our path, we couldn't swerve. At the last min it looked right at us. It was horrid!

Fizzybangfanny · 30/04/2014 20:05

Cross post with hairy!

parentalunit · 30/04/2014 20:13

Was he saying it because he thought it would be funny? I have a hard time believing anyone would actually do that, but can believe that the man might have an inappropriate sense of humour (that is not really a sense of humour at all).

I'd keep a distance, not be quite as friendly, but no need to be mean. Treat him like the idiot he (probably) is.

FryOneFatManic · 30/04/2014 20:19

This would definitely change my opinion of someone. Whether he was telling the truth or not, the mere fact that he thinks it's funny would definitely change my view.

I've hit a few small animals over the years, all accidents.

But to try and deliberately hit an animal is cruel.

FunkyBoldRibena · 30/04/2014 20:40

No, not silly. I once dumped a bloke who turned up in the wrong shoes and left a photo club because they thought that if you took beautiful photos of fungi it was the done thing to stamp on it so that nobody else could come along and take a photo of the same specimen. Wankers.

ZingWatermelon · 01/05/2014 00:17

umm, if the choice is to swerve to avoid a small animal but put yourself and those in the car in danger you are supposed to hit the animal.
so that part, if that's what he did, is unfortunate but NBU

laughing about is BU though. I would get upset about someone admitting they enjoyed it.

ZingWatermelon · 01/05/2014 00:17

I meant if the other choice is...

lilola · 01/05/2014 00:20

that's hideous. hopefully he was being boastful and immature (how is that something to boast about?!) but I guess some people just like to have a bullshit story to tell. I wouldn't be able to forget he'd said it but would hope it wasn't true.

My brother's friend once boasted about hitting a cat and getting out to look at it and it was soooo hilarious to see it twitch uncontrollably. fucking nasty bitch
