This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

I'm getting wiser.

Just planning my requirements for May so putting in fastech orders now...

I only stalk the very best Derek Wink

You should see the amount of loo roll I keep (just me & DH here), Allergic!! Grin

I also get jumpy if I have less than at least a 30ml bottle full of each of my 2 most used e-liquids - JUST in case for some reason either Hangsen suddenly stops importing to the UK, or my mates decide to quit the business without telling me Grin

Oh and a not at all stealth boast.

I've lost (drumroll) 26lb in 7 weeks. The only thing I've changed is vaping my gingerbread/cocomel combo instead of smoking 30 a day.

Not sure if it's the sweet taste killing my need for cake, the extra energy I have dashing to the mailbox praying for fast tech delivery or the nicotine rush but who cares, I'm skinny GrinGrinGrin

magimedi · 24/03/2014 17:24

Am not quite so bad - have to have at least 20ml of my Sherlock around to feel at ease.

Although now I have two shops within 3 miles of me (had I told you that? Grin ) I don't feel quite so anxious!!

Derek Every other time I quite cold turkey I was exactly like you. I now find the smell of real cigs pretty nasty, which I never did before.

eGo is a brand which sort of became the standard type, so you'll have "genuine" eGo batteries and accessories then a load of other brands which are called eGo (or Ego) compatible/type/style. The fittings/thread type for these is also known as 510.

The clearo, short for clearomiser aka tank, is the bit you put the liquid (aka juice) in. It consists of the actual container part and the atomiser that heats the liquid up to vapour, also sometimes referred to as the vapouriser.

Don't worry about not having got the pink battery this time. Firstly you'll need a spare battery (or more) to use when the first one is charging. Secondly with the amount of money you'll save by vaping instead of smoking you'll have paid for a new one within a couple of days Grin

Allergictoironing · 24/03/2014 17:52

Oh and if you want VERY blingy batteries, have a look HERE!

Depends on what they are EatS. There's a massive range available of different types & styles, and originals & copies within those. Though at £4 for 5 I'd guess they are crap copies of low level clearos tbh. Link?

OK those are CE4 clearos, probably the same as the one that came with your kit. They are very much the basic starter clearo and no part is replaceable or rebuildable, and also seem to be the most commonly cloned. Your clearo will only last a few weeks or maybe months before the coil starts to burn out (nasty burnt taste when it starts to go Sad then dies completely) so having a type where you can replace the coil or whole atomiser part tends to be worth doing. Everyone has their favourite type of tank, so have a browse round some of the online shops like this place & see what takes your fancy.

That dx site will filter in a way, but it says things like "Nicotine" and then the choice is "with" and "without". Then it said "No data" Hmm. They'll need to do better than that, I think.

Allergictoironing · 24/03/2014 18:28

Just the clearo - the batteries tend to last an awful lot longer (months to over a year). As said above, you'll need at least a second battery but the nice shiny ones tend not to be bundled with kits same with the better clearos, so you're better off getting separates anyway.

Allergictoironing · 24/03/2014 18:30

Jux I was trying for example to look for 1300mAh batteries. You can find them if you scroll through all 25 pages, but the batteries filters don't have 1300mAh as an option. Why they couldn't just have "batteries" as a filter option I don't know, but they don't even have a standard search field!

This is probably the best deal you'll get on the rainbow one outside of the ultra cheap importers like FastTech (commonly known on here as Slow Tech as it can take up to 4 weeks just for the postage, assuming your item isn't out of stock when you order). Not the cheapest, but a very long lasting battery, up to a couple of days between charges, and has variable voltage so you can adjust the power output depending on the coil in your clearo, the liquid you are using, and your personal taste.

You can justify having a second battery though, as you need that for when you are charging the other one Wink. But to be serious for a mo, you will pay for a new blingy battery & a couple of clearos within a week Smile. Just bookmark Myepack so you know where to go when you've saved enough.
