to think my neighbour has overreacted?

My MIL has a bit of a mouth on her, and yesterday, shouted at our neighbour who accused her of driving too fast into our close as she was putting her kids in the car. MIL shouldn't have said what she did so I went round to try and smooth things over as MIL was really upset.
I spoke to the neighbour and pointed out that MIL was so upset and that she would never hurt a child, but the woman was still very angry about it as it was in front of her children and she was on her own drive. I said I didn't want to argue and she said she didn't care as she had called the police! Wtf! I told her if she did that I'd tell them she didn't supervise her kids properly as I've seen them run out into the road.
I thought she was bluffing but there was a police car there just now! AIBU to think it's a waste of police time if she's just having a moan about my MIL?

Why do people get so worked up about reverses? Its a good way of gaguing opinion... Especially if you're feeling a bit fragile about the situation.

OP YANBU, would love to see MIL's face when the police turn up!

Shonajoy · 29/03/2014 21:32

Having to slam on brakes implies excessive speed for the conditions. Also, dead ends, closes, etc often have children playing. We have a 20mph limit, and a neighbour will turn a blind corner going far too fast.

Gruntfuttock · 29/03/2014 22:19

Sorry, OP but one thing to bear in mind when doing a reverse AIBU is that it can look as if someone only suddenly says 'OK it's a reverse' because they were getting unanimous and vehement disapproval of their behaviour. I really don't know what to think now tbh.

liverpoolnana · 29/03/2014 22:42

Well, I am TOTALLY confused.

Could someone be very kind to a daft old grandma and explain it all to me? Is the OP in fact the 'shouted-at' neighbour, for instance?

And did her landlord tell her what the offender said about her, otherwise how did she know?

Sorry to be dim! I don't understand the concept of reverse AIBUs, obviously.

MamaMumra · 30/03/2014 02:26

Apparently OP was called a whore by her neighbour's MIL and she was the one that called the police, and is now worried she was BU...

For those unable to read the whole thread:

THIS IS A REVERSE AIBU

Morloth · 30/03/2014 07:21

Reverses are stupid because you can't possibly know what is going on inside the other person's head.

It is just a way to weight the conversation so everyone says exactly what you want them to say.

It pointless and annoying.

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 30/03/2014 07:52

Agreed, Morloth, I don't think it's fair to put words in someone else's mouth.

Obviously, the MIL and DIL have acted very unreasonably but I don't think there is anything to be gained by imagining what they might say about it.

eskinosekiss · 30/03/2014 08:07

Reverse AIBUs (and the whole of mumsnet in fact) are so much easier if you change your settings, so mumsnet is forever displayed with the OPs posts highlighted throughout the thread.

I still want to know who the Royal Warrant is. I've got visions of Camilla turning the air blue!! Grin.
