To let my ten year old wear 2 inch heels to the school disco?

She's desperate to wear them...she's only got them because she needed a pair with heels in a show she did recently and I got her a cheap pair...they're the kind with straps.

She's had a bad time recently and suffered a knock in her confidence as well as the upheaval of moving house. She would wear them with plain jeans and a t shirt....is that oK or will all the other Mothers be cursing me?

I don't allow my DDs to wear any really grown up clothing at all....the heels are a sort of cuban heel really....but definitely a little bit grown up looking.

Let her wear them.

I remember at that age going to the disco in my pinheels with metal tips so they went clip clop Grin

Hope she has a great time.

usual I agree what a dreadful phrase.

sounds like an old DJ presenter circa 1974.

just sad.

I personally find it a bit naff to wear proper character shoes to a school disco. However a shoe the same sort if style & height would be fine (I wouldn't let dd go above 1.5 inches though.

And ballet flats are really bad for your feet, no arch supports

I have two pertinent memories to share:

Age 11, we used to love our character shoes and skirts and every saturday we'd sneak out from the ballet school to M&S in them without changing (with a top on over the leotard though!), we'd go to buy our tunafish sandwiches and giggle all the way there and back as we thought we looked do grown up :)

Age 16, being humiliated by having no dressed up clothes to go out with to celebrate finishing gcse's, i had nothing and had to refuse invitations. Sone girls made me into their 'project', loaned me some clothes and donated a pair of their old heeled court shoes so I could come with them. They meant well and I accepted the shoes but it was humiliating and horrible. Because my mother had strange ideas about what a teenager should wear and beyond school uniform I only had a skirt and blouse for church.

Which memory did me harm I wonder?

(my son doesn't care about his clothes, being four, but I will always make sure he has clothes and shoes that let him fit in, and more than that, make him feel proud of himself and the way he looks).

Character shoes with a Cuban heel can be used at RAD grade 3 and above. Dd1, who is 11, has had these since she was about 8. Before that she had low heeled (about half an inch) character shoes.

I must be the chavviest mum on here because dd1 has a pair of black 3 inch heels. They make her feel confident when singing in talent shows and make her look much taller (she is short for her age). She does not wear them all the time, and mainly for performance related activities.

She also dances at Intermediate level and wears pointe shoes. Again she is young for this but has danced a LOT (we're talking a couple of hours a day here), and has the strength in her feet, legs and core to support her in this.

Let her wear them op, and pay no attention to the comments of dammitsue. My dd knows hat she has to wear appropriate footwear for any given activity.

The shoes (the higher ones linked above) look to me like New Yorkers and girls at our dance school may wear them at approx 13/14 for stage groups. The younger dancers wear the Cuban heeled character shoes and barely notice the difference!

let her wear them. Theres alot worse things she could be doing than wearing 2 inch heels. I have experience in health promotion in schools whilst studying for my masters and I cant bring myself to tell you what some 10/11 year olds are up to!!
hope she has fun at her disco x

Picturesinthefirelight · 02/04/2014 19:59

Dd doesn't do character anymore at her new school which she is sad about. There is no character in Inter Foundation.

alseb · 02/04/2014 20:05

Let her wear them. She will feel great. I would not even consider the thoughts of the other mothers.

Me too, especially as I saw some heels on fb the other day with disney princess's on them.

GiveTwoSheets · 02/04/2014 22:07

Yes I would let her wear them I did when my daughter has special events, parties and yes they do take little handbags, even in summer time she had small wedge heels

Hope she has a fab time.

GiveTwoSheets · 02/04/2014 22:08

Had not has!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 02/04/2014 22:18

I hope you've decided to let her wear them OP.

She's in year 6, not aged 6 and is a bit shorter than her friends and not the most confident at the moment.

She's happy and confident wearing the shoes.

What's not to like?

I hope she has a great time at the disco.
