This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Derek I now have a load of bottles that I wont use as I've kind of decided the ones that I like now and didn't like these so you can have them if you want? They are fruity flavours. Just PM me your address if you do and I will post on Friday.

Most are high strength though but might be fine for you.

Allergictoironing · 25/03/2014 20:06

ESD not everyone goes 100% from smoking to vaping in a day anyway, took me nearly 3 months and the last month of that was trying to lose just TWO bloody cigs a day. Being ill and at the same time not having a decent flavour to hand on only the second day of trying to swap seems like a reasonable reason to defer progress until tomorrow.

It's fine, keep your Amaretto for emergencies! :o

You're welcome, Maggie did the same for me so I know what it's like to be stuck with something that tastes rank to you and you can't use it! (and I am now ordering more of one of the ones Maggie sent me as I think it tasted amazing)

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 25/03/2014 20:20

Allergic Btw, my pineapple is nearly done! What the hell!? I must have used it so much more this week because it tastes so good. Confused Am putting in an order on Joose Juice on Friday as I want the orange cream and to try their pineapple. I noticed though that it's nearly double the price to buy a 30ml bottle than it is to buy 3 10ml bottles of the same stuff! Confused.

ginmakesitallok · 25/03/2014 20:22

For folk who get twitchy when their e liquid stocks get low, have you considered mixing your own? I've been mixing for a couple of months, and probably have enough liquid to last 4 months or so. (And to think I only ever had enough cigarettes in the house for a couple of days at the most!)

ESD Their Strawberry is lush btw, we got that one too and it tastes a bit like mcdonalds milkshake.

Gin I would love to but I am a bit nervous of it as I have a small toddler and a baby here and 3 cats, I'm worried I would spill some pure nicotine or something.

Oh dear, I just actually lolled at that ESD, I think I would do the same...

ginmakesitallok · 25/03/2014 20:37

Its really easy to mix your own. The only thing to be careful with is the nicotine liquid, and as long as you keep it out of reach of the kids it's fine. It comes with a childproof top, and my DDS (4 and 10) know they're not allowed to touch the box I keep it all in). So much cheaper than buying liquid, and you can change the flavours to meet your own preferences.

stinkysox · 25/03/2014 20:39

Been following these threads for a while, got my ecig yesterday. (My 30th birthday-seemed like a good day to quit!)
Love my cig and grape flavour liquid and I'm 2 days cigarette free Grin

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 25/03/2014 20:39

Where do you buy the stuff from and it it a very expensive outlay? :)

Well done Stinky, really is a revelation, isn't it? :) And happy Birthday. :o

ginmakesitallok · 25/03/2014 20:44

I got a kit from alchemists cupboard to start with. You'll need, some syringes, some bottles, nicotine liquid, VG and pg and some flavour concentrates. The nicotine liquid is the most expensive thing. You can pick up VG in boots.

ginmakesitallok · 25/03/2014 20:45

Oh, and you can get ready mixed flavours online, makes it even easier!

stinkysox · 25/03/2014 20:47

Thank you Smile
It really is. The only problem I've found is they dehydrate me.

ilovesooty · 25/03/2014 20:49

Schro I'm pretty sure the JJ prices on 30ml bottles are BOGOF.

ESD nice to see you here. I'm sure once you recover your vaping will come on leaps and bounds.

And I blame whoever posted the pics of the Vamo kit on FT for my latest shopping accident. Having ordered it I found I also needed a load of posh clearos as backups for my new MVP2 that I got last week.

ginmakesitallok · 25/03/2014 20:49

Ilovesooty, I've had my mvp for a couple of months now, they are great aren't they?

ilovesooty · 25/03/2014 20:50

Well done stinky

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 25/03/2014 20:50

Gin I will have a look in to it when money is a bit better. :) And will have a look at alchemists cupboard.

Stinky I think it dehydrates most at first, just try and drink loads more than normal. I'm 3 weeks and 3 days down now, still feel a bit thirst when I am vaping more but much better than it was at first.

ilovesooty · 25/03/2014 20:51

gin I've wanted one for ages. I absolutely love it.
