This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Well I read the thread about cleaning it, didnt use it for an hour and its working again. I feel like a born again evangelist- I can't believe I spent so much money on cigarettes, it's appalling. I was spending £270 a month or thereabouts. I'm ashamed, but so glad I found you all, I couldn't have done it without all the friendly advice.

SoleSource · 29/03/2014 17:29

The money that you all used to spend on cigarettes,, what do you now do with it? Spend it, save it? Have you noticed that you're better off financially?

SoleSource · 29/03/2014 17:30

I get the crackling sound too, love it.

magimedi · 29/03/2014 17:38

I think the crackling is a bit of loose liquid on the wick. I quite like it too - but I don't crackle nearly as much as I used to!

The money that you all used to spend on cigarettes,

I have to say that I haven't saved as much as some of you as I used to go to France & pop up to Belgium (only 20 miles) twice a year & buy my Golden Virginia there, which worked out at about £4.15 for 50 g. I reckon therfore I only save about £3/4 a week & a lot of that has been taken up with buying new batteries etc until a few months ago. I tend to treat myself to a book for my kindle more often.

Must admit, had I been smoking B&H at £9 per pacekt I would be putting the saved cash away for a month or two, just to be able to treat myself.

Well done on no cigs, Sole

I've not been saving my money but I am a lot better off now. I smoked about 20 L&b a day and I was always skint the week before pay day and be dipping into the house account. 6 months on I always have money in my bank and can treat myself without checking to see if I can afford it. I'm well chuffed Grin Couldn't have done it without all you Thanks

magimedi · 29/03/2014 18:08

maggie You are not well 'chuffed' you are well 'puffed'! Grin

Shonajoy · 29/03/2014 18:14

Well I'm making a point of buying myself something every week for the first month. So far I've bought a pair of Fly London sandals, and make up, and clothes and gone way over budget. So I'm not going to do that again!

Ledare · 29/03/2014 18:25

I am saving almost £100 per week even allowing shinyitis Blush

Saving it all to redecorate the house, well, to get someone to do it, and also for the DC.

And for that money I bought myself a lung and throat cancer scare Hmm

I had tried cigalikes but they were both inadequate and expensive. I chain-smoked for twenty five years and can't believe how easy and enjoyable it is.

Allergictoironing · 29/03/2014 18:31

Sadly in my case the final push to get me off cigs and onto e-cigs was being out of work, so for me it's just not increasing my overdraft as quickly as I was Sad.

Not sure about when I get back working, as income in my field can vary wildly. From £25k to £55k permanent depending on level & industry sector, and as contract anything from £100 a day to £400 a day - so you can see any "profit" may go towards minor comfort stuff right up to not being noticeable!

Can't really tell about the nicotine amount, Precious as with vaping the nicotine is absorbed through your mouth & the lung hit is an added extra, as it were!

I was on 20 roll ups a day & started on 18mg & have dropped to 12mg. (I did have a short while on 6mg).

I deffo use my vaper more than I smoked, because I can vape in places I would not have smoked - like inside & whilst posting.

I'd suggest dropping a level of nicotine - think that would be 24mg & see how you get on.

And welcome to the thread - if you don't understand do ask - no question is regarded as too silly. It's a bloody minefield when you start vaping & we (well not so much me, but some of the more knowledgeable peeps here) are always happy to answer ANY question anyone has.

This thread is only in AIBU as we don't want it to disappear!

We are all VVVVVV reasonable & nice here!

OP posts:
Allergictoironing · 29/03/2014 20:29

That does seem like quite a lot - the usual estimate is if you smoked 20 a day medium strength cigs then you should start on 18mg liquid with an average 20 ml liquid used in a week as a very rough guide.

I'm slightly surprised that Totally Wicked sell 30mg liquids, as most places only go up to 24mg for "ready to vape" liquids. Have you tried reducing the nicotine strength of the liquids at all?

Allergictoironing · 29/03/2014 20:30

Ah X-post with the lovely Magi, sorry

ilovesooty · 29/03/2014 20:55

I think I succumbed to rather a lot of shinyitis and shopping accidents, but I do have about 5 vv batteries, a MVP 2, a Vamo 5 on the way, a lot of clearos and enough liquid to last a good while.

I spent all my Avios and topped up the required amount (£90) to finance flights and 4 nights in a 4 star hotel in Amsterdam next Christmas. Grin

Perihelion · 29/03/2014 21:42

Cheaper, but not massively as I stopped smoking fags a few years ago and moved onto roll ups.
Money is a bit tight, so it helps, but the main motivation for me has been that I seem surrounded by friends and family with cancer. I can sort of accept it with older relatives, but not friends who are the same age as me ( 40's ). Also a relative died in Jan from a massive stoke, having previously had a couple of minor ones. the doctors were always asking if he was/had been a smoker......
So savings....my lung function and my life?

Don't forget you can mix say 12mg & 30mg half & half, to get a bit over 20mg strength?

If you're vaping about 10ml a week, then you're not actually getting through as much as the typical average usage of around 20ml a week. So all in all you're probably taking in less nicotine than I am, just smaller amounts of stronger liquid. It may FEEL like you're vaping more than you were smoking, but it's just spread out a bit more over the day taking 3-4 vaping drags at a time rather than smoking a whole cigarette over 5-10 minutes.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 30/03/2014 10:03

MyPrecious - Brilliant thread - read it all
Don't understand vast majority but read it none the less!

Grin Welcome to the thread! Is it a bit like the shipping forecast - you've no idea what it's about but the words are kind of soothing? Congatulations on stopping smoking Flowers

I think the right nicotine level is -

  • not so high you feel sick or headachy
  • not so low you're craving fags

If 30mg is working for you, there's no reason to change it unless you want to cut it down. Nicotine itself is pretty harmless at vaping concentrations - it's very similar to caffeine in terms of risks. Around 1 in 4 vapers uses higher than 20mg and, from reading the vaping forums, there seem to be quite a few using, 30, 36 or higher. That Dave Dorn off VTTV uses 54mg as a way of not having it stuck to his mouth the whole time.

I use 18mg but get through about twice the amount of liquid you do. I have thought of trying 24mg to see if I can put it down a bit more.

magimedi · 30/03/2014 10:40

I also use 20ml per week - at 12mg strength & puff away probably more than a cigarette.

You'll get up to speed with a lot of the terminology soon.
