to think my neighbour has overreacted?

My MIL has a bit of a mouth on her, and yesterday, shouted at our neighbour who accused her of driving too fast into our close as she was putting her kids in the car. MIL shouldn't have said what she did so I went round to try and smooth things over as MIL was really upset.
I spoke to the neighbour and pointed out that MIL was so upset and that she would never hurt a child, but the woman was still very angry about it as it was in front of her children and she was on her own drive. I said I didn't want to argue and she said she didn't care as she had called the police! Wtf! I told her if she did that I'd tell them she didn't supervise her kids properly as I've seen them run out into the road.
I thought she was bluffing but there was a police car there just now! AIBU to think it's a waste of police time if she's just having a moan about my MIL?

It doesn't just sound awful, it is awful. In front of children too. I have no sympathy with your MIL.

Beamur · 28/03/2014 18:39

What she said is awful and incredibly rude to say that to your neighbour. I think she needs to have a bit of a reflect about that short fuse. That sort of language, especially in front of kids is really out of order.
YABU and so was she.

CarolineKnappShappey · 28/03/2014 18:40

OMG she told her to fuck off , and called her a whore in front of her kids?!!!

You do realise that normal people don't act like this.

I hope your mother gets cautioned. What disgusting behaviour. You should both be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/03/2014 18:40

I'd have ring the police if some stupid fucker had driven so badly she had to slam her brakes on and then called me a whore and told me to fuck off in front of my children

She deserves the police to go round

And I can't believe you're defending her, have you lost your fucking mind?

SweetTeaVodka · 28/03/2014 18:41

Another one here who thinks YABU. I'm not surprised your neighbour was really upset!

formerbabe · 28/03/2014 18:41

Your mil deserved to be called 'a f whore'...afteral she told her to fuck off after driving dangerously.

MrsCampbellBlack · 28/03/2014 18:41

Your Mil told her to fuck off and called her a whore in front of her children and you think the neighbour is over-reacting. Ummm ok.

Forgettable · 28/03/2014 18:41

Oh dear, the lady prob felt quite intimidated. Has mil apologised? That might help.

shakinstevenslovechild · 28/03/2014 18:44

Were your neighbours kids there when your MIL called her a silly fucking whore Shock

GlassCaseofEmotion · 28/03/2014 18:44

Sorry OP but YABU. We live in a cul de sac and if anyone needed to slam their brakes on they would definitely have been going too fast for the conditions. To do that in a close she knows children live in is reckless. To top that off with verbal abuse is awful behaviour. I appreciate things escalate but that is behaviour that would make me dial 101 if it happened to me. No one deserves to be sworn at and called names, especially not on their own doorstep in front of their children. Sorry OP - not nice that you got dragged in.

Fortysomethingwinelover · 28/03/2014 18:44

It sounds like your MIL was bang out of order. It's disgusting language to use in front of kids, calling their mother a fucking whore.

StarGazeyPond · 28/03/2014 18:44

And I can't believe you're defending her, have you lost your fucking mind?

This ^^

kungfupannda · 28/03/2014 18:45

Oh dear. The speeding has probably become a bit irrelevant - it's her subsequent abusive behaviour that the police will be interested in.

They could quite properly arrest her for S.5 of the Public Order Act - insulting/abusive/etc words or behaviour.

And she'll only have herself to blame if they do. "Lovely women" do not tell people to fuck off and call them silly whores in front of their children.

KirstyJC · 28/03/2014 18:45

I think your MIL sounds hideous! She thinks it's OK to say that in front of children and you are defending her? Where do you live, Jeremy-Kyle land?

Stropzilla · 28/03/2014 18:46

Speeding then verbal abuse and you think the neighbour was the one in the wrong? Think your mil should be apologising tbh.

DebbieOfMaddox · 28/03/2014 18:46

So your MIL was driving dangerously (if she admits to having to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting children who were on their own drive then what she's not admitting to will be a heck of a lot worse) and then got aggressive when called out on it? Not surprising that the police were called, TBH.

And you've not exactly helped the situation, have you?

kungfupannda · 28/03/2014 18:47

And fwiw, if the police do come round, I wouldn't advise any tit-for-tat allegations of child neglect. It won't remotely help your MIL's position, and may well give the police the idea that your family is harassing your neighbour.

formerbabe · 28/03/2014 18:49

Oh did the mil call the woman an effing whore or the other way round? I'm confused.

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 28/03/2014 18:49

Can you imagine how your neighbour felt? Shaken up by thinking her children might be hit by a car and then subjected to that kind of verbal abuse in front of them? I think she is right to call the police, your MIL shouldn't be allowed to get away with that kind of behaviour and hopefully will think twice before being so aggressive and vile in the future!

hercules1 · 28/03/2014 18:49

Your mil was awful. I would have called the police on her. Your behaviour wasn't much better.

CarolineKnappShappey · 28/03/2014 18:50

I really hope they throw the book at your mother.

If I was the neighbour and if you rent I would be logging this with your landlord.

Do you have kids? How would you explain a woman shouting that you were a whore to them? Or what Fuck off meant?

Truly, truly disgusting behaviour.

FunkyBoldRibena · 28/03/2014 18:51

Come off it - she was driving too fast in a built up area where kids can run into roads AND the told her to fuck off AND called her a whore and you think she over reacted?

Your MIL needs to wind her neck in.

MissDuke · 28/03/2014 18:51

Oh dear, what a nightmare for your neighbour. Sorry, but mil sounds awful, I hope she can come to realise that she was in the wrong - I wish you could realise that too. You spoke to the neighbour because mil was upset???

MarthasHarbour · 28/03/2014 18:52

Oh my god are you for real? How can you defend this behaviour and then childishly threaten to telk the police she doesn't supervise her DCs..

I am beyond Shock
