To let my ten year old wear 2 inch heels to the school disco?

She's desperate to wear them...she's only got them because she needed a pair with heels in a show she did recently and I got her a cheap pair...they're the kind with straps.

She's had a bad time recently and suffered a knock in her confidence as well as the upheaval of moving house. She would wear them with plain jeans and a t shirt....is that oK or will all the other Mothers be cursing me?

I don't allow my DDs to wear any really grown up clothing at all....the heels are a sort of cuban heel really....but definitely a little bit grown up looking.

Sue genuinely interested, considering your strong views do you think other adult women who wear high heels are 'slutty' or over provocative? Putting aside the child aspect you appear very sure that high heels are designed to be sexually attractive and serve no other purpose, so does it follow that you feel a teacher, GP or other parent wearing 4 inch heels is dressing like a slut?

ThatBloodyWoman · 02/04/2014 16:02

I wouldn't let my daughters.

But I also wouldn't think it were a real shocker if someone else does.

FauxFox · 02/04/2014 16:02

Oh cross-post. At least you are consistent.

pommedeterre · 02/04/2014 16:04

sue is winding you up people - ignore her

tobiasfunke · 02/04/2014 16:05

I helped at the p6/7 disco last year and there were quite a few girls in heels. It's quite a nice area round here- not slut central. It was perfectly acceptable.
I remember my mother letting me ponce around in a pair of red stilettos when I was about 14. It didn't turn me into a porn star. I was the quiet swotty one. From my late teens on I have preferred a flat shoe to a heel.

FauxFox · 02/04/2014 16:09

OK, what else do you feel is inappropriate for women to wear sue? Are skirts allowed? If so what length is acceptable? Make-up? If so which kinds? Should shoulders be covered? what about jewellery? Perfume? Hair Dye? Hair Straightening? Fake Tan? Nail Polish? What about skinny jeans or leggins or tube skirts or dresses are they too tight?

Can you describe an outfit that wouldn't offend you?

meditrina · 02/04/2014 16:12

Perhaps sue could start a new thread for those who are keen to discuss her views?

(Sorry, don't know why the thread police have inhabited me today! But perhaps this thread can avoid a typical descent, and remain of some use to OP).

thebody · 02/04/2014 16:13

have no idea what [slut high] means and am so glad my teen dds wouldn't know the meaning either.

what a mysoginistic disgusting and disgraceful phrase for anyone to use.

so what was the rape victim wearing then deeply vile.

op let her wear them. she will feel lovely and a princess.

almondcake · 02/04/2014 16:19

Oscar, those heels are 2.5 inches. I assume they're for an older age group of dancers. A pp was giving a different set of guidelines for girls doing ballroom - I think 1 and three eighths of an inch, so it varies between disciplines, but I don't think there are any where a 10 year old would be in the heels you linked to.

oscarwilde · 02/04/2014 16:26

Hi Almond - I googled "character shoes" (never heard of them until today) and had a hunt around. I could only find 1.5 or 2.5 inch heels. The pic you posted earlier was photographed from the front so I couldn't actually see what the fuss was about, so I googled.
My post was supposed to infer my bafflement as both shoes are listed as 2.5ins high though one pair looks significantly higher than the other. It was a clumsy attempt (clearly since Sue seems to think I share her views) to demonstrate that the OP could have some very conservative shoes in mind whereas many of us imagine a 2 inch heel as something much closer to the high pair.

Pawprint · 02/04/2014 16:36

I would let her wear them, as long as they don't hurt her feet. They don't sound in any way offensive or sexualising.

Marne · 02/04/2014 16:43

I let my dd weta what she wants to the school disco, luckily she's not very girly but will wear a bit of make up on school disco night, there are girls that wear heals and lots of make up, most of them are the year 6's but I don't see a problem with it, discos are meant to be for dressing up and having fun.

TheTerribleBaroness · 02/04/2014 16:46

I'm very disappointed at Sue being deleted. I was laughing my head off at her comments.

TheTerribleBaroness · 02/04/2014 16:46

batshit crazy

almondcake · 02/04/2014 16:49

Oscar, you may be right I think!

I think these are DD's shoes - which would make them 1.5 inches:

And the OP's DD does a different kind of dance in a 2 inch heel, perhaps these?

SaucyJack · 02/04/2014 16:52

There's only one poster round here who's sexualising children- and it ain't the OP.......

twofingerstoGideon · 02/04/2014 17:07

YANBU OP. I'm sure no lasting damage will be done to your DD.

Hulababy · 02/04/2014 17:22

DD is 11y - 12y this weekend. She has some smallish heels and has worn similar for last couple of years for school disco/parties. Many of her friends did too. I figured for the occasionally time it would be fine - and so far it has been.

oscarwilde · 02/04/2014 17:26

Cheers Almond - I've been trying to find ballet shoes with pre-attached elastics sodding john lewis
Shhh - better not let Sue see these or she'll have a stroke

My daughter's friend has a pair exactly like those you describe so DD has been pestering me to get her a pair too... I haven't done so (yet), as I know she will only get to wear them once or twice, but they do not look in the least slutty, especially when worn with 'normal' school disco outfits. They are really rather cute and DD's friend likes them because she is the shortest girl in the class and they boost her height. I'm more worried about the handful of 10-year-olds who turn up with a full face of make-up and clothes more suited to a 14/15-year-old... don't know what their parents are thinking.

TheFrightenedMonkey · 02/04/2014 18:45

Is it just me that's now tempted to get myself a pair of these badboys??
