Here we go! Thread five! Thread four filled in one month!

Here is a link to thread four & you can work back from there.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/2017939-Nest-of-Vapers-we-continue-to-not-BU-to-carry-on-vaping?pg=1

We are all always happy to answer any question. No question is too daft or unreasonable! We all know what a minefield of terminology it is when you first take up vaping.

Here is Allergic's great summary for anyone who is starting vaping:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Thanks ilovesooty! Too late for the reduced Vamo but I snapped up a few bits and pieces Grin

I googled the swedish fish liquid. Didn't know they were sweets - I thought you were vaping a herring flavour with your pineapple, Schro Shock

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 16/04/2014 21:26

Ha! I thought it was that weird rotting fish that is popular in Sweden when I first seen the name. Very nice though, tastes like fruit salad sweeties if you remember them?

Cantabile · 16/04/2014 21:30

I was expecting some sort of pickled herring from Swedish fish! We live and learn Grin

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 16/04/2014 21:34

wow that is the first time I have heard of an ecig company closing down! The ego ce4+ kit looks quite good value for a new vaper - the batteries are a decent size and there are two of them! I would never have bought it at the original price though.

Shona so pleased you're getting on ok with the new mvp Smile

ilovesooty · 16/04/2014 22:14

They're ceasing trading at the moment due to family illness apparently Plenty

Lora1982 · 17/04/2014 00:14

Im finally here ladies Grin ive finally had a full day if just the ecig. Ive been mixing fags and ecigs for a year but today I took the plunge. Im currently vaping pineapple pg. Can someone advise wether vg gives a better throat hit over pg? My dp has a vg in his right now and I don't know why but I prefer it!

Going to go look at the shutting down shop. Congrats to me for day one all :-D yay

Allergictoironing · 17/04/2014 08:55

Congratulations Lora Easter Smile.

I took months from first starting to use a cigalike back in the late summer (halved real cigarette consumption) down to 5 a day with a decent set up then 2 a day for ages until finally going completely smoke free just a couple of months ago. Everyone is different in how they manage things.

I'm on pineapple myself mostly, the Hangsen which is 70% PG 30% VG. PG is better for throat hit & VG for vapour, 70/30 or 60/40 seem to be the most common mixes, and there are some companies out there who will make the liquids up to your specification (though they can be a bit more expensive of course).

Cantabile · 17/04/2014 09:18

Congratulations Lora Easter Grin

I am thanks plenty ofpubegardens. It's a dream. Thankyou for all yor advice x

Loving these threads :)
VVaper guy has a box of triple menthol for me but they are 24mg not 16mg that i have been using.

I told him i vape 16mg not 24mg but he said i should try it as it is the strongest liquid they sell.

i find that odd as i thought higher nicotine didn't make a stronger flavour.

confused

MaggieMcGill · 17/04/2014 09:40

Sole I find nicotine level has a lot to do with flavour. I have tried a few times to cut down from 12mg to 6mg but I just don't get a good throat hit with 6mg and I'm left unsatisfied.

I went into a local shop and bought some new liquid yesterday, tried a new flavour in 18mg which was lovely but bought it in 12 and it's just not as nice as I remember in the shop.

Wow! Post has just arrived and both my JJ and FT orders are here Grin

For anyone else waiting on an FT order it left FT on the 2nd but never left for the UK until I think the 12th. Surely that is a record Grin

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 17/04/2014 09:59

I think nicotine itself has a slight flavour - a kind of pepperiness. That's daft trying to get you to buy 24mg though. Maybe he had a load that was nearing its sell by date?

neddle · 17/04/2014 15:29

Newbie Question

My dh has been smoking forever, but now wants to try ecigs both for cost savings and as a way to stop completely.

He currently smokes 20 B&H Gold a day and we think that a disposable tank/battery system sounds best.

Where do we start? Recommended websites or is it best to go to a shop? Can you try things in the ecig shop?

Thanks.

windchime · 17/04/2014 15:35

Are these the things which have been exploding in peoples' faces recently?

Allergictoironing · 17/04/2014 15:37

Hi Neddle. If you do have a local dedicated e-cig shop then that's definitely the best way to go; you may end up paying just a little bit more for stuff but the help and advice are invaluable.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 17/04/2014 15:54

Yes winchime, none of us have faces left Hmm

Ecigs run on a Li-Ion battery, just like your phone, ipod, laptop, tablet ... and just like any of those other things, occasionally someone will use the wrong charger and the battery will catch fire. Strangely though, fires caused by all those other things don't tend to make national headlines - can't imagine why!

Meanwhile, every six days, someone dies from a fire caused by cigarettes or smoking materials.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 17/04/2014 16:02

My phone once gave me a shock and went on fire on the charger, somehow I can't see anyone challenging whether phones should be used for that reason!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 17/04/2014 16:03

Neddle, I really wouldn't recommend any of the disposable things on the market. They work out very expensive and most people find they are not satisfying enough to keep them off the fags.

Definitely go to a local vaping shop if you have one, if not, you could do worse than get two of these kits and a few different 10ml bottles from here.

If he's on 20 a day, 18mg is a good strength to start on. Wish him good luck!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 17/04/2014 16:06

Didn't you call the national papers, Schro? You could have done a sadface Easter Sad if you still had a face

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 17/04/2014 16:19

No I didn't seemed like something that could happen when you risk using something that requires being hooked up to electricity.

Daily Fail would have loved it though "They gave me a phone instead of my goat and it tried to kill me with fire Easter Sad"

Cantabile · 17/04/2014 18:44

Neddle, welcome! Most people want to start vaping with something as close a cigarette as possible, and then simply feel that it isn't that good and isn't that much cheaper. So they either go back to fags or they upgrade to decent kit. I tried a rather cumbersome cigalike quite a few years ago, and hated it, so went straight back on the fags, but because of that perhaps, when I came across one of these vaping threads (possibly the first one?!) I went straight onto a VV Ego 1000mAh, and haven't looked back.

It may be your dh won't feel comfortable until he's tried the cigalikes, but once he has - assuming he doesn't like them, or wants to save sensible money by refilling - then try to get him to upgrade rather than fall back.

Good luck.

Cantabile · 17/04/2014 18:46

Easter Grin Schro. Love that!

My MVP arrived while I was out, so was sitting waiting for me when I got home just now. So those of you who are expert in these things (looking at you Plenty and Magi and Allergic to mention but a few!), tell me this, if the resistance is 2.4 what should you set the VV/VW to?
