This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Take deep breaths, Allergic.

Good luck tomorrow.

SoleSource · 27/03/2014 17:05

I actually had written lanyard on here but autocorrect deleted it.

SoleSource · 27/03/2014 17:06

Ugh a real cigarette tastes vile now.

Allergictoironing · 27/03/2014 17:09

Didn't wow the last ones did I? Sad. Then again, suddenly coming up with VBA & advanced Excel formulae in the interview when they weren't a requirement on the job spec (and I can't do them) threw me a bit in that one.

It can all be down to whoever the interviewers "click" with the best these days, there are so many candidates out there for every job. And whether they are too fussed about whether I fit their vision of a skinny elegant consultant type Angry.

KatieScarlett2833 · 27/03/2014 17:26

Yes, that's it.
Interviewers are just people with their own prejudices and opinions.
I work for an organisation that is very responsible for getting people into work. (Please don't judge Wink).
The only thing you can do is be as prepared as you can be. On time, dressed well (helps when imagining you in the role) smiling and confident.
If they pass you over, it's not due to any deficiency on your part. It's just that the person they hired better meets their perception of who they see in the role, IYSWIM?
And small is fabulous (I am 5'1").

Allergictoironing · 27/03/2014 17:57

Now prepared is something I DO know about! Had briefing call with agency. CV printed out (new clean copy). Map from station to the office printed out with walking route marked, and train times noted on the bottom. I hour contingency planned into the commute, & nearest coffee shop discovered. No job spec printed only because there bloody isn't one (mutter mutter). Organisation researched on line, including the initiative the programme serves. Both trouser & skirt suit laid out to be decided in the morning, with appropriate blouses & shoes for each. Mac and woollen coats hanging up downstairs, to be decided weather dependant. Hair straighteners out & tested. Not bad considering I only got the invitation just before lunchtime Grin

Sorry about the wibbling at you guys, but my sister isn't available this evening to talk to and she's my normal "go to" person for pre interview nerves!

However I now no longer want a cigarette!

Allergictoironing · 27/03/2014 17:58

Oops also email with invitation to interview printed out with interviewers names, agent's name & phone number, company address & time etc!

KatieScarlett2833 · 27/03/2014 18:03

You are good to go.
Give em hell Grin
Will be thinking of you tomorrow.

Allergictoironing · 27/03/2014 18:08

2:30pm, so leaving home noon-ish. E-cig carry case will be sorted in the morning, to reduce the chances of any leakage from the full spare clearos (with caps on), and after ensuring the spare battery is fully topped up Grin.

Buckteethjeff · 27/03/2014 18:38

Hi all! Can I jump in?

Had my flights vapour cig since Xmas and I love it, but it's makng my chest a bit tight. I've been on cherry menthol for a while as it was buy one get one free.

I've had mouth ulcers every other week and now my chest is getting tight immediately after have a few drags on it. Sad

Any ideas? Don't want to go back on the fags.

Catching up on posts from the last few days.

Derek I would totally pretend I was in a meth lab if I could mix my own liquids; in fact as a Breaking Bad Obsessive it has made me really want to do it Grin

I've had minor mouth ulcers and bleeding gums since stopping smoking tobacco over eight weeks ago but a visit to the hygienist sorted it.

Allergictoironing · 27/03/2014 20:10

ESD you are a heroine! If there's any chance of this going on more than a couple more days, it might be worth buying a couple of flavours on line, as mostly they get them to you in 2 days; if you order at night they tend to dispatch first thing the next day? You'll have saved more than a couple of bottles of liquid by now in non-smoked fags anyway Smile.

Welcome Buck, that a Liberty Flights starter kit you have? There could be a number of reasons why you're feeling the tightness in your chest - it could be from the type of base fluid used in the liquid you are vaping (they come in a range of blends from 100% VG to 100% PG), it could be that the nicotine content is a bit too high for you, it could be that it's just your body adjusting to not having all that crap being inhaled every day. Or it could be that you have something like the symptoms of cold, hayfever or asthma that you wouldn't have noticed before because it was masked by the effects of your smoking.

Bloody hell I cannot believe you have stuck it with the Amaretto! I'll post first class tomorrow so hopefully you wont have to wait out the entire weekend!

Buckteethjeff · 27/03/2014 21:29

Hi allergic , what VG /PG? (Sorry)

I'm on the lowest I think already 12mg. Its actually been since I went n cherry menthol.

Allergictoironing · 27/03/2014 22:07

PG is Propylene Glycol, VG is Vegetable Glycol - these are the fluids used as the "base" carriers for the nicotine. PG tends to give more of what's called throat hit and VG gives more vapour. Most base liquids are a mixture of these, usually 70% PG/30% VG, or 80% PG/20% VG. Not everyone gets on with this blend, so some liquid manufacturers or blenders offer a choice of proportions.

In general, it is recommended that a 20 a day smoker should be looking at 18% nicotine liquid and vaping about 20ml a week to try at the start of vaping. However this is only a rough guide as I was on 30 a day & went straight to 18mg liquid & about 20ml a week. You can actually get 6% nicotine mix, or even 0% for people who have managed to wean themselves off the nicotine but still have the hand to mouth habit (or just enjoy it!).

And don't apologise for questions, we all start knowing nothing & the only way we find out is by asking the basic questions Smile.

Buckteethjeff · 27/03/2014 22:12

I only smoked around 5-8 a day unless I was drinking and could do 40

Would you recommend I went back in to the shop? Would they have the different mixes there?

I only really puff on it now when dd is napping do not a lot.

When I look back at standing in the back garden under a turned inside out umbrella shielding from the wind and rain, trying to spark a rag up Grin fucking hell! Ha ha

QueenStromba · 27/03/2014 22:17

VG is normal glycerine that you get in boots or the baking aisle, PG is propylene glycol. They're just carriers for the nicotine and most liquids have both in varying quantities. Some people are allergic to PG which would explain the tightness in the chest or you could be allergic to something in the flavouring. I've found this thread on another forum that lists suppliers of 100% VG liquids so it might be worth giving that a try.

Buckteethjeff · 27/03/2014 22:18

Thank you!

Buckteethjeff · 27/03/2014 22:19

Fag! Not rag!

Allergictoironing · 27/03/2014 22:20

Depends on whether it was a proper vaping shop, or somewhere that had a couple of ecigs & liquids as a sideline. If it was a proper vaping shop then yes definitely go back & discuss it with them, but if it was a sideline type of place they probably know very little about it.

You can also get a massive range of different mixes & flavours on line, if you go back through this thread (and the previous ones) then you'll find plenty of links to on line stores lots of us have used & can recommend.

You may want to slightly change your pattern of vaping btw. I've found that rather than vaping solidly for 5-10 mins like I would have smoked a cigarette, I tend to take 3-4 drags max at a time but more often. I reckon I'm probably taking about the same number of drags in a day, just sort of spread out more iyswim?

Mouth ulcers, bleeding gums, and coughing up crap seem to be the most common initial side effects of vaping, though they do go away after a few months by all accounts. This is because your body is adjusting to NOT having the crap put in, improved circulation, body getting rid of accumulated crap etc.

Buckteethjeff · 27/03/2014 22:23

I do tend to puff on it like a normal cig with a brew.

It's a liberty flight shop .

Yes with the coughing crap up. I just assumed it was old tar coming of my lungs.

QueenStromba · 27/03/2014 22:27

I'm well jealous that you've got a liberty flights shop near you! They do VG liquids.

Allergictoironing · 27/03/2014 22:28

Liberty Flights actual shop should either stock or at least be able to get hold of all the stuff they do on their web shop, which looks like a very extensive range. Have a look [[http://www.liberty-flights.co.uk/index.asp here] and you'll be able to see they do all the way from 100%PG to 100%VG liquids, and down to 8% nicotine Smile
