This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Good plan.

R.e Flavour Art, I know Sad

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 12/03/2014 18:54

I really don't understand why TVECA are taking this stance or why FlavourArt are endorsing them. Most of their customers must be DIY mixers ConfusedSad

Still ... it's No Smoking Day today and there's a special forum. I might cheer myself up in a bit by creating an account and sharing my success story Smile

That's brilliant about the nic levels Ledare, well done Flowers

Ledare · 12/03/2014 19:35

Thanks Plenty - it wasn't intentional, but handy given the new legislation Sad
Congrats on your success story as well Smile

littlemisssarcastic · 12/03/2014 22:06

With the hoohaa surrounding ecigs and the law, how will this affect people who are smoking ecigs, apart from not being able to buy 24mg strength eliquid?
Will ecigs attract a large amount of tax? Will they be difficult to buy?
Is it a good idea to stock up on batteries and eliquid? How long does sealed eliquid 'keep' for?

QueenStromba · 12/03/2014 22:59

We're not exactly sure how it's going to work in practice but worst case scenario is that everything but some cigalike brands will be banned. You also won't be able to buy e liquid in bigger than 10ml bottles which sucks if you want to mix your own liquid.

QueenStromba · 13/03/2014 10:58

I've heard back from Fast Tech about the iclear 134 mini:

Thank you for your suggestion. We have added this to our to-do list and we will update you when it's here.

[We typically give priority to small electronics so please allow some time for us to work on larger items like this.]

Allergictoironing · 13/03/2014 11:08

Nice going Queen; and thanks for the links yesterday Smile.

Realised last night it's been a month smoke free for me; longest I've ever managed in the past was 4 days & that's because I was in hospital immobilised with a smashed up leg when I was 20!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 13/03/2014 11:35

Well done allergic that's brilliant Flowers

I have a question for the mod users - how much do the batteries cost and how many mah are they?

QueenStromba · 13/03/2014 11:58

These are the batteries for the itaste 134 - 2800mah is the highest I could see on fast tech.

FlockOfTwats · 13/03/2014 16:23

Plenty

OH uses the ones queen linked to for his itaste 134. The little fat 18350s like this won't fit in the itaste 134 (Not the full sized one anyway, i think they do in the mini though as its telescopic).

I use those little grey ones in my vamo v5. they usually say how many mah they are. But having two stacked like the the 134 mini or the vamo doesn't equal the mah x 2 - Two 900mah batteries still equal 900mah, they can just put more power out.

The innokin mvp2 is a good mod. I have bought one today. Its battery is built in which makes it easy and its 2600 mah, vv, vw and is a portable power source for charging your phone!

FlockOfTwats · 13/03/2014 16:24

OH says he thinks you can get bigger than 2600mah for the itaste 134 for he isn't 100% on that.

TBF though 2600mah is more than anyone needs really.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 13/03/2014 16:47

Thanks both!

I already have an MVP2, I'm looking to get the metal tube + separate batteries sort of mod because I think it will be pretty much unbannable Wink

QueenStromba · 13/03/2014 16:55

Plenty already has an MVP2 :)

Fast Tech did have other batteries that had higher mah in quote marks. Basically FT retest the batteries to check if they are the mah on the label and some of them come up quite short - there was a "3000mah" which is actually 1000mah.

I'll be getting the 134 mini when FT get it in (depending on price). The thing that really appeals to me is that the batteries aren't inbuilt so you can take spares out with you and can just get new batteries when they start losing charge. Having a couple of MVP 2s has taught me that VW is well worth the extra money (I'm using a nearly dead coil now dialled up to 11 :)) and that innokin mods are built like 90s nokias so I'm willing to shell out some extra money on a mod that will last longer than the batteries.

FlockOfTwats · 13/03/2014 17:05

Ahhh :)

If either of you are in the northwest the shop near me will have the itaste mini in a week or so, OH says itll be about £90/£100 including battery (Decent battery too according to OH), charger and the new iclear tank (iClear x). He does a six month guarentee aswell. No idea how that would compare to other places, we mostly like the guarentee.

OH loves his 134 it is a really decent bit of kit though and apparently the mini matches it on everything, I will be getting a mini at some point mainly due to the legislation like you said plenty.

QueenStromba · 13/03/2014 17:30

That's not bad - myepack does it for £80 not including the battery and charger.

QueenStromba · 13/03/2014 17:37

The itaste 134 is £64 on FT (not including battery and charger of course) so I'd expect the mini to be about £55.

magimedi · 13/03/2014 17:46

I luffs you all but you are losing me in the higher realms of vaping. I don't really understand about MPV & innokin & mha.

I currently use these with a couple of slightly larger (1100, I think) batteries & am happy with them.

But I can see that I am going to have to get up to speed if they are going to be outlawed.

If one of you has the time and/or inclination would you consider writing an idiots guide to the higher end of vaping?

Allergictoironing · 13/03/2014 17:57

Seconding Magi here, I too am using pretty standard kit ego or ego style battery and GS-H2 clearos. About the most advanced bit of my kit is that the Vision Spinner is vv. Thanks

QueenStromba · 13/03/2014 18:11

It's nothing too complicated - the higher end batteries are called mods. An MVP 2 looks like this, other than the shape the only real difference is that it has a huge battery in terms of mah and does variable voltage and wattage. You can also get mods that are pretty similar to a torch (i.e. you have to put batteries in it) but with similar functionality to the MVP 2.

Ledare · 13/03/2014 18:14

I've just ordered one because it is shiny and purple I like the idea of the puffs counter.

Why do you need to buy batteries for them? Are they rebuild-able?

QueenStromba · 13/03/2014 18:15

The most popular torch-like mods are the vamo v5 and the innokin iclear 134 that Flock posted pictures of up thread.

mah is just how much charge the battery holds - the higher the mah the longer the battery will last.

Innokin is just a company that produces a load of good clearos, tanks and batteries.

QueenStromba · 13/03/2014 18:19

Did you order a MVP2 Ledare? If so you don't need batteries for it. The torch style mods are good simply because you can replace the battery when they stop holding their charge or just have the one device and carry a spare battery with you for if it dies when you're out and about.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 13/03/2014 18:21

I'm quite tempted by the Vamo V5. It has a kind of no-nonsense look about it. It's less than £20 too!

Ledare, you don't need to buy batteries for the MVP.

QueenStromba · 13/03/2014 18:26

I'd forgotten the vamo was so cheap - must repress my shinyitis. If you go for the 18350 batteries then they'd be compatible with the itaste 134 mini or the 18650 are compatible with the original 134 if you think you'll end up getting one of those.

Ledare · 13/03/2014 18:29

Ah, no. It was just an MVP. Thanks.
