To not want people to poo in my downstairs toilet?!

Scornedwoman67 · 24/03/2014 17:14

I will start by saying I am a fairly relaxed person when it comes to the house. I like tidy, but am not obsessed about cleaning etc.
A few years ago, after my divorce, I bougt my current house & had a downstairs toilet installed. Because of space constraints, it is off the kitchen. I have a rule that basically it's only for No.1's. I sort of assumed that most people would realise that anyway, firstly because it is near the kitchen, and secondly because it isn't exactly soundproof Blush
Anyway, a friend & her DH visited yesterday. I will add that he has history - he has on at least one previous occasion taken himslef upstairs & sat in that loo for a 'session' ( apologies if you're eating Smile) but yesterday he excelled himself. We were sitting in the lounge chatting & he disappeared out of the room. I went in to the kitchen a few minutes later & he shouted through the door to announce where he was. His DW rather nervously reminded him about my rule ( knowing what he is like, I suspect) to which he replied 'oh dear'.

Whilst I can see the funny side of it, I do think it is rude....or AIBU?!

I'm thinking of putting a bloody great big sign on the door now!!!!

How long ago did you put it in? It probably doesn't comply with regs you know.

anyway ...

I agree that it's bad manners to take a dump at someone else's house, unless absolutely necessary, but then I am in the 'won't poo at work' camp also.

But a sign would be going a bit far.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 24/03/2014 18:33

Not any more whois, they changed the regs a while back.

giraffeseatpineapples · 24/03/2014 18:33

Could you put a lock on it for when you have vistitors. explain its broken if queried?

Scornedwoman67 · 24/03/2014 18:33

Thanks for thay whois. Rancid. What a lovely word. - it was done because that was the only place it could go. I live in a small house.
No the regs have been relaxed.
As previously explained, I needed an extra loo as I have two teenagers.

i wonder if i could use its unhyginic issue so i could exchange house... ... hmm ponders if i should phone ha and complaine

whatever5 · 24/03/2014 18:39

Is there actually a door in the kitchen to the toilet? As others have said I don't think that would conform to building regulations.

Anyway, I can see why you wouldn't want anyone to do a poo in there but I don't think that everyone thinks about that kind of thing. Also I suppose that sometimes the poo may be a surprise! I hope you have a good extractor fan.

BeverleyMoss · 24/03/2014 18:39

You're probably right about the regs but I'm sure if there's no window you should have a powered vent in there.

Capitola · 24/03/2014 18:41

I'd be quite surprised if an adult guest took a shit in our downstairs loo.

Visiting kids do it, fair enough. But I don't think an adult has ever - maybe we're lucky!

OnlyLovers · 24/03/2014 18:41

YABU and weird. It sounds like that League of Gentlemen sketch where the poor young bloke has come to stay with his aunt and uncle and they show him a particular loo: 'Into which we do NOT pass solids.'

Then again, your guest was being a bit weird announcing to you all where he was.

Looking at this exchange: 'DW rather nervously reminded him about my rule to which he replied 'oh dear'; the soundproofing can't be that bad, can it, or you'd have heard him taking a crap?

I'd recommend you get some air freshener and a grip.

hunreeeal · 24/03/2014 18:43

YABU. Get an extractor fan and an air freshener.

Scornedwoman67 · 24/03/2014 18:44

Oh well, looks like 50% of us are 'weird' and 'need to get a grip'
They will be the 50% that I let use my downstairs loo. Smile

Bowlersarm · 24/03/2014 18:45

OP, 50% of this thread haven't agreed with you, if that's what you think? You need to count up properly!

HesterShaw · 24/03/2014 18:48

Yabu.

However I thought that building regs dictate you can't have a loo opening directly into a kitchen. As it were?

HesterShaw · 24/03/2014 18:49

Oh god. Must read whole thread.

treaclesoda · 24/03/2014 18:51

Bad manners to take a dump at someone else's house unless it's necessary?

Surely the very nature of needing the toilet is that it's necessary? It's nit something people do for fun Grin

And I speak as someone who has 'issues' in that department and finds it quite upsetting to need to go anywhere other than at home. Which is particularly stressful as I have bowel problems. And threads like this tend to make upsetting reading because if I go to a friend's house and find myself struggling and needing the toilet, it makes a horrible situation worse to think that I might be silently judged for my poor toilet etiquette.

soundevenfruity · 24/03/2014 18:54

Didn't India Knight recommend Hissop's poo drops which completely eliminate the smell. I would be inclined to be practical about it and just have it in the loo with a detailed explanation how to use it.

mrsminiverscharlady · 24/03/2014 18:55

YANBU to not want people to poo in the downstairs toilet. YABU and rude to actually try and enforce it.

Macocious · 24/03/2014 18:57

I agree with you OP but accept that I'm in the minority. Got flamed on another forum for starting a similar thread!

NoArmaniNoPunani · 24/03/2014 18:58

Replace the toilet with a urinal. Job done

giraffeseatpineapples · 24/03/2014 19:02

Maybe 50 % think yanbu not to like it but hardly anyone thinks it would be reasonable to enforce this with visitors

WholeNutt · 24/03/2014 19:03

I'm sorry, I'm too busy laughing at your OP to post a proper reply!

Marcelinewhyareyousomean · 24/03/2014 19:05

Yanbu.

I would have thought most people would use downstairs for wee unless there was a poo emergency.

spidey66 · 24/03/2014 19:16

I always understood it to be the law that there had to be 2 doors between the kitchen and the loo, but apparently building regs have now changed and as long as there's a closable door and a sink in the loo, there only needs to be one door.

But yes, you're being unreasonable. A loo's a loo!

spidey66 · 24/03/2014 19:17

treaclesoda...I have IBS. I'd better not go to your house, otherwise I may end up pooing in my pants.

Scornedwoman67 · 24/03/2014 19:17

thanks macocious - I did start this as a semi-lighthearted discussion - but I was genuinely interested in the general consensus
I amazes me how angry people get on some of these threads though
I've been called 'precious', 'weird', 'uptight' and 'controlling'

Very strange indeed Confused
