This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

So, last night I went out for the first time since starting vaping, it was brilliant! No frozen hands, vaped in the Solid Rock in Glasgow, Glasgow O2 and the Cathouse, amazing to be able to vape and drink at the same time.

Bit hungover though.

magimedi · 30/03/2014 12:10

That's one of the lovely bonuses of vaping, Schro.

SORRY ABOUT THE HANGOVER Wine

OP posts:
SchroSawMargeryDaw · 30/03/2014 12:12

It was great. :) And I realised hos many vapers there are now!

I don't even know if I am hungover, I think I am still pissed. I'm not a drinker (once every couple of months usually) and when I do it never seems to wear off!

Ta for the Wine Hair of the dog an all that. :o

Which flavour are you on now, Derek?

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 30/03/2014 13:31

I've found hangovers far less evil since giving up smoking.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 30/03/2014 13:33

Yeah I don't think hangover is as bad as it could be.

Still on the exotic?

SoleSource · 30/03/2014 13:34

My teeth are becoming yellowish. Anybody have this too because of vaping?

Any tips?

I use electric toothbrush and am trying Blanc toothpaste.

magimedi · 30/03/2014 13:41

Can't say I've noticed that, Sole.

Are you drinking more tea or something like that?

OP posts:
SoleSource · 30/03/2014 13:44

No. I drink one or two large cups per day. Does nicotine stain teeth?

magimedi · 30/03/2014 13:45

Meant to say I have noticed how much less 'furry' my teeth are in the mornings! And the hygenist noticed when I had quit!

OP posts:
SoleSource · 30/03/2014 13:45

I'm looking forward to trying another flavour. I shall visit the caper shop this week.

magimedi · 30/03/2014 13:47

Having googled your question (not being arsey) it seems it doesn't!

magimedi · 30/03/2014 13:48

Maybe it's something in your flavour?

Love the thought of the 'caper' shop!! Grin

Could also be that you are coughing up a lot of tar & muck now you aren't smoking. That is very common for the first few weeks!

OP posts:
SoleSource · 30/03/2014 13:55

Yes, I Google and some site stated yes, some no.

Not coughing at all, of which I find odd. But maybe it is early days as I read on Google that lung clearance can take up to two weeks to get started.

I'm sure this topic has been covered on these threads but I found this page to be an interesting/slightly worrying read..

Second attempt after EU failing first time. If article is up to date..

FlockOfTwats · 30/03/2014 14:07

Gorja OH Loves red astaire. I thought cherry tunes at first but its actually identical to my kids cough syrup too.

Plenty What happened?!

I am currently browsing myepack resisting tepmtation for now

MaggieMcGill · 30/03/2014 14:07

Schro I'm Envy of your night out. I miss Glasgow. DP had a flat there when we first met. Stupidly he moved in with me but we do still manage to get through occasionally. The nightlife here sucks.

I actually miss all the banter you get when out having a fag. You end up striking up conversations with all sorts of folk but I've definitely noticed that my hangovers are not as bad which is a bonus.

FlockOfTwats · 30/03/2014 14:08

Regarding coughing up crap a few things can cause it. It's a common side effect of stopping smoking, and its also caused by taking in my air so if you've become more active since switching this will contribute - I get it terribly after exercise.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 30/03/2014 14:15

I fell over, Flock Blush I have a nasty graze on the heel of my hand but I think the MVP actually saved it from worse damage. I kind of like the look of it all scuffed up but now need a new pristine shiny thing for posh.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 30/03/2014 14:18

Sole, things have moved on a bit with the EU. I haven't posted this for a while so I hope it's not too spammy ...

Where we're at now: The EU has now voted in favour of adopting the Tobacco Products Directive, including Article 18a (now renamed Article 20) which concerns ecigs. You can read the full text of Article 20 here. This legislation is likely to come into force in May of this year and member states will have up to 30 months to comply (but they don't have to wait that long!)

  • No device on the market today could comply with this legislation except cig-alikes with disposable cartridges - the sort produced by big tobacco and big pharma.
  • No e-liquid over 20mg/ml will be legal (18mg/ml in practice to allow for a margin of error) - an estimated one quarter of vapers use liquid above this strength and are likely to return to smoking if they cannot get it.
  • The requirement for all new devices to be approved six months before coming to market will kill innovation in the EU. Currently it is usual to see new versions of products released every few weeks.
  • The notification regime will be too expensive for small companies to comply with. 98% of the market is made up of SMEs. Meanwhile, big tobacco and pharma will have no problem absorbing the costs.
  • Restrictions on sponsorship will mean it becomes very difficult for forums, youtube channels and other sources of information to survive.

What we can do: A European Citizen's Initiative has been launched by European Free Vaping Initiative. 'The European citizens' initiative allows one million EU citizens to participate directly in the development of EU policies, by calling on the European Commission to make a legislative proposal.'

This is not just another petition. Numerous hurdles have already been cleared to set it up and secure the necessary representatives in countries across the EU. The initiative now needs 1 million 'statements of support' (basically signatures) by 25th November and for at least 7 member states to meet their 'quota' - a set number of signatures based on population.

If the required number of signatures is reached, it means that vapers themselves will have the opportunity to present their case to the EU and propose sensible legislation for ecigs to replace article 20 of the TPD.

Who should sign:

  • vapers
  • smokers, because you might want to try switching one day
  • friends and family of vapers
  • friends and family of smokers
  • people who don't like being around smokers or who worry about SHS
  • people who care about harm reduction and saving lives

How to sign:

  • Go here - www.efvi.eu/
  • Scroll down to the big green rectangle and click it
  • Fill in your info on the EU site

You will be asked to provide your full name, address and DOB. This is because this is not just another petition, it's an official EU process - they need to check you are a genuine EU citizen.

Please also ask your families, friends, colleagues etc. to sign and share on FB, Twitter or whatever else you do online.

Dwerf · 30/03/2014 14:24

I've developed a really crappy cough in the last couple of days, which is completely down to the sharing of germs with small people, at least vaping doesn't make it worse like actual smoking would.

Sole my daughter recently pointed me in the direction of Eucyl (?) tooth powder that she discovered in the pound shop for whitening teeth. She was raving about it. At a quid, it's worth a go. It certainly makes them feel clean.

Allergictoironing · 30/03/2014 14:26

Plenty we have a number of newcomers to the thread since you last posted this, so I think it's definitely due & not spammy at all Smile.

SoleSource · 30/03/2014 14:31

Signed Plenty I got a signature number.

I shall see if others will sign too.

Thank you Plenty

Worth re-posting a lot more.

SoleSource · 30/03/2014 14:32
