Boring wedding AIBU

DP and I are having a minor disagreement over ice cream (we are having this instead of formal pudding). I will print out the thread and we will go with the majority opinion.

We are having our wedding party (not really a reception - we are getting married much earlier in the year) in a stately home-type place. At least 15 of the 100 guests are children and there will be an open alcoholic bar. In your experience:

a) It's better to hire an ice cream van because mess will be self-contained and outside.

b) It's much more cool (and cheap) to buy loads of lovely ice cream, toppings etc. and let people assemble their own indoors from an 'ice cream bar'. They can be trusted not to make a mess.

Who is U, a) or b)?

Neither

Both are fine

CountessOfRule · 06/04/2014 16:55

a) is the better plan.

JumpingJackSprat · 06/04/2014 16:55

I would not trust 15 kids not to make a mess with free access to ice cream. Get an ice cream van.

Sirzy · 06/04/2014 16:55

B sounds messy and unhygenic.

Picturesinthefirelight · 06/04/2014 16:56

B

I don't like ice cream from ice cream vans & I would much prefer (if dressed in nice wedding clothes) to eat from a dish rather than a cone where it's impossible to make a mess.

Cookiepants · 06/04/2014 16:56

I would go for the van. How will the ice cream be kept cold in the ice cream bar?

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 06/04/2014 16:57

If b how will you keep it frozen?

ShinyTurd · 06/04/2014 16:57

A without a doubt. Imagine the mess of kids assembling their own Shock

Picturesinthefirelight · 06/04/2014 16:57

I guess I'd envisaged a big freezer like you get at all inclusive hotels.

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 06/04/2014 16:58

The ice cream bar sounds more fun but either option will be brilliant so I don't think you can go wrong. My vote is for Option B though, with the advantage that it's not weather-dependent (not much fun to queue in the rain?).

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 06/04/2014 16:59

Would the stately home allow you to do (b)? I'm guessing it's them that will be cleaning up any mess rather than you.

YellowDinosaur · 06/04/2014 17:03

Option b would be much better if you had people to serve it (and then you could help yourself to toppings) and facilities to keep the ice cream frozen.

However as you describe it as more of a free for all I think option a is better

ICanSeeTheSun · 06/04/2014 17:05

Option b and pay for someone to supervise the children.

AnotherFurry · 06/04/2014 17:05

A definitely, less mess

RedRoom · 06/04/2014 17:06

I like A.

Bowlersarm · 06/04/2014 17:06

Ice cream van (if allowed by stately home, but won't they want their own caterer?)

Fillybuster · 06/04/2014 17:09

Can't you do a van with really nice ice cream, nice toppings and a choice of cone or bowl and spoon?

I'd definitely go for the van option, then try to make the contents as nice as possible :)

Enjoy the wedding!

onadifferentplanet · 06/04/2014 17:09

A) Ds has a holiday job working on an old fashioned ice cream barrow at events and weddings. It is always really popular with adults and children and he serves cornets and tubs.

trinity0097 · 06/04/2014 17:12

I would go with outside person, but ensure that they can do tubs not just cones.

hamptoncourt · 06/04/2014 17:13

I would deffo do A rather than B.

workhouse · 06/04/2014 17:13

Definitely b. especially as it is in place of all dessert. People will behave like they do at a savoury buffet, with the adults serving their children surely.

saintlyjimjams · 06/04/2014 17:14

Either.

My kids would love either option.

However you would have to get the timing very right on B unless you have a freezer/pizza hut style ice cream factory or you'd have a huge mess on your hands.

eddielizzard · 06/04/2014 17:15

i think a is more fun.

WooWooOwl · 06/04/2014 17:16

Go with A

PotteringAlong · 06/04/2014 17:16

If you can get someone to run b) then it sounds great.

If you can't then a) every time
