To not want people to poo in my downstairs toilet?!

I will start by saying I am a fairly relaxed person when it comes to the house. I like tidy, but am not obsessed about cleaning etc.
A few years ago, after my divorce, I bougt my current house & had a downstairs toilet installed. Because of space constraints, it is off the kitchen. I have a rule that basically it's only for No.1's. I sort of assumed that most people would realise that anyway, firstly because it is near the kitchen, and secondly because it isn't exactly soundproof
Anyway, a friend & her DH visited yesterday. I will add that he has history - he has on at least one previous occasion taken himslef upstairs & sat in that loo for a 'session' ( apologies if you're eating ) but yesterday he excelled himself. We were sitting in the lounge chatting & he disappeared out of the room. I went in to the kitchen a few minutes later & he shouted through the door to announce where he was. His DW rather nervously reminded him about my rule ( knowing what he is like, I suspect) to which he replied 'oh dear'.

Whilst I can see the funny side of it, I do think it is rude....or AIBU?!

I'm thinking of putting a bloody great big sign on the door now!!!!

Whilst personally I can see where you're coming from I think most people see any toilet as fair game for a poo... A toilet is a toilet!

There isn't a window or anything. I think it's horrible. I'm honestly not normally fussed by toilet-related matters.
It's probably because I just wouldn't do it myself... the after effects weren't pleasant for any of us !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously you either lock it for everyone permanantly or accept it will get used.

YABU if you expect people to know which toilet you want them to use. There was a recent thread where a poster said she didn't want guests using her upstairs toilet at all. If it REALLY bothers you that much, you should put up a sign. It would be better than embarrassing your guests like you are now!

wtf?? Intrusive much? Sorry but YABVU to try to dictate what people do in the loo! Get a window or extractor fan plus a candle, radio, whatever you need to do to make you happy but don't embarrass your guests!

There was a thread last week where someone was saying guests should only use the downstairs loo and never the upstairs bathroom. You can't both be right...

The fact it's off the kitchen wouldn't bother me at all, that's what toilets are for! you'd probably hate the fact that everyone in this house poos with the door open!

YABU. He probably saw you were upset when he did it in your precious upstairs toilet and decided to try the other (smaller?) toilet this time.

When you have to go, you have to go. What do you expect your guests to do - go poo on the street like a dog?

In terms of it not being soundproof surely it is just as off pointing when a man has a wee? You chose to put the toilet in.

I can see what you are saying completely but after I've had a succession of workman over the last few months,I can see not everyone thinks the same way. I was a bit that some of them told me some people make them find a public loo. One of them apparently crapped himself after driving round for an hour to find a loo. Poor sod.

If you don't want it used as a toilet, then take the damn thing out and use it as a utility room or something instead.

What is the point in having a toilet if you don't want to use it for the purpose its intended because the location bothers you? I don't get it. You are far too precious.

I don't think you are BU to not want people pooing right next to your kitchen. This has always been a rule with everyone I know growing up.

But YABU to expect everyone else to always remember this. So put up a note if you want the rule adhered to.

I mean, I wouldn't myself in general poo in other people's loos. My bowel is fairly well trained. However, I am accepting of the fact that other people have their own bowels and habits and perhaps fewer hang ups.

YABU. It's a toilet and he used it for its purpose. I find it funny that you have a rule that guests are made aware of, about where they can and cannot poo. I would never dream of announcing that to someone. I would hope he had the manners to leave the toilet in the state he found it (the smell will pass!) but otherwise no, his behaviour was acceptable.

Surely it isn't directly off the kitchen? And no window? Presumably an automatic extractor fan? You are of course being unreasonable, people can't always hang on until they get home!

Until I moved into my last house I would have said yabu. But it had a downstairs toilet next to the front door and directly between the kitchen and living room. Day 1 dd went for a poo in it. They were banned from that point on.
The good thing about having small children is that they informed all visitors of this rule whenever they used it.
Tbh it's not a firm rule but is definitely a personal preference and I wouldn't poo in someone elses downstairs toilet for that reason.

You don't always realise you need a poo until you sit down; by then it's rather too late to do anything about it!

Unless it were for what I would consider a 'real' reason like poor drainage, I would say you were being unreasonable to dictate what people do in your toilet. So, yes, YABU.
