This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

My new favourite is butterscotch. Strawberry mint is quite nice, as is coconut, especially when mixed with chocolate.

Allergictoironing · 24/03/2014 19:44

A lot of people here love cocomel (coconut/caramel flavour). Not the cheapest brand, but worth it if you love it. I'm not a fan of coconut though, and love the Hangsen brand Pineapple most closely followed by Banana milkshake flavour.

Always worth going into a bricks and mortar shop if you have a decent one near you. Things may cost a little more than on the internet, but the advice & help you can get is invaluable. Just with I had one closer!

Jux · 24/03/2014 22:21

Gingerbread from Joose Juice is popular. You can specify the blend of PG/VG from Joose Juice too.

magimedi · 24/03/2014 22:29

Agree with Allergic - you may pay 5% more, but the help you will get will save you far more than that!

Mirage look OK but this one also looks good:

www.vapevendor.co.uk/

As does this place:

myciggy.com/

There are quite a few more if you put the name of your town + vape stores or ecig shops into google!

FWIW, I tend to charge my bigger batteries overnight to no ill effect. You can buy a charging bag which will retard a fire if necessary; I haven't got one though (may live to regret it).

Cantabile · 25/03/2014 09:57

I think I want myciggy.com/electronic-cigarettes/e-tech-vari-volt-multi-functional-battery-torch-power-pack.html. I do not want to have another shopping accident Grin

QueenStromba · 25/03/2014 10:44

That's really expensive for what it is Cantabile - you can get an MVP2 or a a shiny MVP2 for less money and they have a bigger battery and do variable wattage as well as voltage (although admittedly it doesn't have a torch). If it's the look of it you like rather than the fact you can charge your phone off it then for about the same money you can get the Vamo V5 (or about half the price from Fast Tech which also has variable wattage or voltage and has changeable batteries.

Mentalpsychiatrist · 25/03/2014 14:37

Hello Vapers! Despite being a committed Marlboro girl I think I'd like to try gaping properly but have had a set back. I bought a cig-alike from the stall in the shopping centre and it's horrid. It tastes like burning plastic and gives me a wretched headache so I'm back on the Marlboro again. If I switch to something like an EVOD do they taste better and produce more vapour than the cig-alike. Also, anyone else experienced headaches?

Mentalpsychiatrist · 25/03/2014 14:38

Oh FFS, 'vaping' not 'gaping', stupid iPad.

Allergictoironing · 25/03/2014 14:52

Hey Mental. Yes yes YES it will be 1000 times better than a cigalike from a shopping centre stall!

For starters, you will have a choice of hundreds of wonderful flavours to choose from. It's an awful lot cheaper in the long run than cigalikes. You can choose the blend of base liquid to produce a preferred balance of throat hit vs vapour production. Because they have to last a lot longer, the atomisers in a proper tank/clearo will be better quality than those in a disposable cartridge. I could go on, but you get the message?

When I tried cigalikes (good brand) I managed to get from 30 a day down to about 16. Within a week of changing to a decent battery & clearo system I was down to 2 a day, and have been completely cigarette free for 6 weeks now (as from last night Grin).

Shonajoy · 25/03/2014 14:57

Hi guys am on day three of vaping but getting fed up with my strawberry flavour. The bottles are too wee to decant any in, so do I just finish this then clean the tank (what with) and refill? That's why I'm looking forward to getting my new one delivered, so I can have two flavours and also in case one breaks!

This is SO exciting, I've smoked 20 a day for years and this is really really working for me. I've already saved £27 in three days. Oh and my original one came with a cap for the pipe bit, can you buy spares of these?

Thanks in advance again! Xx

Allergictoironing · 25/03/2014 15:05

Hi Shona. I tend to have at least 3-4 clearos on the go at any one time with different flavours, & swap them around (currently tobacco, pineapple, banana milkshake and apple) - I find that after a while vaping the same flavour it gets a bit "meh" so if I swap them about it seems to sort of freshen my palate iyswim?

If you buy decent quality clearos, they usually come with a soft plastic cap on. I know I've seen them for sale at one of the on line shops but can't for the life of me remember which one Sad; I want a few more too as I lose mine & like to use them when I'm out & about.

Google some YouTube vids of cleaning & dry burning whatever clearo it is you have at the mo, most likely a CE4 as they are the standard cheap ones sold with kits. But generally the idea is to wash the clearo out first with water then with rinse with something like vodka(!) to get as much of the old liquid out of the wick, then "dry burn" by attaching it to the battery (still empty) & holding the button down for short spurts to dry it out & vaporise any remaining liquid. I always end up overdoing the dry burning though, which is why I keep all my favorites in their own clearos Grin

Shonajoy · 25/03/2014 15:18

Ah great thankyou .mine doesn't seem to have a name it was from ecig wizard and I think I put a pic up above. I always have vodka in the house so that won't be an issue haha!xx

Allergictoironing · 25/03/2014 15:40

Yep looking at their web site that looks like a CE4 type clearo, so that's what you need to look up a vid for. I also found this set of instructions....

Cleaning a CE4 Cartomizer

  1. Remove the cartomizer from the battery.
  2. Unscrew the mouthpiece and fill the cartomizer about half way with water.
  3. Screw the mouthpiece back on and shake for about ten seconds, then unscrew the mouthpiece and empty the water out of the cartomizer tank.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 about five times.
  5. Unscrew the mouthpiece and fill the cartomizer to the top (or fill your mouth with water) and blow water through the center tube. This will rinse off the wick where it goes through the atomizer coils.
  6. Repeat step 5 about five times, then replace the mouthpiece and blow through the cartomizer a few times using a tissue to catch the water blown out of the cartomizer. This will get most of the water off the wick where it goes through the atomizer coils.
  7. Screw the cartomizer back on to the battery, press the button, and draw about ten long puffs (you probably won't get any vapor).
  8. Remove the cartomizer from the battery.
  9. Blow through the cartomizer a few times to dry-off the atomizer wick where it goes through the atomizer coils.
10. Fill with your favorite e-liquid. 11. While the cartomizer is off the battery, use a tissue to clean out the battery contacts. This will clean out any e-liquid or dirt that has accumulated around the battery contacts. 12. Screw the refilled cartomizer onto the battery and you're back to thick and fluffy vapor in about 10 draws.

I gather the vodka should be used for the last final rinse, though not mandatory and possibly a waste of good vodka

Shonajoy · 25/03/2014 17:57

Allergic I love you. Thankyou so much again, you're a lifesaver. Will do that when my new ones arrive x

Shonajoy · 25/03/2014 18:53

I've just added some ice cream flavour to my strawberry, yum.

EatShit, hi thee to the shop/site and get yourself some menthol liquid. I gather it's great when you have a cold. I haven't tried it myself as I haven't had a cold since I started vaping (whoopdedoo!!) but I did get myself a small bottle for when I do.

Shona, I do clean my clearos fairly regularly, but it does depend upon what flavours I'm using. If I'm trying a new flavour then I'll use a new/barely used but thoroughly cleaned clearo, but if it's a flavour I'm familiar with then I don't tend to worry. I know that apple will mix nicely with cinnamon or caramel so I don't necessarily clean when swapping between those flavours.

If you get a burnt taste, or not much vapour, that can indicate that your clearo needs cleaning.

Sorry ESD! That't the difficulty with trying to read a thread when one's child is trying to get out of doing their homework whilst also trying to persuade you to buy them a t shirt with a cute cat on it.
